Do You Hear What I Hear?

Do you hear what I hear, as 300 million Americans prepare to celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace by maxing out their credit cards to buy each other meaningless crap, otherwise known as Christmas gifts? I hear the lies of corporate politicians and the propaganda of the media and the marching boots of the militarized police. I hear the sonic weapons that shattered the night at Standing Rock, I hear every door to a better future being slammed shut, I hear the coming of a totalitarian nightmare and the silent scream of democracy dying.

IMG_2853

That’s what I hear.

I hear the storm winds of mainstreamed madness blowing, I hear the whining of finger-pointers on the airwaves of MSNBC, I hear the greed machine of the oligarchs rumbling into overdrive and the warmongering of the corrupt ruling class echoing through the corridors of power, I hear the cold wind of karma blowing across this land of dead end roads, empty streets, and bridges to nowhere.

Do you see what I see? I see an entire political party locked in the back seat of the DNCmobile, I see the driver barreling through the night with no headlights on, still roaring down the Triangulation Turnpike at ninety-outrages-an hour, with the Democratic Establishment's Greatest Hits blaring on the radio and the windshield splattered with the blood of everyone who got in their way.

Bernie Sanders tells us it’s not completely dark. That’s true. We can still see each other now and then in the glare of the flashing dashboard warning lights.

Did I mention the dead bodies in the trunk?

I’d better mention that.

There are dead bodies in the trunk.

Dead bodies of Muslim children, Predator-droned into eternity to keep us all safe during this holiday season of peace on earth, good will towards men, to keep us all safe from terrorists financed by the CIA, to win the hearts and minds of "moderate" Muslims who still don’t understand that Obama had no choice but to blow their children up, it demonstrated his resolve.

I see the whole Convoy of American Idiocy, I see it bound for Hell with the hammer down. The limousines of the oligarchs. The Humvees of the generals. The Cadillac Escalades of the corporate media. The spy vans of the NSA. The reeking garbage trucks of Congress. The rattling pickup trucks of the unemployed. And last of all, bringing up the rear, the Halfwits for Hillary of Daily Kos, huffing and puffing on their one-speed bikes, peddling as fast as they can, trying to keep up.

That’s what I see.

Do you know what I know?

Of course you do. You know, I know, we all know that abuse of power is pervasive, that the moneychangers control entire governments, that deceit is on a rampage, that the halls of justice are dark and empty, that tens of millions of people have no job, that hundreds of millions of children are hungry.

Christmas Eve 2016 will not be a silent night, it will not be a holy night. Oppression is not silent and depravity is not holy.

Chris Hedges . . .

The powerful protect their own, they divide the world into the damned and the blessed, the patriots and the enemy, the privileged and the weak. They insist that extinguishing lives in foreign wars, and in our prison complexes, is a form of human progress. They cannot see that the suffering of a child in Kandahar, or a child in the blighted urban pocket of our nation’s capital, diminishes and impoverishes us all. They are deaf, dumb and blind.

All is not calm, all is not bright, there is no calm, there is no light. Evil is on the march, westward leading, still proceeding, onward down the roads of night. The world does not in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing, it waits in the darkness, in fear of what’s coming next.

Chris Hedges . . .

Defenseless under the night, our world in stupor lies, yet dotted everywhere, ironic points of light flash out, wherever the just exchange their messages. May I, composed like them of eros and of dust, beleaguered by the same negation and despair, show an affirming flame.

Composed of eros and dust, beleaguered by negation and despair, we exchange our messages here, while politicians exchange messages with bankers, issue decrees of austerity, and expect silent obedience. But there will be no silence from now on, there will be no obedience to criminals or their messengers. A song of Justice will be raised on High, the words of that anthem will be sung in the valleys of the oppressed, affirming voices will join in and raise it higher, until the mountaintops ring with it, until the whole world will hears it.

I’m just a shepherd boy, but I know a Star of Peace shines above us. It’s hard to see, but it’s there. I know that someday, enough people will finally see it, and we’ll hear a Song of Peace and Justice ringing through the night, we’ll see the oppressed people of this awakening world throw the moneychangers out of the temple, we’ll hear them proclaim the birth of a new age, an age of peace, an age of goodness and light.

Bring that day closer.

Speak truth to power.

With a voice as big as the sea . . .

We are serfs, we are ruled, we have no say.
But then we could if we wanted.
That's the perplexing thing isn't it.
This Trump administration has me thinking we're going to another level in this video game.

has always been based on conquest, on that mentality of kill the natives and take their land. Y'all heard of Johnny Appleseed? I'm sure he was a good guy, but he was mostly valued because, as apples are sweet, liquor can be made from them. It takes a lot of booze to shake off that conquest mentality. From the Wikipedia page:

One notable account is from the first chapter of The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World by Michael Pollan.[34] Pollan states that since Johnny Appleseed was against grafting, his apples were not of an edible variety and could be used only for cider: "Really, what Johnny Appleseed was doing and the reason he was welcome in every cabin in Ohio and Indiana was he was bringing the gift of alcohol to the frontier.

