Really, 17, really? This is always an excuse for me to play Edge of 17. Can I resist?

OK, Education time, A Batman is an officer's schlepper in the British Military:

A batman or an orderly is a soldier or airman assigned to a commissioned officer as a personal servant. Before the advent of motorized transport, an officer's batman was also in charge of the officer's "bat-horse" that carried the pack saddle with his officer's kit during a campaign.

The U.K. English term is derived from the obsolete bat, meaning "pack saddle" (from French bât, from Old French bast, from Late Latin bastum).

Twenty years of schooling and they put you on the day shift, look out kid,
...

On this day in:

1683 – Antonie van Leeuwenhoek penned a letter to the Royal Society describing the "animalcules" he had seen with his instrument. This is the first known description of protozoa.

1776 – The Presidio of San Francisco was founded in Alta California, New Spain. The Russkies meandered down the coast as far as the Russian River by 1803, but the US didn't invade and conquer California until 1846, 70 years later.

1787 – The United States Constitution was signed in Philly.

1849 – Harriet Tubman escaped from slavery.

1859 – Joshua A. Norton declared himself "Norton I, Emperor of the United States." Silly, sure, but it got him some mileage in San Francisco.

1925 – Frida Kahlo suffered severe injuries in a bus accident which caused her to abandon her medical studies and take up art.

1948 – The Lehi (Stern gang) assassinated Count Folke Bernadotte.

1954 – Golding's "Lord of the Flies" was published.

1976 – The Space Shuttle Enterprise, was unveiled by NASA.

1991 – The first version of the Linux kernel (0.01) was released, y'all.

2006 – A laked audio tape of a speech by Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány revealed that his Hungarian Socialist Party had lied to win the 2006 election which caaused widespread protests across the country. How irredeemably unsophisticated of them. In the US, our political parties lie 24/7 and it just causes some additional partisan badmouthing of each other.

2011 – The Occupy Wall Street movement started in Zuccotti Park.

Modern education is little more than toeing the line for the capitalist pigs.

Guerrilla Liberalism won't liberate the US or the world from the iron fist of capital.

Not big on such demarcations. But my partner reminded me that some folks will be going down to hang at Zuccotti Park Liberty SQ today.

May get down there is possible later. But I’m traveling today.

Monday marks the 7th anniversary of Occupy Wall Street and I remember it like it was yesterday. It was a community in the truest sense. Throngs of intelligent and diverse people lived together in Zuccotti Park, in a somewhat utopian, communal society. Working groups like Strike Debt, Occupy the SEC and the Alternative Banking Group, came together to write books, hand out literature and strategize on how to eradicate the ills of inequality that plagued our nation due to the devastating financial crisis. There was even a library, a kitchen and it’s own newspaper, The Occupied Wall Street Journal. The energy was welcoming, organically grassroots and emotionally intoxicating — even I became inspired to found my own protest group, Revolution Is Sexy, contributing my talents as a performance artist to voice my outrage.

@Mark from Queens for so many of us. Despite the fact that Obama did everything in his power to shut down Occupy, it still has had a profound effect on the way we view our relationship with the oligarchs. I am one of those who believes that Occupy was the first wave of what I hope will be a major change in our world. Social movements take time and are not always immediately successful, but I still believe that more and more people are becoming "woke" and we have Occupy to thank for jump starting that movement.

Do I hear the sound of guillotines being constructed?

“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable." ~ President John F. Kennedy

I am tired and broken and sick of feeling unrepresented, that's all. The election nooz just makes me swear out loud, online too. That UniParty is killing me slowly, not softly. North county is whiter and wealthier than it was two years ago, my neighbor likes it, she is middle-class. I don't, I'm broke and stuck on a fixed disability income. Different strokes.

When I lived on the fish farm I used to take a "short cut" from Bodega to Bodega Dunes, it bypasses Bodega Bay and the tourist wharf and all that stuff. That drive already had stupendous views, this is cool. The unintended consequence of Flash I guess: Bay Hill Ranch using carbon-conscious practices to help battle climate change

Jon Gay is something of a software engineering legend — he’s a co-creator of Flash, the groundbreaking and globally popular multimedia platform. But these days he spends a lot of his time in West County working with a decidedly different kind of material: cow manure. He and his wife, Misty, are four years deep into a project to restore life and balance to a worn-down coastal farm, Bay Hill Ranch.
...
Their goal sounds simple enough: restore the native coastal prairie, raise healthy, happy grass-fed beef for the local community, and while they’re at it, do something concrete about the warming planet.
...
Disturbing the soil, either mechanically with plows and harrows, or chemically, can disrupt the entire system, and leave it open to erosion, carbon depletion, and ultimately, loss of plant diversity. The only solution then is to boost it with fertilizers and minerals, or restore the ecosystem. Chemicals or biota: Gay has chosen the latter.

Biota right on. Living dirt lovers unite.

In addition to the Bay Hill Ranch, six more plans have been signed with Gold Ridge RCD, Stagnaro says. There’s a 950 acre rangeland/forestland property grazing sheep and cattle, Ocean Breeze Dairy, a 300-acre cow dairy property, which supplies Organic Valley Co-Op, and Apple Bottom Farm, a 5-acre orchard property growing cider apple varieties for Ethic Cider. There are also new plans in process with two vineyards, an orchard and another forestland property.

Groovy. I'd post the whole article I like it so much, but that wouldn't be fair use.
Bottarini Ranch is where I lived/worked, they used to run about 600 head of cattle on 500 acres. It's now part of a conservation area. Future California Coastal Trail.
Conservation groups purchase Estero Ranch in $3.8 million deal

It also includes about three-quarters of a mile of coastline rising to a point 600 feet above sea level. The acquisition eventually will support a stretch of the California Coastal Trail intended one day to run 1,200 miles along the length of the state, from Mexico to Oregon.

I know I know...In the British Empire it was more like Batboy day.

But then we'd misconstrue that to:

Have a great day all!
