Saturday Open Thread 5/17/25: Odds and ends

Good morning, good people! I hope you have a great weekend planned, or that something completely spontaneous makes it wonderful!

James Comey had no idea what 86 meant, much less 86 47 meant. He just thought those shells in the beach sand were just an act of nature worthy of posting on social media. Seriously.

I want to turn the topic to something, well, shitty. Bear with me. I have questions about Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and want to know if it is something going on in your neck of the woods.

I know, or know of 4 folks who are in constant distress with this. It came upon all of them about a year ago. 1 is a female in her 30s, 1 is a female in her 40s, 1 is a male in his 60s, another is a male in his 70s.

None live in the same town. None follow the same diets. None buy groceries at the same stores. None drink from the same water supply. None work in the same industry, if they work at all. And yet, the symptoms for all of them is virtually identical: stomach pain, diarrhea, red blood emission, and the emission of a heavy oil. All spend up to an hour on the commode at any given time, all plan every activity with quick access to a bathroom. It is their way of life for a year, more or less. The 2 women wear Depends occasionally because, women, ya know.

No gastroenterologist has found anything serious in any of them.

Is this just the Texas skies? Anyway, I am curious if any of you have heard of family or friends with IBS, or read anything that discusses it as some public health problem.

Well, I told you it was shitty. As I said when I was 3, "I sawwy Lawd"

To make up for it, I will attempt to post photos from a trip I made in 2017. Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania. Vlad the Impaler's Castle. Fun trip!

Ok, folks, this is an open thread, open to all topics of interest to you that you wish to share with the rest of us. We all like news, we all like music!

Go for it, friends!

Sounds like your friends have a gut microbiome imbalance. I would recommend William Davis' book Super Gut.

I learned from Alex Christoforou, 86 refers to taking someone 8 miles from town and putting them 6 feet deep. I must admit to being as ignorant as Comey claims he is about the term.

Hope everyone has a great weekend. Thanks for the OT!

“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

@Lookout I will pass along your suggestion to the sickly folks. It just seems to me that there is something strange going on with food, water, air, whatever, and that there is a commonality I can't put my finger on.
Remember when drs. would just tell you to drink buttermilk? And that it worked?
And on another subject, did you react well to RFK, Jr.'s assessment of Palestinians?
"The Palestinian people are the most pampered people in the history of the world."
I immediately began to despise him. Was that an ok reaction? It's all I got.
Well, nature is not disappointing me. Last evening, 5 of the Magnificent Seven came by for a snack. Earlier in the week, I saw one wandering in the back acres alone, looking for a place to give birth to her fawn.
Here's hoping you have a nice trip to Trade's Day, and can take a break from mowing and landscaping the Holler, dear friend!

Presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung arrives with security detail to take a front row seat, at the Gwangju commemoration celebrations in the street. I think the timing of 5.18 and the election schedule is fortuitous for Lee and the democracy movement. The democratic leadership from the National Assembly is all there, including the Speaker of the National Assembly and Chu Mi-ae. I saw some right wing short this am, criticizing Lee because a few hundred thousand dollars were appropriated for his armored limo. Rashid is a good journalist he's right on top of events.

One of the songs performed on the thread March for the Beloved was written as a commemoration of those who were massacred by the ROK Army in May 1980 on the orders of dictator Chun Doo-wan.

Gwangju Uprising

I didn't know what that numerical code meant. I've noticed a similar usage of the verb to kill in Korean. Another meaning is to restrain, hold back, muffle, etc. in Korean particularly in reference to political actors (like Lee). Literally you could say it was the Chief Justice's plan to kill Lee Jae-myung (with respect to his political career). That usage has always confused me, because references to serious violence are usually censored in South Korean media. References to violence are redacted in media, and images of knives, guns, blood on an injured person are also blurred out. Lee has reportedly received death threats, so his security detail is quite large. Someone believed to belong to a religious cult tried to kill him at a public event in January 2024.

Attempted assassination of Lee Jae-myung

Thanks for odds & ends OTC. The bubble in housing prices is really having an impact here. I expect the number of homeless to increase greatly. On weekdays the parking for the thrift store nearby is always full. The overflow parking extends into the street. I heard a report that a household with an average income only had 20 percent of the housing market available to shop. The weather is oppressively hot, making me reluctant to work at the house, outside and in the garage. Except for basic tools, I wonder if it's worth it to save all that junk.

