Saturday Open Thread - 5/2/26: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good people!
As of yesterday, it is official that when I stare at old people, or mingle with old people, I am exactly what they are staring at and mingling with.
2 invitations I received this week:
Law in the Age of AI: From Core Concepts to Daily Practice - Webcast Replay
Legal Malpractice in the Age of AI: Could Your Coverage Be "Artificial" Too?
Descripion of the class:"There have been more than 1300 reported cases of court sanctions resulting from misuse of artificial intelligence, and seemingly more happening every week. Lawyers are also getting disciplined by bar disciplinary authorities for such AI misuse. Are legal malpractice suits next, and are you covered for it? Find out if you are one hallucinated citation away from a disciplinary action or a malpractice claim. In this comprehensive program, we'll look at what your professional liability covers, and what it doesn't, as well as what you need to know about the risks of practicing in the age of AI ad copy."
Meanwhile, my office insurance went up because the insurance industry algorithms set my property value and just because it is replaceable at about 45% less, no human can argue with the algorithms, or have any input into the replacement price. I pay more, or go without.
This retirement date setting and finishing up remaining cases get more complicated by the day. The city can buy my property today at a low ball price, but my the end of the year, their grant money will come through and they can pay me whatever I ask for.
I have a tough time saying "no" to friends. I took in a new probate case for a friend of the sheriff. It should be over and done in 6 weeks. Fingers and toes crossed.
Well, Trump says the war is over, so why are Navy Seals and special ops ground troops headed to Iran?
As always, we ordinary Americans have no say, no knowledge, no way to plan for war or peace, just some economic disaster and food shortages.
Prepare for the worst, hope for the best, my friends!
Your turn, so let 'er rip!

Good morning, good friends!
Lots of deer, squirrels, a red fox, and a day watching a half-grown rabbit hopping around the yard. The white wing dove regular visitors went from 2 to 4 in number, with one of the males ready to tussle with a bossy woodpecker at the feeder. Feathers have flown.
Friends, this is an open thread, open to anything you wish to share with us, regardless of topic.
Let us all know what you have found that enriches us with knowledge or humor!
Your turn!

Good morning...
Finally got in a Trade Day. Just bought some produce. No rain this AM, but a much needed 3+" last week.
Yesterday was spent getting started with the mowing season, and pruning low hanging branches along the road.
Seems most analysts expect the Iran war to heat up again. Ray McGovern was more optimistic that Putin's call to Trump will hold him back. My bet is Adelson et.al. will talk him into another strike, and if so it will be Katie bar the door. The global economy will pay the price if so.
Hope everyone enjoys their day. Thanks for the OT!

Good morning, LO!
Glad you got some rain. It started raining here in the early hours of Friday morning, and finally stopped about 11 pm. Grocery shopping was postponed until today.
Mowing season started here about a month ago. No pruning to do, but we are planning on cutting down 2 "junk trees" to give room to a beautiful red oak to grow and spread its' limbs.
With Hollers, it's always something, ain't it?
Enjoy your work and at the end of the day, feel good about your accomplishment, dear friend!

Good morning otc, thanks for the OT. Sorry to hear of
the complications, but complications seems to be what life is about these days, plus algorithms also too. My sis told me of a co-worker who wears a t-shirt emblazoned with "What Fresh Hell is This?" which may be a slogan for the ages not merely for office workers but for all of us.
It is my week to cook, so menus are in order, but I keep running into the "will they have any [ ] at farmers' market today (and if not should I get some at the grocers)? Planning is almost harder than cooking. Also plan to make a dozen burger/sandwich rolls today & tomorrow (long rise sourdough recipe).
For reasons unknown but perhaps related to "what fresh hell is this", my mind disgorged
. That seems to encapsulate the history of my entire life, certainly since I became at least minimally politically aware.
Rounding out my little slogan trifecta, I see that the department of malicious and frivolous suits and prosecutions is after Comy for 8647. He should recruit a few thousand bartenders to testify that 86ing somebody only involves physical coercion if they refuse to leave when askd to do so and become obstreperous instead. Just the size of the witness list might generate a directed verdict which would enhance his chances of winning a malicious prosecution suit.

