THE CLIMATE CRISIS IS AFFECTING THE WEATHER
~

As the path of the jet stream veers farther south, enabling it to carry warm air up to the Arctic, it also pushes cold air into the midlatitudes. This is affecting all weather systems.

More importantly, warmer air holds more moisture and there is a great deal more warm air now.

When moist warm air meets cold air, weather happens. So, as the ’climate’ warms, more radical and disastrous events transpire.

Freak summer hailstorm buries cars in Mexico's Guadalajara

At least six neighbourhoods in the city outskirts woke up to ice pellets up to two metres deep. Nearly 200 homes and businesses reported hail damage, and at least 50 vehicles were swept away by the deluge of ice in hilly areas, some buried under piles of pellets.

32 Dead as Worst Flooding in a Decade Hits Booming Mumbai
After nearly 16 inches of rain fell last night in some areas, several parts of the city became inundated in waist deep water. Local train and bus services have been disrupted. Schools and colleges were closed, and nearly 50 flights were canceled from Mumbai airport, where a Spice Jet plane overshot the runway. … It was the second heaviest rainfall in Mumbai in the last 45 years … In just three days, the city and its more than 20 million residents have endured more rain than they typically do during the entire month of June.

Climate Change is Devastating India With Heat Waves and Water Shortages

This water crisis is actually related with climate change and the heatwaves, which have been ongoing now in India. Some recent studies done by Columbia University shows that it’s not only the groundwater, which is running dry, but the glaciers are melting at an unprecedented rate since the beginning of 2000.

Europe’s heatwave burns on, but eases from record highs

In France, which experienced a national record of 45.9 Celsius (114.6 Fahrenheit) in the south on Friday, temperatures were set to fall gradually.

Jerome Despey, a wine producer in France’s southwestern Herault region, tweeted photos of shrivelled grapes, and complained of “widespread damage”.

Meteorologists say a weakening of the high-level jet stream is increasingly causing weather systems to stall and leading summer temperatures to soar. Five of Europe’s hottest summers in the last 500 years have happened in this century.

Alaska’s heat wave fuels dangerous smoke, melts glaciers

Alaska's heat wave is driving wildfires and melting glaciers, choking the state’s biggest cities with smoke and bloating rivers with meltwater.

"People should GO, evacuate NOW. Leave immediately. DO NOT delay leaving," the evacuation order said.

In all, there were 354 wildfires covering 443,211 acres in Alaska as of Sunday morning, according to state and federal fire managers.

Melting glaciers and mountain snowfields are bloating rivers and streams across a large swath of south central Alaska, the NWS said.

The melt has brought water levels to flood stage at the Yentna River northwest of Anchorage on Sunday, said NWS forecaster Bob Clay.

More record-breaking heat and wildfire smoke forecast for week of Fourth of July

As of Sunday, the fire was at 68,060 acres with 17 percent contained, said Jonathan Ashford, a spokesman for the Alaska Incident Management Team. There are now 487 firefighters and other personnel working the fire.

By Tuesday, another high-pressure ridge is expected to move over Southcentral Alaska, according to meteorologists. Expect temperatures into the 80s for midweek and the Fourth of July holiday, when many Alaskans hit the roads to camp and recreate outside and when major events like Seward’s Mount Marathon take place.

“It’s forecast to be stronger and hotter than the one we just had,” said Patrick Doll, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Anchorage. “Think of what we’ve been experiencing and tack on 2-4 degrees.”

What Lies Beneath: The Understatement of Existential Climate Risk
Breakthrough, National Centre for Climate Restoraton 2018

What Lies Beneath is an important report. It does not deliver new facts and figures, but instead provides a new perspective on the existential risks associated with anthropogenic global warming. … Firstly, the IPCC is stricken with the Probability Obsession. Ever since statistics was established in the16th century, scientists have tried to capture the complex, stochastic behaviour of a given non-trivial object (such as a roulette wheel) by repeating the same experiment on that object many, many times. If there was a set of well-defined outcomes (such as the ball ending on the red or black of the wheel), then the probability of a specific outcome was simply the number of experiments delivering that outcome divided by the total number of experiments. ... So calculating probabilities makes little sense in the most critical instances, such as the methane- release dynamics in thawing permafrost areas or the potential failing of entire states in the climate crisis. Rather, we should identify possibilities, that is, potential developments in the planetary make-up that are consistent with the initial and boundary conditions, the processes and the drivers we know

