Finding a Way to Vote for a Better Future

Hi Guys, I'm going to vote for Hillary Clinton if she wins the primary.

Oh my God, though, this whole thing is getting so toxic, I mean, ya know? Referring to TOP mostly, I can't stay there very long, it's like I'm being exposed to radiation. So I want to say that the [edit for clarity] picture of the drowning victim reaching for the pices of flotsam that is a c99p logo is apt. Caucus99percent is that life raft, that buoy that we all need to survive. Initially, I didn't post at orange because I was new. But that was twelve years ago. Then it was because I was so rapt in reading all of your good points that I thought "well, its already been said well enough right there". Guess I'm a Yankee that way. Smile

But toxicity has a way of spreading. In a previous post I warned of the dangers of hatred, and how hatred is learned. There is a groupthink there. All groupthinks are dangerous because they do not revere the Truth in a Platonic / Socratic / Aristotelian sense.

So wow, is the difference this time that the internet has accumulated such a litany of transgressions by HRC that we now notice and recall anew what Bill also did? We can count off the sins on our fingers. And it leads to righteous hatred! You can tell when people say they can't stand her voice. We all can relate.

The reality now would be if it were her versus Trump, if the worst happens in the primary and she wins (I would prefer Trump to Cruz, but look, we elected Reagan, so... anything is possible). Bernie will have left his mark on the public discourse, he will have energized an entire generation of up and coming Americans, and he inspired a fundamental way of viewing our reality that can lead to real and good changes in all of our lives, because that is always his aim. He knows that we are all happier when we are all happier.

I take this very seriously, but from my perspective, the alternative to boycotting the general... well, let's listen to the song... it's all been said before...

am more than tired of the "hatred" meme. It was never correct to begin with, and now has been beaten into the dirt along with the sexist meme.

One does not have to hate a person to decide that a person's policies not in keeping with their own values. Personally, I use her record to make my decisions. It has nothing to do with her personally. I also did not vote for Bill Clinton or Obama either because of what they stood for...corporate America, not because of any personal feelings for them.

As for her voice, what I do not like is the sound of gloating. For others, the actual sound itself may be irritating for reasons other than hatred. There are plenty of people that I cannot listen to for long even when I like their message because their voice strikes my ears harshly.

This is advertised as a free country. You are welcome to vote any way you choose, as am I. What I do not need is someone labeling or judging me for because I do not see things their way.

For starters I firmly believe that every voter should make their own calculations and it sounds like you're not going into this blind or misinformed by MSM.

I think the political calculus of lesser evil is complex and I could argue it either side. For me, I've decided there are only two ways to talk to politicians... money and votes. For the most part they don't need my money, that's what the wealthy elite are for. What they do need is my vote. So the one and only way I have to talk to Hillary Clinton is to withhold my vote.

In doing so, I recognize the problems that creates which is why I can't argue with your position. In a choice of evils scenario there is no clearly best choice... just a bunch of shitty choices.

the lesser evil thing is complex - this is my way through the complexity.

I think of it in terms of short term versus medium and long term. If we go the lesser evil route the short term may be marginally better and the medium and long term will muddle along much the same as the short term. If however, we are prepared to accept a slightly worse short term then we stand a chance of a much better, and even good, medium and long term.

In practical terms this means giving the Dems a bloody nose now. This will force them leftwards at the same time as age demographics are doing the same. Four, or even eight, bad years then a total reset doesn't seem like a bad option at the moment.

What follows is a ragged, rash crap hole of a response, but so be it. I'm unhappy with our path and am trying to find anything pleasant to think about.

Look at the GOP. Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford. All things considered, these were moderates who kept the fringe of the party at bay. But once Reagan broke through, the party's course was forever changed. Every nominee since then has been so far to the right of Ike, Dick, and Jerry.

Then there is the party that used to represent our side. With the rise of Reagan and the embarrassingly bad elections of '80 and '84, our nominees are also heading to the extreme. The extreme right, albeit from a different starting point. The Dems have won with these candidates and lost with these candidates. But challenges from the left have been inconsequential until this year.

If Hillary is installed in the white house, there is little chance for there to be a serious challenge from the left in the near future. Success beats the snot out of justice. I feel very much like I did in '88, when I felt like a Bush win would pave the way for a brighter '92. I was wrong then, though I didn't realize hoelw wrong until I could not bring myself to vote for Bill's reelection. I might be wrong now, but I am starting to hope for, if not a Bernie miracle, a GOP win in November. That is the only hope of ending the grip of the Clintons and their cohorts allowing someone not easy in millions to represent all of us. Short term disgust might just be needed for long term adjustments. Please convince me I'm wrong.