@soryang I never knew 86 was a code, but then, like you, Lookout, et. al, we aren't really the cool guys.
I wish for SK the realization of democracy as I have fervently wished for it here since 1963.
I read a blurb this morning that Trump cut a deal to displace 1 million Palestinians to Libya. I am not surprised, since we have that Trail of Tears ethos. They will sell on the slave market as soon as they get healthy. Follow the money.
Moving is traumatic, and one good reason is trying to decide what to take, what to toss. I had a spinet piano in my Houston apartment back in the 70s. During a mass lay off when nobody could find a job, I traded the piano for the work of the movers. I felt I had traded a piece of my heart.
Best of luck selling your home and moving to a safer environ.
As always, thanks for dropping in and enjoy your weekend, friend!

quick, but maybe more later.

First, everybody knows what 86 means and has meant for at least since the fifties - you 86 somebody from a bar or other venue, which is, to throw them out, evict or eject them. It does not mean to snuff, though it may be possible that it means that in colonial or wild west times.

IBS - There is something known as IBD, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, which comes in two flavors, Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis. OK - 1) Inflammatory, market by the presense and persistence of inflammation 2) Disease, they are known, identifiable diseases, they can be tested for, there are markers, and treatment protocols of various types and efficacies exist, including, as a last resort, certain surgeries. It is an auto-immune disease. I have and have had UC for ages and took tons or prednisone and other stuff until lately they put me on a biological - a mococlonal antibody - selected for my case based on various known genetic stuff, certain markers and whatever, that keeps it largely under control and requires regular infusion sessions and is worth it. Because I have cadillac medical coverage, I can afford it, otherwise ...

OK, compare to Irritable Bowel Syndrome. First, irritable, inflammation may or may not be present to some degree now and then, but isn't really part of the issue. Most importantly SYNDROME - not a disease, they don't know what the hell it is, there are no tests or markers, there are no known treatment protocols, it is, quite literally, mystery shit. Nobody knows what causes it, but it involves the gut so likely culprits are a) gut biome, b) vagus nerve issues, c) mental or neurological issues, d) chronic toxic/allergic environment. Whatever triggers it in person 1 may not be a factor for person 2, 3 or 4, etc. In essence, the information is that there is none. We had a neighbor who had a serious case of IBS and we felt very sorry for her, precisely because no known treatment protocols, not even prednisone.

Now, my week to cook starts mañana, so I must be off to farmers' market, and muy pronto too, we're late.

be well and have a good one

@enhydra lutris You are unlucky to have your condition, but at least lucky that there is a diagnosis, and a treatment protocol that works. Not to mention, great insurance. Good for you, friend.
With IBS, I know 3 of the sufferers are trying to figure out what foods or drinks to avoid. The process of elimination is very tough. Eliminate dairy. That didn't work. Is it eggs? Nope. How about caffeine? Nope. And on and on the experiment goes. Drs are of no help at all.
Thing is, if it was aluminum or plastics or food dyes or Round Up in the air and food, what local doc is going to go up against the corporate mob? They would be insane to do so.
It will be interesting to see Comey explain how the shells were just so damn cute he made them go viral. Btw, I have also heard 86 is a military code.
If I ever start feeling sorry for myself, I will remember you all.
Sharpen those kitchen knives and raise some dough, dear friend! Enjoy this and every day to come!

Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comic strip. A hippie-era wild party setting was turned into a board game. One of the ways one could lose the game was to be 86’ed = in this context, kicked out of the party venue and not allowed to return.

@TheOtherMaven @TheOtherMaven it was a code used by the mob and has been around for decades. But Comey and the FBI know nothing about the mafia, of course. They focus on...er...rooting out communists?

The message echoes from Gaza back to the US. “Starving people is fine.”

@snoopydawg How dare any country other than Israel buy a favorable policy?! It is ironic that Israel's money comes from we US taxpayers, but that is another story.
Halper is doing a great job exposing AIPAC's overwhelming influence, or is control a better term?
Israel is carrying out a military campaign right now to kill every Palestinian in Gaza. Right now.
The western world is worrying about credit ratings and figuring out how to break up Russia into tiny bits and pieces. And how to use Taiwan as a proxy war against China, of course.
We suck.
I hope you have plans to get my client away from the looming fireworks explosions. I am being tasked with planning a trip to Big Bend National Park in the fall. How many days will it take to explore a million square acres? Quite a challenge! Avoiding getting bitten by a diamond back rattler is another. Sigh...with travel, it's always something...
Enjoy your weekend, chica!

that Trump has given Netanyahu the green light to destroy what’s left of Gaza. The debate is whether Israel runs our foreign policy or does it do our bidding?