Pursuit of profit won’t solve climate crisis
Climate News Network 6-24-19

We have to rethink the whole basis of human behaviour. This means switching to vegetarian or vegan diets, abandoning plastic packaging, and cutting down on air travel (powered by biofuels, if we must, but the biofuel business is lunacy – he uses the word “bonkers” – in energy terms). But these are small things. … Free market capitalism or neoliberalism or any pursuit entirely and only for profit cannot deliver answers to the coming climate crisis. … If the world shared its wealth (and wealth is a proxy for energy resources) more fairly, then it might be a great deal easier to be sure of democratic assent and international co-operation for radical shifts in the way we manage our food, water, transport and our precarious natural wealth in the form of biodiversity: all the wild birds, mammals, fish amphibians, reptiles, plants, fungi and microbes on which humankind ultimately depends.

These include the Mercer Family Foundation, which in recent years has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to right-wing think tanks engaged in climate change denialism, and the Charles Koch Institute, the charitable arm of one of the brothers behind Koch Industries, the oil and gas behemoth.

Climate impact of clouds made from airplane contrails may triple by 2050
EurekAlert 6-27-19

The increase in contrail cirrus radiative forcing is due to air traffic growth, expected to be 4 times larger in 2050 compared to 2006 levels, and a slight shift of flight routes to higher altitudes, which favours the formation of contrails in the tropics. The impact on climate due to contrail cirrus will be stronger over Northern America and Europe, the busiest air traffic areas on the globe, but will also significantly increase in Asia. "Contrail cirrus' main impact is that of warming the higher atmosphere at air traffic levels and changing natural cloudiness.

Meanwhile, the news of the collapse continues to roll in. Instead of the previous worst-case scenario of 1 meter by 2100, the study has doubled that figure. Several scientists this writer has interviewed believe the realistic figure of sea level rise by 2100 will be even higher than this recent study’s prediction.

Adapting to Climate Change in Alaska

In the off-grid homes of Alaskan hunters, naturalists and Native weavers—and in the offices of land managers working in America’s largest national forest—I asked this question over and over again. We were talking about climate change. The answers were across the board: “There are some things we can do. I would hope that there’s more we can do if we discover even better, cheaper energy sources.” “There’s a lot we can do, and we’re not doing it.” “I’m an optimist. There are a lot of things we can do. Politics and greed can get in the way of making some of the tough decisions we need to make as a country and as a world. But we’re already seeing some recognize, from a social standpoint and an environmental standpoint, businesses have a role to play.” “I don’t think there’s anything I can do.” … “The animals I used to catch as a kid are no longer there,” said Kollmuss. “A lot of anger, grief, and hopelessness comes with that.

But not all is so rosy with these tools of fossil energy infrastructure. Pipelines leak and spill – pretty often, actually. They run through fragile ecosystems, under waterways, and across incredibly valuable aquifers. And as crucial as they are in delivering affordable fuel to your gas tank or furnace, they’re pretty tempting targets for anyone who wants to deal our nation’s energy supply a serious blow. In other words, our dependance on oil and gas pipelines makes our nation vulnerable to a terrorist attack, a concern that’s been long established in security circles. Pipelines are typically built and paid for by private companies. But public support is crucial to the industry, and it comes in many forms, from eminent domain takings to subsidies and tax breaks to favorable environmental impact reviews.

European Heat Wave Shifts East; All-Time Heat Records Tumble in Germany
Category Six 7-1-19

"For all practical purposes, the heat wave is caused by human-made global warming,” Columbia University’s Jim Hansen told CBS News in an interview last week. Hansen gained fame more than 30 years ago, in the parched U.S. summer of 1988, when he testified before Congress that the world was seeing the first signs of climate change due to human-produced greenhouse gases. One of Hansen’s strongest statements at the time: ''It is time to stop waffling so much and say that the evidence is pretty strong that the greenhouse effect is here.'' In his CBS interview, Hansen said that the odds of a heat wave as intense as this past week’s in Europe would be extremely remote without the contribution of heat-trapping emissions from fossil fuels.