Hey, el!
You don't have to convince me about the uncertainty in meal planning! I have read some articles about food shipments being completely disrupted by shipping delays. By the time the Morroccan tomatoes or bananas from Central America get here, they are rotten. The poorest countries of Africa are technically experiencing famine even as I type. Spirit Airline is gone and done, but they had no dedicated freight division. Thank goodness for small favors.
Well, all my life we have been in a war somewhere, and before one winds down, we already have the next one up and ready to go. Spreading democracy is as good of a cover for asset/treasure theft as could be imagined. (Similar to a particularly strange assassination attempt being great cover to criminalize otherwise legal use of our 1st. Am. right. Newest factoid is a video showing Cole being approached by a K-9 sniff dog being held back by his officer. Srsly?)
We will have several answers to the hell question as the day transpires, dear friend. Then tomorrow, and every day following, we will hunt for the newest answer, won't we?
Good luck shopping and attending to your chef duties!

Thanks!
Some people dread old age, but to me, it is a miracle. Can't count how many months of my life were spent in hospitals, or how many months I spent in a semi-coma, awakening only to eat, bathe, use the bathroom. From birth to age 31 is a long time to be sick, often near death, and age 32 to 74 is a long time to be healthy!
Typically, lawyers retire due to failing health, and my excellent health is why I haven't been planning for it. I was basically working to make travel/play time money, and a bit of savings as it was.
You are inspiring me to try my hand at bread making!

One thing that I find rather bothersome is that with a plethora
of "journalists", experts, analysts, and the like interviewing each other when person number one asks something like "do you think they might do [some really terribly stupid thing]?" you never hear person b say "Nah, they aren't THAT stupid", because, seemingly, they are, in fact, much stupider than even that.

There was just a brief heavy rain here, the first in months. It came with a tornado warning. We've been in "emergency drought conditions." It isn't much different in Southeastern GA from what I've heard. There was a big fire near where some of my family lives there, I called to check on them a couple of days back, my son told me they'll all safe. The fire was on the other side of the river. I think 60 homes were destroyed. Then there's this crazy guy-

Good afternoon, soryang!
Sometimes, I think Florida can't catch a break. All those hurricanes and associated floods, now severe drought and worries about fires.
I am glad your Ga. relatives are ok! Sorry to hear about the insane man who tried to burn it down.
Iirc, we once had asylums where people like that could be housed safely, while also protecting the public, but Reagan stopped the federal funding and closed them. And conservatives call him St. Ronnie to this day.
Well, your representative is more likely to impress a personal trainer than his constituents with at least 2 functioning brain cells.
Thanks for the b'day well wishes, friend, and I hope you get some rain!

Hello, good friend across the Gulf Of Mexico.
The tRump plague was down here staging a reality show at The Villages. I really wish that human waste of time would drop dead. You can tell it's in terrible physical shape. The 6" of pancake makeup on the face, the same photo of the same expression (a corncob up its azz), falling asleep in the oval office, being shot up with more dope to keep it walking when needed, not making any sense when it talks, etc. It desperately needs euthanasia. It sure isn't running the country, and calling all the usual dumbazzed actions like the Iranian joke. It won't make it to 2028. Pizz on it and its sick mindset.
Sp linked a cover of this song in the Weekly Photo Diary. There were the usual gorgeous images in there.
We are finally getting some much needed rain. Hope everyone at your end is well. Rec'd!!
Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.
Good afternoon, obf!
It has been a while since we had a true gentleman in the Presidency. I believe Biden, Trump, and Hillary are all juiced up with drugs to keep them awake and upright. They are all fakes and phonies and should be kept away from any power wielding position. The harm I wish for them is a "guilty" verdict, and a taste of the federal penitentiary system.
Our drought has not panned out. On the contrary, it has been raining consistently since spring sprung.
Next week, we will have visits with the chemo oncologist, the radiation guy, and the surgeon, then deciding on to go for surgery or not. JtC is now Stage 1/t2. Tumor shrank, didn't spread, success/survival rate is very good. If he does get cancer in the future, it will not be colorectal, or organs in the that vicinity. Happy B'Day is when you husband gets a dr's report like mine did!
I always did love that song, chica! Thanks!
