"Floods, I'll get around to it"--Obama, "but I got 18 more holes"

Yup, our sensitive, caring, concerned president is really being proactive regarding the worst natural disaster to hit Louisiana since Katrina. Pardon my bluntness (so when am I not?) but playing golf in Martha's Vineyard with the upper crustics while the Hoi Polloi in LA are manning bucket brigades, commuting to what businesses are still open by kayak and going hungry is the most hypocritical, disgusting thing yet done by this hypocritical, disgusting President.

Boy, if he really wants to help Hillary, this is a helluva way to do it. I don't know which is a better analogy: Fiddling while Louisiana sinks or Let them eat (moldy) cake.

Well, Donald Trump stole a coup from BooHoO by visiting the flood land and dispensing supplies for relief. Now you tell me who looks more presidential now? Sadly, Donald Trump instead of Tiger Woods in Massachusetts.

Oh yeah. What about "what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander?" Didn't Both Medusa and BooHoO rail at Shrub for the latter's cursory fly-over LA after Katrina on his way to Washington, cutting short his vacation. Even tho Bush's FEMA screwed up the rescue and resuscitation efforts, he did at least try.

It was only after Orangehead arrived at the scene that Obama was willing to take off his golf cleats and take a look-see. By the way, what has HRC had to say about this? Nothing but her speechwriters are working on it.

As soon as he was elected he didn't need to give any more shits - and he hasn't.

the Texas floods have mostly been welcome. They filled up the lakes and aquifers. The water table in my area is way up. I have had the absolute best gardening season of my 24 years living here. Yes, and after over a month with no rain and temps over 100 . . . this rain has been wonderful. It looks like spring. Just plain old cloud cover gives us great relief. The beautiful tiny spring time lilies are popping up all over. And we have the very beautiful "Snow on the Mountain" flowers blooming. They bloom in rain or drought.

But, our climate disasters have been terrible. The roads keep washing out. In 2012 Borer Beetles killed all of my Soapberry trees . . . hundreds of them! The polar vortex and then the heavy rains killed many crops.

Both Obama AND Trump were asked to NOT come to LA. When a President or a Presidential candidate comes in the middle of a crisis, there is a huge logistical headache - roads have to be closed, areas secured, etc. Trump went anyway and was not really invited. The governor is just being gracious. I am NOT an Obama fan. But I have heard reports that the FEMA response was WORLDS better than over Katrina. I don't like the optics of him on vacation while this is going on - but he was asked NOT to come and did not.

Let's not forget my previous post which I guess you did not watch, where O was on the rampage cause Bush was in his plane...what changed? The Guv of LA? Like the one during Katrina that was out to lunch? Oh yeah, sorry, false equivalency.

are you making such a fuss? Nobody claimed the Federal response has not been forthcoming. The issue is the double standard of Obama making political speeches bashing Bush for doing what Obama is now doing. If it's right for Obama now, it was right for Bush then and Obama should not have turned it into a political football.

It is a false equivalency. Bush knew that a class 5 huricane was barreling toward New Orleans and did nothing. He also had a very poor response afterward. Obama had no warning of this - but the federal response was there.

In this case, the local New Orleans/Baton Rouge National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office says it recognized the potential for flooding as early as Aug. 8. On that day — nearly three days before the storm arrived — they began issuing advisories and warnings about heavy rain. One rainfall map warned of "isolated flash flooding" later in the week.

Between Tuesday and Friday, when the first flash-flood emergencies were issued, the local weather service office for Baton Rouge says it issued at least a dozen advisories and warnings about flooding in southeastern Louisiana.

like almost a week to even report on the thing, hardly surprising. And if he were to go there, or her, or any of them, God forbid someone would mention this is a 1000 year flood event, I mean really, HOW on earth would any of them answer to that? They'd have to maybe, somehow, sorta admit that climate change thingy might be happening and we simply cant have that. It's too important that we all think this merry go round can go on forever, and that someday, if we try real, real hard and maybe shed some of our blood in the streets, they just might, might, might throw us a few more crumbs. Gotta keep that hope alive at all costs ya know.

Today I hope they all burn in hell, and I don't believe in hell or heaven, but I can't think of any other way to put it without openly espousing violence, and we can't have that either. WE must keep the moral high ground while these bottom feeders sink as low as they can get.

If the President visits, local law enforcement comes under the command of the Secret Service. They have to drop everything - like rescue efforts - to provide security for the President. A no-fly zone is established, so no more supply drops, no more medical evacuations. In short, all Obama can do there is get in the way. Michelewln is right, Louisiana doesn't want him there yet.

As for Trump, not everyone was happy about him. http://www.rawstory.com/2016/08/where-is-the-fcking-check-louisiana-reli...

Secret Service would have to make, especially the no-fly zone. It would have served his "legacy" to not look like an indifferent asshole, by simply going to Washington working on a recovery plan and actually do something besides talking to Jeh Johnson.

BTW, I am not defending Orangehead either--but he made political points with those who don't dive too deeply into the facts.

So, have H's scriptwriters come up with anything yet besides "My heart (cold and icy as it may be) goes out to the wonderful people of Louisiana"?

I'm just the pass-through, it was somebody here who wrote a post on that, someone with flying experience so was familiar with all the trouble a Presidential visit causes from that aspect.

I never hear much about Hillary any more, although I mostly just read headline news. I think this hiding thing she seems to be doing is also bad optics. Didn't she just have a private fundraiser? Good optics would be taking a check from there and presenting it to Louisiana!

While I agree absolutely that Obama should have cancelled his golf games and gone immediately to the drawing boards to work on a plan, I don’t think it would have been beneficial to travel there knowing the impact his entourage would have on the very immediate recovery efforts on the ground.

I think you should remove this diary. Although Obama should have probably cancelled his round of golf - He SHOULD NOT have flown down there. When the president visits - it is a huge distraction and a logistical nightmare. From the reports I have read - FEMA is responding well.

I was unaware of the security measures necessitated by Obama's visit disrupting relief services. Note I did not condemn the current FEMA efforts--but only those directed by Shrub's incompetent bucket brigade.

As far as appearances go, continuing his golfing was a poor choice.

No. Bush went down only after it was obvious that his FEMA was totally inept and ill prepared for the job. He didn't 'try' until it was too late. That is not the case here. I agree. Obama should not have been golfing.

With folks from fema, folks from the Louisiana delegation, folks like that wouldn't help & get around the distraction bit?

Look, the fact is that a couple days before "Obama would be a distraction" came out, one of obama's secretaries was in Louisiana & said 'the president can't be everywhere' in response to a question re why he wasn't there. The next day it was 'Obama had more important things to do'. Distraction is the 3rd story & obviously in reaction to blow back on the 1st 2 ham handed attempts to explain his absence.

He's not getting a pass from me.

I don't understand the instinct of progressives to not expect Obama rise above the standards, of mostly republican and republidem presidents? There really were Presidents better than him. JFK, & FDR come to mind. Even without this, he was shitty on wallstreet issues, & he deliberately backtracked on his stance against freetrade and for a public option. He is a right winger, and he does play golf too damn much.

The president has a Head of State function, not just an administrative one. He needed to acknowledge the disaster and say, more or less, we'll work together and get through this. That's one thing Bill Clinton always did very well.

Every time there's another disaster and we get silence from the White House or else some functionary puts out a press release, a week later, that says nothing - or worse, says that he's a busy man (how dare you bother him with this trivia?), when we know he's just busy golfing - I miss Bill, for all his terrible faults. He was very comforting in crises. Obama doesn't even pretend to feel any responsibility for us peasants.