All-time June Heat Records Fall in 5 European Nations

Europe’s brutal June heat wave is less than half over, but all-time June national heat records have already fallen in five nations. Extreme heat is expected to last through Monday over portions of Western and Southern Europe, thanks to a “stuck” jet stream pattern that has allowed a hot airmass from the Sahara Desert to flow northwards into Europe.Wednesday’s all-time June national heat records:
Poland, 38.2°C (100.8°F) at Radzyń; previous record 38.0°C in Wroclaw in 1935.
Czech Republic, 38.9°C (101.3°F) at Doksany; previous record 38.2°C at Brno in June 2000.
Germany, 38.6°C (101.5°F) at Coschen; previous record 38.5°C in June 1947.
Luxembourg, 36.8°C (98.2°F) at Petange; previous record 36.1°C on June 22, 2017.
Principality of Andorra, 37.8°C (100°F) at Borda Vidal; previous record 36.0°C in June 1935.
Update: an all-time June French national heat record of 42.3°C (108.1°F) was set at Gropsierres on Thursday. Previous record: 41.5°C (106.7°F), June 21, 2003.

Household tissue is a climate issue
Climate News Network 6-27-19

A substantial portion of the tissue products we buy – toilet paper, paper towels and facial tissues – comes from boreal forests, the dense ring of trees which encircles much of the globe just below the Arctic Circle. These forests – and the soils they stand in – contain vast amounts of carbon; when trees are felled and the land they are growing in is disturbed, carbon is released into the atmosphere, adding to the already dangerously high levels of climate-changing greenhouse gases. A new report looking at tissue use in the US says Americans are voracious consumers of tissue products; they make up only 4% of the world’s population yet account for more than 20% of global tissue consumption.

Microbes Hold the Balance in Climate Crisis
Climate Change News 6-29-19

Thirty scientists from nine nations have issued a challenge to the rest of climate science:  don’t forget the microbes. They argue that research is ignoring the silent, unseen majority that makes up the microbial world.  Lifeforms that add up to a huge proportion of living matter on the planet are being largely left out of climate calculations. Microbes have been around for 3.8 billion years, manipulating sunlight and turning carbon dioxide into carbon-based living tissue, and the mass of all the microbes on the planet probably contains 70 billion tonnes of carbon alone.

The thinking goes like this: Iron is a vital micronutrient that phytoplankton need to grow but it's generally scarce in the ocean. When available via dust storm or other source, the phytoplankton slurp up the carbon dioxide during photosynthesis at the ocean's surface. When they die and sink to the ocean bottom, they take the carbon with it - effectively acting as a "carbon sink." … "It seems we've already been fertilizing the ocean. We just couldn't quantify it,"

New research at The University of Texas at Austin shows that injecting air and carbon dioxide into methane ice deposits buried beneath the Gulf of Mexico could unlock vast natural gas energy resources while helping fight climate change by trapping the carbon dioxide underground. … "Our study shows that you can store carbon dioxide in hydrates and produce energy at the same time," … "Second, by swapping the methane hydrate with CO2 hydrate, we disturb the (geologic) formation less, lowering the environmental impact, and we make the process energetically more efficient."

The water future of Earth's 'third pole'
Science Daily 6-26-19

One-seventh of the world's population depends on rivers flowing from Asia's high mountain ranges for water to drink and to irrigate crops. Rapid changes in the region's climate are likely to influence food and water security in India, Pakistan, China and other nations. NASA keeps a space-based eye on changes like these worldwide to better understand the future of our planet's water cycle.

Beyond climate tipping points
Greenhouse gas levels exceed the stability limit of the
Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets

by Dr Andrew Glikson
Earth and climate scientist
Australian National University

The pace of global warming has been grossly underestimated. As the world keeps increasing its carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, rising in 2018 to a record 33.1 billion ton of CO₂ per year, the atmospheric greenhouse gas level has now exceeded 560 ppm (parts per million) CO₂-equivalent, namely when methane and nitrous oxide are included. This level surpasses the stability threshold of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. The term “climate change” is thus no longer appropriate, since what is happening in the atmosphere-ocean system, accelerating over the last 70 years or so, is an abrupt calamity on a geological dimension, threatening nature and human civilization.
...
Climate change is now reaching the end-game, where very soon humanity must choose between taking unprecedented action, or accepting that it has been left too late and bear the consequences
...
We’ve reached a point where we have a crisis, an emergency, but people don’t know that ... There’s a big gap between what’s understood about global warming by the scientific community and what is known by the public and policymakers

He writes about what I like to call the Big Four: abrupt climate change, positive feedbacks, the contributions by GHG other than CO2, and aerosol masking. The bulk of this research has been published after the 2008 cutoff date for papers that were incorporated into the IPCC fifth assessment. Once you factor these in we aren't in the Inconvenient Truth era any more, we're square in the OMG era.