Remember it was Truman who gave consent for Israel to invade Palestine and make it their own country. And Roosevelt acknowledged that the plan was for no Palestinians to be living in their own country. I think AIPAC’s job is to keep American politicians in line with the goals of Israel that have western backing. It’s why those countries support and arm Israel. My two cents.

No plans yet for the 4th. Still thinking…Libras stink at making decisions.

In honor of gjohnsit it looks like Trump and family are leaving Hillary’s and Biden’s pay for play in the dust. Most corrupt president in history. He’s dismantling any regulatory agency that can rein in his corruption.

@snoopydawg I am usually very suspicious of a NYT reporter, but this guy does have insider info with the Trump family.
I appreciate his restraint in saying corruption and quid pro quo is for courts to decide, even if everything the Trump family is doing in the ME has every appearance of being corrupt.
In honor of fire with fire, I am dropping in this 16 minute Jimmy Dore video that discusses with amazement a few things Trump got right, in all fairness to Trump and the stopped clock theory.

As usual Trump is all talk no action. There’s a gazzilion trucks full of supplies just outside the gates and he can order Netanyahu to open them and feed the people. He just doesn’t want to. He’d rather export them to Libya. Maybe they can be sold as slaves.

@humphrey Been prowlin' around X today?
I am to the point where I wish I could live in a country that did not support genocide. Spain maybe?
I would have never thought of them as the leader of the anti-genocide crusade
I read this week that Hamas fighters have grown to 40k in numbers. Israel ain't winning on any front except their battle to slaughter women and children. Oh, and health care workers, and journalists, and first responders. While they don't murder Christians that often, they have no issue with the Syrian military doing it in Syria on a wide scale. That will keep Christians from fleeing to the Israeli part of Syria, amirite? Must stay pure.
Enjoy your weekend and keep us x posted, friend!

‘The Chariots of Genocide are warming their engines’

Gideon Levy

Operation Gideon's Chariots has yet to begin, and the chariots of genocide are already warming their engines. How will we call this massacre, so indiscriminate and pointless, even before the big operation has begun? 23 killed in the bombing of a hospital – one of the most serious war crimes – just to try and kill Mohammed Sinwar, the latest devil, with nine bunker buster bombs – everything to provide Yedioth Ahronoth in their lust for the main headline: "In his brother's footsteps". The readers loved it, Israelis loved it, no one came out against it … Is there anything left we can do in Gaza that will be seen in Israel as morally and legally unacceptable? 100 dead children? A thousand women for Sinwar the brother? It was necessary to eliminate him, they explained, because he was an "obstacle to a hostage deal." We've even lost our shame. The sole obstacle to a hostage deal sits in Jerusalem, his name is Benjamin Netanyahu, along with his fascist partners, and no one can even conceive that it's legitimate to harm them to remove the obstacle. What happened on Wednesday in Gaza is just a promo for what will occur in the coming months, if no one stops Israel.

More snippets at link.

Witkoff now promises that if Hamas releases 10 more Israeli PoWs that he will try harder to get supplies into Gaza. Yoda would say, do not try.

I don’t understand why Hamas keeps playing the game of negotiation since Israel and America never uphold their end of the deal.

Israel is flooded with evil and lack of empathy. “I never knew people were capable of being so evil”

I have never seen so much evil; so many people eager to express wickedness; competing with each other in demonstrating their closeness and lack of empathy. I never knew people were capable of being so evil. To rejoice in the pain of others. To rejoice when people suffer, starve, die, lose everything they have and die. That is why I have never been so afraid. The feeling is that a mighty dam has been breached and masses of Israelis are removing all restraints of humanity from themselves and racing to wallow together in toxic hatred, joy in the ego, dehumanization, and violence. As if they were just waiting for the moment when they could free themselves from the rules of etiquette that obliged them to maintain a semblance of morality. With shouts of age, they are shedding the conventions and norms that human society has been building for thousands of years to curb the rampage of the ego. They are giving freedom a new meaning: freedom from the shackles of culture. Equality has been erased from their lexicon, not to mention human dignity. Compassion, empathy, loving your neighbor as yourself — have been abolished … The new Israeli togetherness is based on an addiction to hatred and bloodlust ……

There are some good souls in Israel calling out the horror that Israel has become, but as the polls show they are in the 3% of Israelis who don’t support what Israel is doing to Palestinians.

45% of Americans support Israel and refuses to see that it’s committing genocide. I think there is 100% of our government that have no empathy for what Palestinians are experiencing.
