Monday Open Thread; On August 28th remember Emmet Till
August 28 is the 240th day of the year. There are 125 days left.
Today's number is 28
28 is 4 x 7 (more later)
28 is the sum of the first natural numbers. 1+2+3+4+5+6+7 = 28
28 is the sum of the first primes. 2+3+5+7+11 = 28
28 is the sum of the first non-primes 1+4+6+8+9 = 28
28 is the only known number that can can be expressed as all 3 of the above sums.
For example 36 is also the sum of the first natural numbers (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8),
but not a sum of first primes or first non-primes. 10 is the sum of the first
primes (2+3+5) and natural numbers (1+2+3+4) but not the first non-primes (1+4+6).
28 is the atomic mass of Silicon
28 is the atomic number of Nickel
28 is the number of days in the average human menstrual cycle.
28 is the number of days in February in a normal year
28 is the number of dominoes in a standard domino set
28 is the number of grams in an ounce
Holy Shit, Batman, 28 is 4 x 7! Accordingly, x/28, whenever x =4n, is the same as n/7 which gets us back to the freaky repeating decimal (0.142857) discussed on the 7th, the 14th and the 21st. The decimal part of n/7 where n is a natural number not a multiple of 999,999 or 7 is the remainder x 0.142857 repeated on out to infinity. n/14 has similar rules, as does n/21, and n/28 which is, for example ...
1/28 = 0.0357142857142857 & repeat 142857 indefinitely
2/28 = 1/14 = 0.07142857142857 & repeat 142857 indefinitely
3/28 = 0.107142857142857 & repeat 142857 indefinitely
4/28 = 1/7 = 0.142857142857 & repeat 142857 indefinitely
5/28 = 0.17857142857 & repeat 142857 indefinitely

Good morning folks
August 28, where o where has summer gone? Heading to our home "down below" today. 26 days in a row is a first and the longest time we've ever spent at the lake house. We have another 3 weeks planned in September and in October. Then the shutters will be put up, the water turned off, and we will head directly into Michigan's long, long winter. Once the snows hit, we can't get into this place unless the snow plow clears the lane. We can't leave the water on because the electricity can't be trusted to stay on and keep the furnace running so the water pipes don't freeze. Michigan is beautiful, and I do like having seasons. I just wish our summer was our longest season instead of winter. God how I will miss summer.
We will be on the road most of the day. Enjoy your day.

Good morning, dk, enjoy the ride and think summery thoughts.

We who live west of the 100th Meridian and south of the 39th Parallel envy you!
Move into Azazello's neck of the

I grew up in San Diego, and never pined for snow. to this date
I try to get to the desert for a week or two each year, but not the snow. I'm pretty sure I would vastly prefer Az to Mi

sea otter
That's an interesting take from someone who named him/herself after the sea otter, who lives in water almost without interruption. You're not going to find any wild E. lutris in any of the Four Corners States (New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Civilization), I assure you!
So you live in Michigan because of family/social obligations, much like I do in Colorado Springs, Colorado. (Actually, the Pikes Peak Region would be a near-perfect place to live if we could somehow rid it of the retired military officer corps right-wing nut jobs.)

The omnipotent Putin must have censored it. Or, wait - does it turn out to be a BernieBro who's responsible for everything now?
Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.
A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.

Thanks, eyo, but I'll pass. I'm saving up for a senator myself.

The Other Place PTA
I'm posting a YT of the classic tune, "Harper Valley PTA" written by Tom T. Hall and performed by Jeanne C. Riley here.
Tom T. Hall had keen observations about small town politics. "Harper Valley PTA" is one of my fav C & W songs along with John Prine's, "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore."
The song inspired me to write a post at TPW to describe my view about the new TOP Equity Squad. Included is the story behind "Harper Valley PTA".
One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will. To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.--Tennyson
Jeanne C. Riley
As a member of the Riley house myself, I'm proud to be a remote relative of that fine artist!
It's compensation for having to admit to the possibility that Bill O'Reilly is also remote kin. But Madame Riley, our singer, spells her name as my Riley kin spell theirs, whereas "BillO" uses another spelling; so it's more likely I'm related to her!

John Prine's Classic
You and Bill O' get rewarded with John Prine's classic too.
