Friday Open Thread
Fridays should be fun! Lobbying for making this an official weekend day...
Good morning all. Leap frog. Have volunteered to fill in for NCTim's Funky Friday OT until he is back online. Just a temporary gig. With minimal rudder, as may become obvious. Driving the proverbial snake wake behind, but helping to keep the lights on in a spontaneous forum.
Off today doing a circumnavigation of Aquidneck Island on a 54 footer. Favorable winds and currents are rare this time of year, so gotta go for it. Getting (high) time to haul her out and put her abed for the winter. Same vessel we sailed up from Carolina in July. She has never experienced a New England freeze. The fall colors should prove spectacular. Will try to get some pix.
For your benefit. Nothing too crazy here...
So, what's on y'alls mind today? Take it away...
BTW, where did eyo go? Anybody know? Curious minds...

Fantastic, should be aglow in red, QMS.
Peak color has arrived at our elevation, past two days have been splendid, rain's coming with wind so this will be short-lived.
Fall is a melancholy time, as if life sifts through a kaleidoscope of memories and change; what a great sail this should be and as you peer into the horizon, you may see us vicariously lapping in the waves and wind.
Happy sailing.

Next to winter, fall is my favorite time of year. Especially now that I live in a place where there are actually seasons. I guess I'm just a "transitions" kind of person.
Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf,
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day
Nothing gold can stay.

good morning
Thanks for the substitute OT, QMS. Your sail sounds lovely. Soak in the beauty and peace.
I love just hearing the wake and wind while sailing...no motor roar. Thought the boat Greta crossed the pond on was quite amazing.
Color just beginning in this corner of Alabama. When we came here 30 years ago or so, fall colors happened about mid-October. Now it is early to mid-November. The changes of the seasons are shifting...as is everything.
I like your idea of Friday's being part of the weekend. It would be nice for folks to have a four day week.
Well, all the best to all of you.

Thanks for the NCTim info, QMS.
I've been wondering about him. Eyo is a survivor and somewhere safe. Enjoy your sail. It sounds heavenly. Rec'd!!

Fall in California
Surprise! We actually do have fall here in California. Maybe not the same bright maple reds you see in Vermont, but our trees do turn golden orange. With all the mountains here, light and color lend itself to a uniquely West Coast autumn experience. Best part about a California fall is that it lasts all the way into December. Autumn being my favorite time of year, this pleases me.

Indeed! Rock Creek, near Tom's Place/Sunnyslope - Just a
bit south of Mammoth - is justifiably famous for its fall color and draws huge numbers of photographers. I think it is in Mono. The eastern slope of the sierras, in that vicinity, is carpeted with conifers, presenting something of an overall green background, while the creek sides are populated with assorted deciduous trees like aspen and such. The result is a red-orange-yellow blaze of color snaking and zigzagging down through the sea of green like a stationary lightning bolt. It really is special.

Have you had the chance to visit the area?
I used to truck over Tioga pass into this area on my way to mammoth lakes which is somewhere I hope people can see once in their lifetime. The Ansel Adams area is just awestrucking awesome! I ran out of film during my last visit there. Big bummer.

I used to go skiing in the Sierra's
Years ago. Never saw it during the Fall, though. Would love to go back with a camera and capture these amazing colors and lights. Yosemite too. Haven't been back there since I was a kid and I such a yearning to see the Sequoia's it's as if they are calling out to me.

Fall seems to bring the poet out in everyone. Here's one of my favorite poets on the beauty of that fleeting time between summer and winter..

Good morning QMS and thanks mucho. Good morning to
everybody else, too. As of about 9 pm last light we received our latest terroristic threat from PG&E to the effect that they may turn off our power, for an indefinite period of time, at some or any time during the "next 36 to 48 hours". According to one of the local papers' website, their CEO promised that this will be the new normal for the next decade. Yesterday we spent the early morning studying maps of where they already had shut off power to see if a planned trip up to the southern edge of Sonoma County would be reasonably feasible (functioning traffic controls and the like) as well as purposive (the businesses we planned on patronizing would have power and hence be able to open on schedule.) The magic 8 ball said go for it & we did, and pulled it off, but it is bizzarely 3rd world going through those processes before going anywhere. While we were there we were offered the opportunity for free tickets to an upcoming event in Santa Rosa (the roads to which were closed as of the time of the offering) and laughed at the idea of people still venturing to plan events under the constant threat of arbitrary power outages.
So, it is a beautiful day here today. I was in the kitchen and looked up and saw a beautiful white crown in the bird bath. That was quite the experience because they are common little suckers (What's that? Oh, just a white crown. Meh.) Something about the sun and morning or whatever, or simply my mood after having a really good night's sleep. It's all in the attitude, I remind myself.
Ah well, I do believe it is time to drag out the generator and give it an oil change before tackling all the other ongoing projects.
Everybody have a good one.

Wtf?
This is outrages. Talk about a whiplash moment. I had to read that sentence twice before the import of it absorbed in my brain. How this is not criminal is just another reminder that capitalism works under a entirely different code of "ethics" and laws from the rest of us.
Blech.

It's all good.
The almost-inevitable result of this will be that within a couple of years the State of California will take over PG&E. (They might even finance it through their new public banking system.)
The earth is a multibillion-year-old sphere.
The Nazis killed millions of Jews.
On 9/11/01 a Boeing 757 (AA77) flew into the Pentagon.
AGCC is happening.
If you cannot accept these facts, I cannot fake an interest in any of your opinions.
Have you seen this?
So PG&E is cutting off power to people and causing major havoc on their lives, but doesn't cut off the power in the other lines? And now there is more homes being burned and lives ruined. The 3 people who made this decision over a wine tasting weekend should be charged with something. If the elite are never going to be held accountable they will continue screwing up people's lives. Enough!

Mornin' Q
Would love to see a photo of that 54 footer along with some fall colors.
Sailing ships fascinate me. Motor yachts, eh, not so much.
Fall brings a new chore for me, collecting leaves, by the truck and trailer load.
I'm building a compost pile on my recently acquired farmland and have hit upon the neighbors to bag up their leaves for me. I have 8 of them around the neighborhood and I supply them with large yardbags.
I collected quite alot last fall and it has become some great garden soil.
Last years pile is about 5 ft. high and 40 ft long. I just kept turning it all year long. It will be ready for spreading and planting this spring.
I hope to triple the new compost pile this year.
Anyhoo, just posted a comment on an essay re: Tulsi Gabbard announces not running for Congress next term and then it disappeared.
Anybody know what happened? JtC?
Thanks for hosting the OT.

Cuba is a dead horse, stop beating it.
No Fall here this year . . .
On October 13 it was still 99 degrees. Then it dove into the 40s and will be in the 30s next week.
Some days still feel like fall. However, we don't get much fall color. My soapberry trees turn yellow. The prettiest plant is poison ivy which turns bright red. Most trees just go straight to brown.
I had forgotten about fall colors until 2014 when I flew home to help a sick family member. Flying into the MSP airport was stunning! Then I went to hang out with my brother at the MN Zoo and wow!! So beautiful.
Treasure fall colors wherever you find them.
