Went there to check what is being said about Ukraine. I should have known better. I saw a diary from someone who I think is loooong time poster, and very popular. She wrote an article favoring forcing out the Russians out of all Ukraine territory because Nazis, etc. She admitted it was a hard position to take as she is an anti-war Buddhist and violated everything she believed in. She had no clue that what she advocated would ensure World War III and very highly likelihood a nuclear exchange. But not to dump solely on her, but many of the comments approved of going mano-o-mano with Russia--with one guy advocating nuking several Russian cities to teach Putin a lesson.

But really a anti-war Buddhist advocating a major bloody war???

I wrote about her in my Russia xenophobia essays and I had the same reaction to it as you did. Anti war people are now behind killing Russians and assassinating Putin the dictator…. And their xenophobia is appalling, but I blame Hellabitch and democrats for lying to them and brainwashing them into chucking their values.

Looking at today’s wreck list it seems that they are losing touch with reality. Now we’re being told that some lady from Ukraine visited maralargo and that she’s a spy who was Trump’s handler and all accusations by the FBI are true and people are just guilty without even having a trial. And the affidavit has been released and even though it’s heavily redacted it’s really bad for Trump.

i would imagine that the contradictions that exist in other religions exist in buddhism as well. it doesn't surprise me all that much to see people rationalize violence as necessary regardless of their faith tradition. religious beliefs seem to be for most people a thing of convenience.

Looking at all the brown and dead lawns around Ogden seems to have paid off since the dam is mostly full this late in the year. Now if we just have a decent winter we can fill up the other lakes that are low and maybe get some water in the great salt lake and Powell.

This is how it looked last year and it’s full to the spot where you see the tall grass. Huge difference huh?

In case you missed it the Trump affidavit dropped today and this is what it looks like.

Also in case you missed it the Zuck admitted that they told him to make FB squash the Hunter Biden laptop story.

Free and fair elections my arse! This is the 2nd time they interfered in the last 2 elections. The 1st time they covered for HerHeinous and her using her private email server for classified information and no one there even mentioned that ALL of her emails were found on Anthony Weiner’s laptop going back to 2006. That’s a huge breach of protocol.

Over my dead body! But young people across the pond are already getting chips in their hands so they can pay for their coffee more easily.

I visited a dr. this morning for some cosmetic procedure to laser away some burst capillaries on my leg caused by that copperhead bite 3 years ago. he is my dr., my client, and my friend. His top nurse is my niece, so we always speak freely with each other. He ranted about how Biden is so far gone with dementia, that those keeping him going should be put in prison. (He is military, knows something about protecting the country.) He has treated elderly patients for decades. I think he brought it all up with me because he wanted to talk about governing laws and Constitutional issues.
So, tonight, I had my usual Mandarin orange, peeled, presented in a cup made by the bottom half of the peel. If a couple has to have a "thing", that is way better than Brown treated his partners to an ass whipping!
I hope your trip was a good one, sorry you didn't get the barbecue you had sought. Try again!

@CB
Hi CB,
Thanks for sharing. I really enjoyed the part of the conversation regarding Planet of the Humans and how much heat Michael Moore took for producing the film.

For those less familiar with the topic of Green Energy, consider a recent presentation by Finnish minerals professor Simon Michaux who recently completed a detailed assessment of the minerals required to build an all electric energy grid to replace fossil fuels.

As professor Michaux uncovers, there are insufficient minerals available today to build even version one of the dream which includes solar panels, wind turbines, storage batteries and hydrogen fuel cells.

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBVmnKuBocc&t=6s]

Professor Michaux does not directly address the environmental impact of the proposed mining but Alice Fridman does in her post "Why mining to make renewables will destroy the planet".

https://energyskeptic.com/2022/why-how-mining-metals-for-renewables-will...

In particular she draws from the book by G. Piton "The Rare Metals War: The Dark Side of Clean Energy and Digital Technologies" which explores the deleterious environmental impact of mining.

https://www.amazon.com/Rare-Metals-War-digital-technologies-ebook/dp/B08...