That's fine. I understand your thinking.

One thing I'd like to say, and I'd really like you to understand this. I'm not trying to convince you to change your vote.

Donald Trump's chances of winning the general election are about equal to that of Cruz coming out in favor of gay mairraige.

The normal response here is something like... "But his polls are so high! How can you say he can't win the general when he's doing so well now!"

The reason I can say that is because I pay attention. I think. I watch how elections go. Therefore I don't panic and throw up my hands and run in circle, screaming about the seemingly random nature of the universe.

The Republican primary election is absolutely nothing at all like the general election. For one thing, a lot more people vote in the general then in the Republican primary.

For another, most of them are not racists. This is another huge difference. Some are, not enough.

The numbers of people who are willing to vote for Trump are nowhere remotely close to the numbers he needs to win, and as he continues to make stupid mistakes he will hurt himself more.

I'm fine with you voting for Hillary. I'm not fine for this rampant idiocy and panic that seems to run rampant this time of year.

If you'll notice, Republican insiders hate his guts. This is not because they are afraid he will win. it's because they are absolutely positive he's going to lose.

It's always been very easy to make yourself look good in the primary by insulting people who are definitely not in your party. Like Muslims. And Mexicans. And sexually active women. And well... I don't know who he'll go after next.

That always helps you in the primary, and it destroys you in the general.

Donald Trump is literally so offensive that people will register to vote just to vote against him. People will do this who have never voted before. He's such an awful candidate that he's going to help us long term.

I'm not saying its impossible for him to win, but some pretty major things will have to happen. He does not have the numbers right now. That is not a guess.

Every election, people tell us that we have to go with the lesser evil, because the Republican is insane and will win otherwise.

We have now reached the point where a raving asshole with no experience in politics has terrified people across the political spectrum. He's pretty much unelectable. Even if he didn't make any more mistakes, I don't seem him winning. He's going to make a lot more mistakes guys. That's how he is programmed, he can't stop himself.

Remember this in four years. The Republican candidate will be completely unelectable again. He'll say horrific, stupid things that only the Republican base will love. Everybody else will hate it.

And we will have to vote for Republican lite again to stop him... even though he's a dead man walking.

This is how the country dies right here. Its not because the Republican gets in. Its because we buy into this bullshit, and we are all so confused by the media that we've forgotten what critical reasoning looks like.

Two days ago from an ABC interview with Ted Cruz:

"What would you as President do to protect me and my husband from that institutionalized discrimination?" Todd Calogne, a New York Republican, asked Cruz during a town hall hosted by ABC's "Good Morning America."

...

"When it comes to religious liberty, religious liberty is something that protects everyone," he said. "It is our very first amendment, very first phrase that is protected in the Bill of Rights."

That possibility of Trump getting elected just got a little closer.

of gay mairraige. I looked at the comment and that is not what is happened. That is classic political speak.
Later on if his supporters bring up this conversation, he can say he spoke abstractly of defending an amendmant
but he can still attack allowing homosexuals to marry later.

What he said is it is up to the states, not the federal government, which is pretty free thinking for Cruz. Not denouncing gay marriage in its entirety leaves room for growth. Ask HRC (and she DID denounce it).

And I concur about the Donald, I still talk to Republican-believers and Trump is a No Way. So I am calm about him, his adulators, not so much. If only, so many if onlys, wrong turns on road forks for the trajectory of the USA. Scary times.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

Why did Trump have a really poor last three weeks and yet hit it out of the park in the NY primary? He will moderate for the GE, he's already told us that. Meanwhile he throws read meat to his supporters. He's a made for TV personality, tells it like it is, at least according to his supporters. Remember Reagan? Take another look at Trump's "Apprentice" series. He did a good job and won some awards for it. The republicans will all fall in line because they hate the Clintons and love to pummel Democrats. Trump is already pulling significant support from indies.

I live in the PRM, the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts, and we are constantly misjudging republican candidates for governor. We live in a bubble and nominate unelectable Democrats with regularity. The visceral hatred for the Clintons in middle America will bury her in the GE. She stands zero chance of surviving a head-on assault from Trump, and for good reasons.

"The Republican primary election is absolutely nothing at all like the general election. For one thing, a lot more people vote in the general then in the Republican primary." Change "Republican" to "Democratic" in this sentence.

Ever seen that bumper sticker that says "I'm driving like this just to piss you off!"

I laugh when I see it because I know it's probably not true.

HOWEVER, as for voting for Trump, when I lived in the South I knew people (people who usually don't vote) who are just ornery enough to vote for Trump JUST TO PISS YOU OFF! "You" being all "those people" who have made it so they can't even ______________ (generic personal peeve) anymore without someone accusing them of not being politically correct.

