News Dump Tuesday: Colonialism Edition

We are still a colonial empire

Last week the Supreme Court insulted Puerto Rico by saying its people aren’t sovereign. This week the court added injury to the insult, denying Puerto Rico access to federal bankruptcy laws that would have created a path to recovery for its struggling utilities.
The decision on Monday passed the ball to Congress to change the law or arrange a bailout. At the same time, it underscored the outrageousness of Puerto Rico’s distinct legal status as a quasi-colony: the Commonwealth will have to lobby a Congress in which its residents, U.S. citizens all, have no representation.

Puerto Rico about to be hit again

So far, nearly "all of the names of the victims seem to be Puerto Rican," Karina Claudio Betancourt, a Puerto Rican activist who is a program officer with the Open Society Foundations, said as the names rolled out.
The shooting hit the close-knit LGBT community of Ponce, Puerto Rico's second largest city on its southern coast, particularly hard. Many knew the five victims and said some had moved to Orlando to find jobs and flee a dire economic crisis that has sparked the largest exodus of Puerto Ricans to the U.S. mainland in decades.

It wasn't homophobia after all

The relatively straightforward narrative of the Sunday morning Orlando attack, a single, ISIS-inspired gunman acting on the basis of the group’s anti-gay policies, seems to be falling apart with the latest reports dramatically confusing the matter, and painting gunman Omar Mateen is a much different light.
After yesterday’s shock at the ordeal began to clear, patrons at the attacked nightclub, Pulse, discovered something incredible, and totally absent from the initial reports. Mateen wasn’t some unfamiliar attacker, but rather a “regular” at the bar, who had been coming in for at least three years.
A repeat visitor who used to drink to excess at Pulse, saying he couldn’t at home because his family was “really strict,” Mateen was also on a gay dating app used by other patrons of the club, and one man reported Mateen had exchanged messages with him and a friend.
A former classmate of Mateen’s at the police academy said that he believed Mateen to be gay “but not open about it,” and that Mateen had asked him out “romantically.”

And he wasn't really radicalized

However, Mateen's comments about Islam suggested that while his viewpoints were no doubt extreme, they were also confused, perhaps even incoherent.
...To be clear, these groups named by Mateen are not allies. The Islamic State and al-Qaeda both derive their theology from an extreme view of Sunni Islamism, but in practical terms the pair split in 2014, with the more established al-Qaeda publicly disavowing the actions of the more extreme Islamic State. Jabhat al-Nusra, al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria, often fights the Islamic State in the Syrian conflict. Meanwhile, Hezbollah is a Shiite Islamist group. In Syria, it supports the government of Bashar al-Assad, effectively meaning it fights both the Islamic State and al-Qaeda.

central banks backstopping the markets

The European Central Bank would publicly pledge to backstop financial markets in tandem with the Bank of England should Britain vote to leave the European Union, officials with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

decline of center-left in Spain

If the polls are right, Mr Sánchez is on course to lead his party to yet another painful defeat on June 26.
This time, however, Spain’s Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) looks likely to be beaten not just by the centre-right Popular party but also by the far-left Unidos Podemos movement. According to recent surveys, the once mighty PSOE will come a distant third in this month’s general election, with just 20 per cent of the vote. Not only will it not lead the next government. Barring an unlikely late surge, it will not even lead the Spanish left.
The decline of the PSOE is, of course, part of a broader story. In Germany, the Social Democrats are polling around historic lows, as are the French Socialists under their unpopular president. Pasok has turned into a splinter group in the Greek parliament. In the UK, meanwhile, the venerable Labour party has undergone something of a reverse takeover, and is currently led by a politician who spent his entire career on the party’s leftist fringe. With few exceptions — Italy being the most obvious — the European centre-left finds itself in the midst of a long and painful retreat.

Brexit is going to happen

The campaign for Britain to leave the European Union led in a fifth opinion poll published over the past 24 hours, showing Prime Minister David Cameron is foundering in his efforts to persuade voters to reject a so-called Brexit.
The online survey of 2,497 adults carried out by TNS June 7-13 found 47 percent backing “Leave” and 40 percent for “Remain.” It comes after four phone and online surveys released Monday by ICM, YouGov Plc and ORB showed leads of between 1 point and 7 points.

Yes, it was classified

However, even Clinton’s statement that nothing was marked classified has now been proven a lie.
One of her just-released emails carries a clear classification marking known as a portion marking. That marking was on the email when it was sent directly to Clinton’s account.” Nothing done retroactively, though retroactive classification is a standard tool used throughout the government and validly changes a document.
Portion marking is used when a document contains paragraphs of various levels of classification. Paragraph one may be marked as (U) for unclassified, paragraph two as (S) for secret and so forth.
The Clinton email in question has a paragraph marked (C), which means it is classified at the confidential level. The text refers to a phone call with Malawi’s first female president.

In the last five minutes I discovered that I share a birthday with Donald Trump.
I am really not happy about this and am now going away to process this new information.

Those are cool people to share a birthday with. Firefly was one of my favorite TV series ever and I am pretty sure that at least one person here agrees with that Smile

shared with complete strangers mean so much.

Just because Trump isn't a total stranger doesn't mean that sharing a birthday with him or anyone else means a damn thing. Try processing that.

Have you thought of trying a sense of humor and not being so nasty? Your post was extremely rude and you really should apologize.

Oh noes, I might have to stay after class.

Maybe I also need to write a sentence a hundred times? I don't have a chalk board, but I can do a quick copy paste if needed. LOL

but got accused of it, so i kept my sense of humor and took the chalk board route.

It's not my problem if the poster decided what I was said was nasty. I sure was not going to bother defending myself against the accusation. She made an assumption on how I read the original post and didn't like my reply. She thinks I need to apologize. Maybe I think she needs a thicker skin.

I'm not the one who needs a sense of humor here.

But hey - thanks so much for a reply that didn't involve words, but was the same BS used over at top. DBAD indeed.

Whatever.

I've been saying the same to my British contacts on Twitter. I think they're gonna be had.

in times like this; so will center-right, though the definitions of center-right seem much more fluid.

Texas has humor

Electronic road signs in Texas have been targeted by hackers with messages against presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

Signs on Interstate 30 were changed over recent weeks to read “Donald Trump is a shape shifting lizard,” “Hillary for prison,” and “Free Barrett Brown.” A group of hackers called New World Hackers, who have previously targeted the website of Trump, claimed responsibility.

“As we stated earlier in the past… Trump is a little bitch,” a member of the group tells Newsweek. “Hillary is worse. Barrett Brown is a legend. Hillary should be in prison for her actions most definitely.”

It's a thing

China has asked men between the age of 20 and 45 to show their patriotism in a rather untraditional way. "For the sake of your country, please donate sperm," the government said.

China hopes more young men will become donors to help fill sperm banks as they face shortages. Officials are also concerned that shortages will worsen since the government has allowed more Chinese couples to have a second child. China ended its decades-long one-child policy this year.

They are also using up to $1,000 in cash incentives as well as promises of a new iPhone, the New York Times reports.

How will increased sperm donations help increase the Chinese worker population when the one-child policy resulted in a disproportionately male population?

More sperm in sperm banks will do nothing to increase the shortage of females of child-bearing age in China.

and use only the X sperm, resulting in a massive increase in female children? (There are apparently semi-reliable - but expensive - ways to do that right now.)