For an ongoing dialog regarding "Energy Blindness" in the west, Nate Hagens podcast on energy and the folly of pretending renewable energies will save us is well worth a listen. A few recent episodes are linked below.

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eo1iMJcKkD0]

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Q23wwyksdY]

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXertTq0knU]

Finally, some hard facts are always compelling when discussing energy. The following link is a graphic of US energy flows in 2021 from Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. Notice how little energy used in the US is from renewable resources despite decades of subsidies. Also notice that roughly 80% of US energy use is the direct consumption of fossil fuels for industrial, heating and transportation purposes. Solar panels and wind turbines will not easily replace those uses of fossil fuels.

@ThouArtThat
must be replaced (but not also reduced), neither green energy nor continuing our fossil fuel habit will lead to a sustainable future. Fossil fuels are finite and remaining reserves will be more difficult (expensive and energy intensive) to bring to market. Solar energy, in all its derivative forms, is limited only by the surface area of the planet, the lifespan of the sun and our technical abilities in harvesting it.

While there is still some debate about the number of humans that can live in a ‘sustainable’ manner on planet Earth, it is certain that a smaller number of human’s , all other things being equal, increase the possibility of our living within the means of planetary resources in a sustainable manner.

The other obvious factor is the amount of resources being consumed by each individual .

Starting with the assumption that a replacement of our current fossil fuel based energy consumption is required conveniently ignores these other aspects which can and must be addressed. Kicking the can down the road by abandoning renewables and continuing our embrace of fossil fuels would be no solution at all.

Capitalism is the extraordinary belief that the nastiest of men for the nastiest of motives will somehow work for the benefit of all."
- John Maynard Keynes

@ovals49
Hi Ovals,

The way I phrase this is that solar panels and wind turbines are insufficient to operate western industrial society at present scale and scope. In other words we either reduce per capita consumption with present world population or we reduce present world population.

As to the mix of energy sources, if nothing changes (capitalism continues unchecked), all energy sources will be used to depletion. And once fossil fuels become economically nonviable, all other sources will also become economically nonviable because solar panels and wind turbines require fossil fuels to mine, manufacture and distribute. No fossil fuels, no wind turbines and solar panels.

Based on human history and observation, this human suspects that humanity will continue to use energy without regard to the consequences. And then, sometime in the foreseeable future, western industrial civilization will collapse due to its own complexity and reliance on energy sources that have run dry (no longer economically viable).

@ThouArtThat
especially in China. There are also other factors that can ameliorate global warming. I'm confident that human ingenuity can surmount the difficulties once it puts its mind to it. (Another factor is food production. In the United States, there is a lot of food waste. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, food waste makes up approximately 30% to 40% of the food supply.)

What the 2021 China Wind Power Boom Means for the World
04 February 2022

Wind power in China is booming, according to data from last year. Offshore wind saw a 16.9 gigawatt (GW) increase in capacity, greater than every other country combined in the past five years. On top of that, China brought online an extra 30.67 GW of onshore wind energy. Together with solar power, China lays out a clear blueprint for pursuing a net-zero future. So, what’s stopping other countries if the most carbon-intensive economy can do it?

Renewable Energy in China – Solar Power, Wind Power Capacity and Offshore Wind Turbines

China’s renewable energy boom is making headlines. Its solar power capacity, for example, by the end of 2021, reached 306 GW, with a record 54.9 GW added just last year. China is planning to expand its offshore wind capacity in the coming years. In total, solar and wind now account for 635 GW of power, making up 26.7% of China’s total national capacity. This energy capacity is expected to increase to 1,200 GW by 2030. Yet, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), China will meet this target four years earlier—if current speeds are consistent. China’s wind power capacity has increased beyond expectations, and a lot of power comes from offshore wind turbines.

...
Comparing China with Other Countries

China’s efforts towards net-zero carbon dioxide emissions are staggering compared to other countries. For example, China’s solar capacity spree in 2021 saw it build as much in one year as Germany has over its entire history. China’s onshore wind power added in 2021 alone exceeds what the UK, Spain and France have in total. Additionally, the 16.9 GW of offshore wind added trumped the UK’s capacity of 10 GW.