And they're not just in the South, they are all over the country. They don't know how bad it can get, or don't care.

What I'm getting at is, I know too well that I might help Trump or Cruz or Ryan get in the White House by not holding my nose for Hillary, but I'm pretty sure I can't vote for Hillary no matter what (because of war and climate change), therefore I really, really hope somebody gives us a better alternative. Bernie still can win at this point. But if they don't allow him to get the votes required, then I hope Bernie comes up with another direction to point us in -- that doesn't start with the letter H.

Can't do it. Cannot vote for someone who hangs out with murdering bastards like Henry Kissinger and her husband's 'brother from another mother' GWB. The only weapons I have to use against the oligarchy is my voice and my vote.

I'm almost 60 and I will be god damned if I ever hold my nose when I vote again. If a bad candidate gets elected by the majority, HRC, Trump or Cruz, well by damn as a society we will reap what we have sown by our passivity and greed. I have done as best as I can do to influence others to vote for their best interests, not against them.

My vote is sacred, my dad literally bled for Our Constitution in WW2 and I will not soil his memory ever again by voting in fear rather than in hope.

FEEL THE BERN: "But such is the irresistible nature of truth, that all it asks, and all it wants, is the liberty of appearing." - Thomas Paine
"Here I Stand, I can do no other." - Attributed to Martin Luther, 1521

Appreciate the post! I will not vote for Hillary. As a little background I am 58, have donated, campaigned and voted for Democrats for 40 years. This is not a sexist decision, Elizabeth Warren was my top choice of Presidential candidates and was disappointed she decided not run. It was a yuge mistake on her part in hindsight.

The incremental neoliberal policies are not the reason for my decision. I would do fine if those policies continue, the country would do better with Bernie's policies. I am old school in thinking government policies should help the country and it's citizens.

The neoliberal policies and snarky attitude are a symptom of a dangerous behavior; blind ambition. Hillary and Bill want the job more than changing the direction of the country. Having lived through years of "Tricky Dick" Nixon I see the same ambition and love of power in the Clinton's. They are dangerous for America and should not be given any more access to power in the US.

But if he doesn't, we keep barreling ahead as an independent coalition. We don't just fade into obscurity.

If the left falls in line behind Hillary we are endorsing her and third way politics. We are saying unequivocally that the 3rd way was correct. Our voice becomes meaningless because we prove that we can be ignored with impunity.

If, on the other hand, we can collect our votes somewhere visible then we become a coalition that cannot be ignored... not if you want to win. Further down that road is a coalition which can enable a viable 3rd party... green or something new. But I see it as imperative that we not just face into obscurity as reluctant 3rd way supporters.

If Democrats know they can safely ignore us then they will.

I would say working and voting for HRC is what “they” — that would be the elite, the Deep State, the 1%, the establishment, whatever you want to call ’em — want and expect us to do now.

There Is No Alternative, right?

But doing what “they” want and expect is a big part of how society, country, and world came to be as they are.

So different people will come up with different ideas about what that is, but I’d like to see everyone do something new. Try acting in a way that “they” don’t expect and can’t predict.

Every election before now I have done the same. But not this time. Its been made blatantly clear to me that this party doesn't represent me, and if we have to go through fire to get to the other side, so be it.

But also, I honestly don't know that I could determine the lesser evil in this election. All potential candidates, Trump, Cruz and Clinton, are more evil on some issues and less evil on others.

I won't consent to it anymore. Sorry.

Social media has the power to change the dynamics of an election very fast. Most of Bernie's support comes through social media despite the efforts of the mainstream media to shut him out. Those same Facebook pages, blogs, twitter accounts etc that are helping to rally us for Bernie can easily switch to Jill Stein overnight. The revolution might not be able to be televised but that matters less and less as people reject televised BS.

Beware the bullshit factories.

After hearing about the Election fraud in NY and silence by Hillary's campaign about it, my mother, who has been a Democrat all her life asked, "If she wins, who are we going to vote for in Nov.?"

This was a shocking question from her. We had never discussed the possibility of not voting for the Democratic nominee until she brought it up.

My answer was, "Since we are Idahoans, where the Repubs will win the general, we have the freedom to not vote for Hillary basically guilt free.
But, since we consider Bernie our political leader right now, we can wait to hear what Bernie wants us to do before we decide."

I imagine my mom and I will protest-vote against Hillary to keep her numbers down.

If I lived in a swing state I would definitely be waiting to hear Bernie's plan on how to vote. And then weigh the options.
