Thanks for the music!

Hope all is still going swimmingly. Are you doing any swimming? Wish I had a pool today.

this has not been a swimming vacation, more of a wading one. i have gotten my feet wet in a couple of rivers as we've been walking around. but, yes, things are going swimmingly regardless of the depth of water. Smile

shortly, i'm going out to dinner at donner pass. hmmmm.

there are some beautiful lakes here and nearby (tahoe is pretty close) but it's kind of chilly (in the 50's) right now.

i hope that you all are having a great time.

This is not for everyone I suppose. Long, at 17 minutes. But, I've kind of fallen in love with these two guys since getting to know them (virtually). IIRC, Glenn was on vacation in Rio and met David on the beach.

David is running for Rio City Council (cool), and here Glenn talks about him and introduces him to potential supporters. And, at the 12 minute mark he announces they are in the process of adopting a baby!!

A scoop for the The Evening Blues!! Smile

man, Greenwald is such a boss, especially compared to most of the American journalistic establishment, most of whom can barely use one language effectively, much less two. Greenwald makes all the right people uncomfortable and angry. I hope his husband wins.

Exposed: Pesticide Industry Deployed Aggressive Lobby Effort to Quash Bee Protections

Despite the abundance of scientific studies documenting the rapid and dangerous decline of pollinator populations, state and federal lawmakers have yet to pass any meaningful protections for bees.

The reason, according to the findings of a new investigation, is that pesticide giants such as Bayer, Monsanto, and Syngenta have deployed an aggressive lobbying campaign to dilute and suppress attempts to regulate their multi-billion dollar industry—with great success.

Published by environmental watchdog Friends of the Earth, the report (pdf) exposes "how the pesticide industry has weakened and delayed pesticide reforms and is shaping new pollinator 'protection' plans nationwide that do little to protect bees, but a lot to protect industry profits."

The agrochemical industry has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on state and federal lobbying efforts, which the report says have effectively pushed lawmakers to pass so-called "pollinator protection plans" that "lack metrics to measure effectiveness, improvement, or failure" and often "provide more protections for pesticides and pesticide users than for bee keepers and bee colonies."

What's more, the ever-present "revolving door" between the public and private sector has allowed the pesticide industry to "infiltrate" regulatory agencies. "In hundreds of documented cases, employees of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Environmental Protection Agency have shuffled between regulatory agencies and companies including Bayer, Syngenta and Monsanto," the study notes.

The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself. - Friedrich Nietzsche -

i've been seeing far fewer pollinators (bees, butterflies) in my travels than i used to and they're pretty scarce at home as well.

on the other hand, the rocks seem to be faring well. Smile

Coffee, for Your Health

New guidelines from the World Health Organization say drinking coffee may prevent cancer, and represent the latest in a long debate over the harms and benefits of a beloved beverage.

You Want Tastier Coffee? Freeze Beans, Then Grind.

Percolator, French press, AeroPress, espresso, pour over, vacuum pot, automatic brew, tin can: People go to great lengths for a good cup of coffee. (A friend of mine filters his cold brew with pantyhose.) But to achieve consistent flavor you may just need to chill your beans before grinding them. Colder beans produce smaller, more consistently sized particles when ground, yielding more flavor from less coffee, according to a study published in Scientific Reports.

In busy cafes, temperature matters. As room temperatures vary and grinders heat up with use, the consistency of the resulting grind changes. That’s a problem, because water extracts flavor from smaller coffee grounds faster than bigger ones. An inconsistent grind means sour taste from the small grains, and a bitter one from the big, all at the same time. For a more flavor-driven, sour and sweet cup, baristas adjust grinder settings for finer particles throughout the day.

But Colonna and Smalls, a specialty coffee shop in Britain, used science instead. They got together with chemists at nearby University of Bath to see how temperature affected how coffee beans break. They started at room temperature and went down to that of liquid nitrogen (-321 degrees Fahrenheit). It turned out, the colder the bean, the more uniform particles it produced, and the more even the flavor.

A monastery/university was getting too big so the government wants its size and population halved.

China orders demolition of half of world’s largest Tibetan Buddhist institute
The Chinese government has demanded the removal of more than 5,000 monks and nuns from Larung Gar Buddhist Academy, and plans to demolish 50 percent of residences at the historic monastery.

The school is the largest Tibetan Buddhist institute in the world, situated in the remote Gharze Prefecture of China’s ‪Sichuan‬ Province. There are currently over 10,000 residents at the monastery, and the government’s order demands the population be reduced to 5,000. The monastery has been given a deadline of September 30, 2017 to reduce the population — demands that come as part of a strict crackdown on religious freedom in Tibet.

It's quite a striking area. Nice collection of images at the Daily Mail.

Cheating Donald. I don't blame him to push back being categorized as "Trump backer".

Donald Trump brags about “branding” his political opponents. He repeatedly has called Marco Rubio “Little Marco,” Ted Cruz “Lyin’ Ted,” and Hillary Clinton, “Crooked Hillary.” Repetition makes these epithets stick – a lesson Trump has drawn from the advertising world and his own fragile ego.

Astonishingly, his opponents have not successfully branded him – choosing instead to first ignore and then argue with Trump, who is a chronic overtalker, shouter and prevaricator. The mass media, delighted with its ratings, has until recently rarely chosen to challenge his false assertions, preferring instead to let him perpetuate his mendacities.

There are exceptions – two of the leading ones being Glenn Kessler, the Washington Post Fact Checker who has handed Trump a record 28 Four-Pinocchio awards and David Cay Johnston, a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter who has written, “Twenty One Questions for Donald Trump.”

Based on these and other solid published sources, the new moniker or nickname for Trump should be “CHEATING DONALD.