...
Today, China has over 80 policies in full force, intended to streamline different areas of the energy market. They address and support issues like clean energy capacity development, sustainable urban planning, technology innovation, green transport and air pollution. China also introduced guidelines to ease power purchase management and launched a Green Development Fund to directly invest in environmental protection, pollution control and ecological restoration projects. The fund will also support the development of green industries, promote green technology R&D and a carbon-free transformation of the economy.

Manufacturing and Capacity Support

China’s vital role in the renewable energy success story is also thanks to its prominent role in manufacturing. From solar panels to electric vehicles (EVs), the capacity to manufacture on such an enormous scale has been a pillar for its success.

Today, China owns nine out of the thirteen biggest solar module manufacturing companies globally. Meanwhile, it takes seven out of the top ten spots for wind turbine manufacturers. China’s EV market is also nothing to baulk at, and it already has the globe’s largest EV market. In the coming years, this EV dominance is expected to grow and be larger than Germany, the US, Japan, France and South Korea combined.

China Unveils its First Long-Term Hydrogen Plan
March 28, 2022

On March 23, the Chinese government released the country’s first-ever long-term plan for hydrogen, covering the period of 2021–2035. The plan laid out a phased approach to developing a domestic hydrogen industry and mastering technologies and manufacturing capabilities, while pointing to the country’s carbon peaking and neutrality commitments as an overarching driver.

The long-term plan builds on hydrogen-related visions and plans in several recent documents, including the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025), where hydrogen is identified as a “frontier” area and one of the six industries for focused advancement. China is increasingly cultivating the production and consumption of lower-emission hydrogen to help meet energy needs while also decarbonizing its economy.

China’s push for clean hydrogen is an important step in the country’s stride toward its climate goals. China is the largest producer of hydrogen today, at about 33 million tons (Mt), where most of the volume is produced from fossil fuels as feedstocks in refineries or chemical facilities. The China Hydrogen Alliance has suggested that China’s hydrogen demand would reach 35 Mt in 2030 (at least 5 percent of the Chinese energy supply) and 60 Mt in 2050 (10 percent). Meanwhile, according to the latest government plan, China would produce 100,000 to 200,000 tons of renewable-based hydrogen annually and have a fleet of 50,000 hydrogen-fueled vehicles by 2025. Today, China is already the third-largest fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) market and the first for fuel cell trucks and buses in the world. Using low-carbon sources to produce hydrogen and using clean hydrogen in various industrial sectors would help mitigate China’s carbon emissions. For example, the Chinese government estimates that its 2025 target for renewable-based hydrogen could reduce the country’s carbon emissions by one to two million tons annually.

China builds up world’s largest ultra-low emission thermal power plant cluster
Aug 23, 2022

China has built up the largest ultra-low emission thermal power plant cluster globally thanks to the efforts and investments made in environmental technologies and policies, with related technologies leading the way globally, the country's environment authority said on Tuesday.

China's ultra-low emission thermal power plants and large-scale waste incineration facilities are global leaders in cutting edge technology. The country's ultra-low emission thermal power plants have become the world's largest such cluster, Zhou Shoumin, director at the Department of Science, Technology, and Finance under China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE), said at the ministry's monthly press conference on Tuesday.
...
By the end of 2021, China had about 1.03 billion kW of coal-fired power units that had achieved ultra-low emission status, accounting for 93 percent of the country's total installed coal power capacity, according to the China Electricity Council in July.
...
In 2021, the operational income of the environmental protection industry reached about 2.18 trillion yuan ($318 billion), he said.

China has announced that it will strive to reach peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. In the latest efforts, this month, nine ministries and national departments jointly published a plan on scientifically and technologically supporting the country's dual carbon goals.

Hi CB,

All wishful thinking at best.

Watch the video by Professor Simon Michaux.

As the professor makes clear, there are insufficient minerals to build out even the first iteration of solar panels, wind mills, batteries and hydrogen fuel cells at global scale.

From a human perspective, the operative behavior is denial. As in denial that there are real limits in a physical world and physical universe.