There aren't any non-disruptive changes that will have a significant impact. Even the minimally disruptive changes in the Green New Deal are just a soothing bedtime story.

@WoodsDweller
That comment stood out to me. Does not look promising. Especially when you factor in the nobody-is-getting-it bit. My first reaction was - 'I don need no stikin' study to tell me that cause I can see it with my own eyes'. There are just too many changes happening so fast on a very local level. Trees are dying, insects are fewer, many birds are not here or are fewer except for crows. These things have not changed in ~30 years or so but in the last 5-7 they are tumbling down, racing towards annihilation. It is, to coin a phrase, an lsd bummer.

So, the two things that I see are the disintegration of the jet stream as we know it (which is causing extreme weather)

and the increased inability to produce food (which is caused by extreme weather, which is caused by the disintegration of the jet stream which is cause by global heating).

So, how or in which direction do you think the jet stream will continue to 'ungroup'? (Not sure I want to live in a mad-max world.)

What are your go to sites for answers. Beckwith is my main squeeze. Others?

Lastly, I do not think we have the technological solutions we need. Yet.

And furthermore, even more 'lastly'. I am not sure what the point of this blog is. The people that it reaches, get it and either are doing what they can or feel helpless.

Yes, more people are waking up. But...

"The greatest shortcoming of the human race is our inability to understand the exponential function." -- Albert Bartlett

So, how or in which direction do you think the jet stream will continue to 'ungroup'? (Not sure I want to live in a mad-max world.)

Don't worry about Mad Max. It won't last longer than the fuel, a few weeks, tops. Then it gets really bad.

The 60 degree jet stream is broken. The 30 degree jet stream is weakening. Once it goes, life will be unrecognizable in the temperate zones where most of humanity lives. It depends on Arctic amplification, which goes into high gear when we lose the sea ice, which is soon. We care about the blue ocean event, not year-round ice free. There may be 10 years between the two. I'm not sure anyone will be around to care about the later.

Beckwith has hypothesized about a new jet stream forming up around Greenland. Who knows if that could happen, or how long it would take to develop, or how strong it would be. The Canadian maritimes, New England, Boston, maybe even New York would be in the only remaining Arctic climate. If you don't abandon them, you would need to rebuild them with more insulation and energy delivery. Worthwhile? Or time to abandon them?

Arctic climate in the NE, the rest of the country in Death Valley temperatures, and a permanent zone of megastorms between, from Canada through the Great Lakes down to Florida. Or is that just me telling ghost stories again?

What are your go to sites for answers.

I'm the guy who doesn't think there are any answers, so I'm the wrong one to ask.
I continue to believe that if we had 500 years we could probably fix this. But we don't have 500 months. We may not have 500 weeks. We don't have the technology we need, if we had time to develop it we don't have time to deploy it, and the wealthy and powerful will cling to their wealth and power instead of pursuing solutions. It's that darned exponential function. By the time you see the problem, the sands of time have slipped through your fingers.

I am not sure what the point of this blog is. The people that it reaches, get it and either are doing what they can or feel helpless.

You're doing good work here. Don't doubt yourself. Understanding is an end in itself.

McPherson has described coming to grips with this as a standard Kubler-Ross grieving process. I agree.

"Action is the antidote to despair." -- Joan Baez (I could have sworn it was Edward Abby, but this is what came up)

Interestingly, the Bargaining phase precedes the Depression phase. Activism is a form of Bargaining. Those who can't face the (legitimate) Depression of the end of all things may find solace in activism. This is a great thing when a solution exists, but is no better than any other path when no solution exists.

Acceptance is a grace that is not granted to everyone. This is what I mean when I say that I'm "post-hope". Understanding is the first step.

