Monday Open Thread; On August 28th remember Emmet Till

August 28 is the 240th day of the year. There are 125 days left.

-

Today's number is 28

-

28 is 4 x 7 (more later)

28 is the sum of the first natural numbers. 1+2+3+4+5+6+7 = 28
28 is the sum of the first primes. 2+3+5+7+11 = 28
28 is the sum of the first non-primes 1+4+6+8+9 = 28
28 is the only known number that can can be expressed as all 3 of the above sums.
For example 36 is also the sum of the first natural numbers (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8),
but not a sum of first primes or first non-primes. 10 is the sum of the first
primes (2+3+5) and natural numbers (1+2+3+4) but not the first non-primes (1+4+6).

28 is the atomic mass of Silicon
28 is the atomic number of Nickel
28 is the number of days in the average human menstrual cycle.
28 is the number of days in February in a normal year
28 is the number of dominoes in a standard domino set
28 is the number of grams in an ounce

Holy Shit, Batman, 28 is 4 x 7! Accordingly, x/28, whenever x =4n, is the same as n/7 which gets us back to the freaky repeating decimal (0.142857) discussed on the 7th, the 14th and the 21st. The decimal part of n/7 where n is a natural number not a multiple of 999,999 or 7 is the remainder x 0.142857 repeated on out to infinity. n/14 has similar rules, as does n/21, and n/28 which is, for example ...

1/28 = 0.0357142857142857 & repeat 142857 indefinitely
2/28 = 1/14 = 0.07142857142857 & repeat 142857 indefinitely
3/28 = 0.107142857142857 & repeat 142857 indefinitely
4/28 = 1/7 = 0.142857142857 & repeat 142857 indefinitely
5/28 = 0.17857142857 & repeat 142857 indefinitely

@eyo Will anyone here be surprised to see a Joe McCarthy College of Political Science, a William Calley Jr. Jr. High, or Jim Jones Christian Magnet School?

There is no such thing as TMI. It can always be held in reserve for extortion.

August 28, where o where has summer gone? Heading to our home "down below" today. 26 days in a row is a first and the longest time we've ever spent at the lake house. We have another 3 weeks planned in September and in October. Then the shutters will be put up, the water turned off, and we will head directly into Michigan's long, long winter. Once the snows hit, we can't get into this place unless the snow plow clears the lane. We can't leave the water on because the electricity can't be trusted to stay on and keep the furnace running so the water pipes don't freeze. Michigan is beautiful, and I do like having seasons. I just wish our summer was our longest season instead of winter. God how I will miss summer.

We will be on the road most of the day. Enjoy your day.

We who live west of the 100th Meridian and south of the 39th Parallel envy you!

Move into Azazello's neck of the woods desert! Within 12 months, you'll be positively pining for Michigan, I guarantee!

That's an interesting take from someone who named him/herself after the sea otter, who lives in water almost without interruption. You're not going to find any wild E. lutris in any of the Four Corners States (New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Civilization), I assure you! Smile

So you live in Michigan because of family/social obligations, much like I do in Colorado Springs, Colorado. (Actually, the Pikes Peak Region would be a near-perfect place to live if we could somehow rid it of the retired military officer corps right-wing nut jobs.)

Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.

Hospitals, airports, schools, football clubs: KSA hangs up the ‘for sale’ signs

Apart from the historic initial public offering (IPO) of Saudi Aramco — based on a valuation of $2 trillion, the offering of 5 percent of the shares would be the biggest ever at $100 billion — there is an even bigger schedule of other privatizations, ranging from power stations to football clubs, that has been officially valued at $200 billion.

It marks a historic shift in the economic, social and cultural life of Saudi citizens, comparable to anything experienced by Britons under former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s state sell off in the 1980s, or by Russians in the dissolution of Soviet assets in the 1990s. Some commentators rank it close to the “capitalization” of communist China under Deng Xiaoping, in terms of its global resonance.

But the privatization plan is staggeringly complex. HSBC — one of the Saudi government’s advisers to parts of the program — estimates there will be 100 new listings on stock markets. The current owners range from outright central government entities, through to municipalities and local authorities. The privatizations may take the form of IPOs, but could also see disposals to private equity groups or to trade buyers.

No wonder the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is best U.S. ally ever. Free trade, for Wall Street.

oligarchy sucks
Edit: HSBC where have I heard that before? Oh yeah, 2013: The Crimes of HSBC: Money Laundering, Libor Banking Scandal, Destruction of Indigenous Lands

...In the summer of 2012 the British multinational bank HSBC was exposed for laundering money for drug cartels, Iran, and moving money for an al-Qaida linked Saudi bank.

@thanatokephaloides , thanks. Biggrin Here's some Wiki copy pasta:

Oligarchy is a form of power structure in which power rests with a small number of people. These people might be distinguished by nobility, wealth, family ties, education or corporate, religious or military control.

Plutocracy or plutarchy, is a form of oligarchy and defines a society ruled or controlled by the small minority of the wealthiest citizens. The first known use of the term was in 1631. Unlike systems such as democracy, capitalism, socialism or anarchism, plutocracy is not rooted in an established political philosophy.

Yeah, no it's not picky is it? Any old party or philosophy will do. "unlike systems such as democracy" Haha good one!

I'm posting a YT of the classic tune, "Harper Valley PTA" written by Tom T. Hall and performed by Jeanne C. Riley here.

Tom T. Hall had keen observations about small town politics. "Harper Valley PTA" is one of my fav C & W songs along with John Prine's, "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore."

The song inspired me to write a post at TPW to describe my view about the new TOP Equity Squad. Included is the story behind "Harper Valley PTA".

As a member of the Riley house myself, I'm proud to be a remote relative of that fine artist!

It's compensation for having to admit to the possibility that Bill O'Reilly is also remote kin. But Madame Riley, our singer, spells her name as my Riley kin spell theirs, whereas "BillO" uses another spelling; so it's more likely I'm related to her!