@ThouArtThat
in 2013 had been overly pessimistic about peak gas, coal, uranium and other energy sources. None of his predictions came true by 2022. This is because he doesn't take into consideration trans-formative breakthroughs such as carbon sequestration, newly engineered nuclear energy plants, nuclear hydrogen production, massive reforestation in India and China, innovative improvements in waste management and recycling, more efficient batteries and fuel cells, combined heat and power plants, more efficient power line transmission using ultra high voltage DC current utilizing aluminum cables, etc, etc. BTW, all of his dire predictions were based on linear projections of the status quo.

Two centuries of rapid global population growth will come to an end

The world doesn't have a shortage of food if waste and inequality were eliminated.

Worldwide food waste

Key Findings

  • Roughly one-third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year - approximately 1.3 billion tonnes - gets lost or wasted.
  • Food losses and waste amount to roughly US$ 680 billion in industrialized countries and US$ 310 billion in developing countries.
  • Industrialized and developing countries dissipate roughly the same quantities of food - respectively 670 and 630 million tonnes.
  • Fruits and vegetables, plus roots and tubers have the highest wastage rates of any food.
  • Global quantitative food waste per year is roughly 30 per cent for cereals, 40-50 per cent for root crops, fruits, and vegetables, 20 per cent for oilseeds, meat and dairy plus 30 per cent for fish.
  • Every year, consumers in rich countries waste almost as much food (222 million tonnes) as the entire net food production of sub-Saharan Africa (230 million tonnes).
  • The amount of food wasted every year is equivalent to more than half of the world's annual cereals crop (2.3 billion tonnes in 2009/2010).
  • Per capita waste by consumers is between 95-115 kg a year in Europe and North America, while consumers in sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeastern Asia, each throw away only 6-11 kg a year.
  • Total per capita food production for human consumption is about 900 kg a year in rich countries, almost twice the 460 kg a year produced in the poorest regions.
  • In developing countries, 40 per cent of losses occur at post-harvest and processing levels while in industrialized countries more than 40 per cent of losses happen at retail and consumer levels.
  • At the retail level, large quantities of food are wasted due to quality standards that over-emphasize appearance.
  • Food loss and waste also amount to a major squandering of resources, including water, land, energy, labor, and capital, and needlessly produce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to global warming and climate change.
  • Even if just one-fourth of the food currently lost or wasted globally could be saved, it would be enough to feed 870 million hungry people in the world.
  • In developing countries, food waste occurs mainly at the early stages of the food value chain and can be traced back to financial, managerial and technical constraints in harvesting techniques as well as storage and cooling facilities. Strengthening the supply chain through the direct support of farmers and investments in infrastructure, transportation, as well as in an expansion of the food and packaging industry could help to reduce the amount of food loss and waste.
  • In medium and high-income countries, food is wasted and lost mainly at later stages in the supply chain. Differing from the situation in developing countries, the behavior of consumers plays a huge part in industrialized countries. The study identified a lack of coordination between actors in the supply chain as a contributing factor. Farmer-buyer agreements can be helpful to increase the level of coordination. Additionally, raising awareness among industries, retailers, and consumers as well as finding beneficial use for food that is presently thrown away are useful measures to decrease the amount of losses and waste.

He must be hyped up on his drugs to get through this teleprompter speech where he calls out the MAGA republicans. He berates Trump for his handling of the Rona epidemic and blames him for the hundreds no millions of deaths even though more people died during Biden’s watch than Trump’s. Plus he takes credit for the jobs created after Trump shutdown the country and people were sent home…it’s just incredible that he got more than 10 people to listen to his speech.

Hey remember when democrats gave Trump crap for his golf trips? Biden has spent more time on vacation in 18 months than Trump did in 4 years. And I’ll say it again that Biden has deported more immigrants in such a short time than Trump did in 4 years. And he’s holding just as many kids in immigration camps that shitlibs rode Trump’s buttocks for, but they are saying nothing about it. One guy on TOP who covers immigration had tons of comments in his diaries, but now that he’s calling out Biden’s sins no one comments in them. Too busy at brunch I guess.