There was an interesting technical report in a blog post by UW meteorologist Cliff Mass the other day. His group is developing systems to do fine grained modeling of climate change over small areas, so they got a peek at the conditions in the PNW in 2100. A bit wetter and 2C warmer.

But the interesting part is how they do it: Basically they take a bunch of low resolution (150km) climate models that have good skill for our area and patch in a high resolution (12km) model for a small area of interest. Thus is crucial in our area because of all the small scale landscape features.

The project was funded by Amazon, which is kind of crazy given that their business model is endless piles of cheap crap delivered by diesel vans, but the money has run out so the group can't run any more scenarios. In a sanely run civilization, we would be able to do this kind of research on the public dime and not have to compete for resources with bitcoin miners and other parasites...

@Hawkfish
Thanks for that report. It is interesting how they do that on such a small scale. Less snow and more rain. There is so much water in the sound I cannot help but think that is going to complicate things a lot. I does not look like they are looking at sea level rise - six feet by 2100 is what many are saying, Beckwith says more like 20 feet. That would complicate things a lot. It is unfortunate that they have run out of money.

crescendoing climate crisis.

From the comments there:

But of course those countries [Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, and to a lesser extent USA, Russia, Iraq, Iran, Venezuela, Australia and so on] have absolute control over it, and the average person little. OPEC etc. can and have just decided to cut back production for now. In the name of prices and profits. When it no longer serves those ends they will ramp up production again. OPEC Is not new news to anyone, but it struck me with this latest news that wow they could do the same the name of global survival. But they won’t.

That’s true, isn’t it? OPEC & Co. could phase out production in the name of global survival, but they won’t.

@lotlizard
From the NC intro... mind boggling really, but expected I guess. Sigh.

I have trouble understanding how U.N. officials chose to present what they clearly view as an urgent message. Rights don’t matter much to people who are starving or suffering from debilitating diseases. Why is the U.N. not willing to say, “The survival of large numbers of the poor and even one-time middle class is at stake, and climate migrants won’t be well received unless they are rich”? The language used to describe the severity of what faces populations who will be hit early and hard by climate change is bloodless. Perhaps the text comes off as forceful to consumer of NGO-speak, but to mere mortals, it reads as anodyne.

4 July 2019 (Kyodo) – More than 1.09 million residents across two prefectures in Kyushu, including the entire populations of three cities in Kagoshima Prefecture, were ordered to evacuate as of 6 p.m. Wednesday, as continuing torrential rain raised the risk of floods and mudslides.

Before it was rain bombs and tons of rain. This year there is something new. Mega Wind Gusts.

We had one on Saturday night and we have had others this year. It took one large tree and six large branches in our main yard.

There is no warning because it is not a tornado. But it takes down trees like a tornado.

Really sorry to hear about your tree and the branches. We have had some crazy wind here too in the late spring - like nothing I have ever seen. I think I told you about the Windy app. Free online or on an iphone. You can set the wind to different altitudes and see what happens in real time. It is interesting to see the speed.

Hope you garden is thriving. Have a good one...

That was very nice. I could listen to that every day. Thanks, I would not have found that on my own. Also, as eyo says, the Shackleton fix helps.
Just my two cents, but the blog is totally worth it.
Spent part of the day cleaning out the rain gutters. That chore is finally (though very late in the season) finished. I get to cross it off my to-do list and move on.
I have not read a thing here today yet, but I will of course. Thank you for your work here, I think it's so great, not fun, but great ( and I need it) and I absolutely appreciate it.

Thanks. Yes, needed. Usually I am good at taking care of myself. Went to the city (sf) yesterday and it’s always a shocker when I see the teaming masses of humanity gaily (not so much), blindly coursing along. Clueless. But I signed up two more people and also connected with an old friend that will forward this to people. The day before I went to city hall to meet with a councilor about local climate strategy and she stood us up a second time. And one of the women who came with us to talk about climate chaos said that current crazy weather was was not a result of the chaos. Wtf. She is one of the local climate folks. I went off. (I was very nice) and one of the other women totally supported my points and made some good points too. I seriously had to step back from my amygdala. Lol. The receptionist commented that we really knew our stuff. Heh. Thanks for popping in. Have a good one...
