Friday Night Photos Flower Power Edition

Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.

Sunny San Diego has been anything but sunny this week. Didn't see the sun all week and it rained yesterday and today. Next week is supposed to be sunny and mid 70s. Can't wait.
While out and about yesterday I noticed the price of gas has risen to about $5.25 a gal. A few pennies more at one place, a few pennies less at another. I'm glad I ditched the gas guzzler and got a hybrid. All that money I'm saving on gas I can now spend on the ever rising cost of groceries. It seems no matter what you do, you just can't get ahead these days.

The orchids in 1,3,5,7 were taken in the orchid house at the San Diego Zoo. The African Iris in 4,8 is from my front walkway and the rest are from the Carlsbad Flower Fields.

Until I went to an orchid show a few years ago I had no idea how many types of orchids there are. Like you say, many of them unworldly.
Love the local flavor in your shots. Is that taxi Uber or Lyft?

@QMS

Thanks for the local colour! I think Rhode Island deserves a more dignified bird than a chicken ; ). Actually for most of the years I've lived here, the local village was home to many, many Reds that were happily tolerated by the villagers in the vicinity, as well as the many cafe goers. Recently though they've been relocated.

For many years the first Forsythia blossom was cause for celebration, as Spring was close. When all the shrubs were loaded with blossoms it was sensational.

Cheers

@janis b Hi Janis,

Yeah the domestic fowl for a state bird seems mighty questionable. Rhode Island Red is not the only one though. Delaware Blue Hen is the state bird of Delaware. I know these are small states but they each have 400 species of native wild birds in them. I have over 100 species on my RI list, and never saw one of their chickens there. If it is something you brought there, how is it the state bird? Surely there are countless species that better represent the state avifauna than a foul domestic fowl.

Maybe it portrays the 'progressiveness' or modesty of RI'ers, to adopt a bird in need??? Or maybe they needed the bird ; ).

at one time, about 300 years ago, RI was the egg laying capital of the
'new world' meaning the colonies in the eastern NA continent. For
some odd reason, the RI Red was a prodigious layer. Since eggs were
akin to gold, the bird was honored by its industry. Or some such.

I see the foxglove makes your heart beat faster just looking at it ; ).

I imagine it is less often photographed because of its association with being toxic, even though it flaunts its beauty.

Sadly this uploader here isn’t up to snuff to show the crispness or sharpness of the photo. I’m too lazy to do flicker. This was taken just after it stopped raining.

Looks like we inherited your weather. Rain most of the day and for a few days more. Good timing though since it should help us until the water comes on. I have secondary water that comes from the dam.

Hi all,

PHantastic photos SP! Awesome orchids. Quite the group of flowers, aren't they? Amazing. And often with complex relationships with everything from various pollinators to fungus or microbes in the soil. Nice iris too!

Great pics too QMS, SD and Janis! Thank you all!

Lazy Daisy, and since you asked... because it does not open flowers until later in morning.
flrs032624a.jpg

This is likely Sow-Thistle or a near relative. A dandelion sorta daisyish thingie, which seems to barely open flowers before going to puffball. The flower heads on every one in the yard that is not behind a fence is eaten off by deer.

@janis b great idea Janis, I think there are some plants like that.

This grows in open often ruderal (disturbed) areas and soils, here anyway. They refuse to open despite the sun being on them the first few hours of morning. I guess they are just lazy? Smile We get patches with from 200 to 500 or more flowers in a fairly small area. By time you get far enough away to get the whole patch, they are just white dots.

take care!

@Socialprogressive In general the common Dandelion here in the U.S. that the people have spent countless millions at war with in their yards, is a non-native flower originating from Europe. It has medicinal purposes though, so not all bad. Here in Texas we have a native species that looks mostly the same, Texas Dandelion. It has some black dots in the flower the Euro model does not.

It's a great tune too.... Charlie's drums in the outro are great.

John and Pual sang backup vocals, Nicky Hopkins on harpsichord, Brian Jones on Mellotron.

Sp, I love those orchids!!! Got 2 blooming, 2 more getting set, but orchids bloom when they feel like it. Sorta like cats. LOL. snoopy, your zinnia is really pretty, and the rain drops set it off like crystals. Well, we got some much needed rain just a short while ago, but the Sandbar Peninsula is going into summer mode. YECK! Hope everyone is well. Rec'd!!

When I was in the orchid house, one of the zoos horticulturist there said it could be up to 20 years for an orchid to bloom. They didn't say anything about how long it takes for cats to bloom.

@Socialprogressive the sneaky, smelly ones. The small blooms are hidden in the plant, but you can locate them by their powerful, coconut scent. My friend who gave me the cuttings calls them, "Hawaiian Tropic." These 2 plants act like they have a mind of their own, and they do. LOL. Hence, the cat crack. Smile

The leaves are all wrong (Wood Sorrel has trifoliate leaves, like clover, only heart-shaped). Also it's rather sour, so not surprising deer wouldn't like it.