Neil Young's "Pocahontas" reflects upon that time from a perspective within the industrialized 20th century. Here's a good version by Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings:

But you know if you want pure Americana at its most depressing, you should start with a guy who should need no introduction, Townes van Zandt. A couple of days ago someone posted this video on YouTube, of a concert recorded about a year before his death:

The big figure of late 20th-century American philosophy, Richard Rorty, used to suggest that literature was better than philosophy, except of course for that literature which reflected perspectives he wanted to criticize, such as Leslie Marmon Silko's "Almanac of the Dead." So that might also be a good place to start.

Of course there's also this hit movie now in the theaters in which nice characters you barely got to know are blown to smithereens by the dozens but which has one message: "rebellions are built on hope." Of course, only in America would this message also be the topic of this piece of insane propaganda, in which "rebellion" is mere PR for the empire.

What's the way out? My vote is that we take all of the old categories of rebellion and keep them alive in the public sphere while remembering at the same time that rebellion has to be a phenomenon measured not by paid-off or delusional damned fool propagandists or isolated sectarians with loud voices but by our best hard scientists. We need a physics of rebellion and a revolt of nature.

Townes could barely carry a tune when "singing" Pancho & Lefty. Here's the last Townes concert ever:

And then you have the harrowing story of his death:

Your essays always hit the spot Rusty, thanks for the timely passion and vision.

Great comments and sources/links Cass, thanks. So hard to get people to question our imperialism in all shapes and forms, when we've been inculcated by the propaganda of American Exceptionalism that begins the moment we're told as kindergarteners to "place your right hand over your heart and repeat after me: I Pledge Allegiance..." Asking adults to question their fealty to and to dissent from The Greatest Country in The World(TM) becomes the bane of our progressive (or whatever we're calling it these days) existence. It's the same propaganda game used to divide and conquer Red vs Blue.

A neighbor gave me a bunch of Townes stuff, and though I haven't gotten fully gotten into it now have a little more incentive to do so after this conversation (thanks for the Dylan story, Bis).

Good stuff, fellas, good stuff.

Neil Young is singularly one of the my top 3 all-time musical heroes (cool cover by Gillian Welch). Find myself listening to him, strangely by far, more than anyone else in my 2k cd/hundreds of albums/26k iPod music collection. And he just keeps growing in stature to me, both musically, politically and socially, especially in his willingness to take stands and publicly and musically express himself in the person of the universality and socialistic nature of the people. His latest tour is another example of his great fearless convictions and musical ferocity, with Willie Nelson's kids in his backup band. What a bad-ass he continues to be.

Was thumbing through Shakey again recently and came upon a passage referring to his performance at the Bottom Line in 1974 as being a rare bootleg (one can find anything now on YouTube, which blows my mind entirely, after having become so accustomed to for a large part of my life the intense and fun pursuit of buying bootlegs any and everywhere I've traveled) of a particularly unique show in which he just showed up at the end of a Leon Redbone/Ry Cooder show and asked to do a surprise set, which contains a never-released, dark tune he opened with called "Pushed It Over The End."

First, I agree with a statement attributed to Gandhi, in which he allegedly declared “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” Too many prove the validity of this observation daily.

Secondly, I agree with the Fundies that Jesus is the reason for their season. The commercialization of this religious holiday should be condemned by every religious leader whose belief system is one focus of the Xtian Religious Ellipse.

There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don't know we don't know.

We will continue to hear truth, see reality, and know our power despite their lies, blinders, and oppression. We'll dance to our drumbeat of Peace while raising our voices against the drumbeat of war.

Thank you for creating beautiful rhythms, Rusty.

Very well done! I, like you, know that all is not finished. You express the despairing depths of our time so poignantly. But the great evolutionary process continues. I do not know if we humanoids here on Earth will make it. But if not, there are other life forms in other galaxies. The ongoing drive for life, expansion, fulfillment, and growth continues. It is sad to think that our species might end, but the impetus is unending.

You really liked my poem from Docudharma days. I whole heartedly send great appreciation for your work here. I'm glad I found this. I don't spend much time on line anymore -- too tired and lazy, and so sick of the same old, same old.

Yet I love your writing here, and send all best wishes for more!

I'll end with a quote from Doris Lessing, her dedication to the 1st volume of her 5 part novel, "Canopus in Argos Archives":

"For my Father, who used to sit night after night, hour after hour,
on our porch in Africa, watching the stars. 'Well,' he said, 'if we
blow ourselves up, there's plenty more where we came from!' "

Best wishes!
