Disability Caucus Open Thread 11/12/2016: Visiting with My Mom

Let me just get this out of the way right now: My mother and her boyfriend voted for the greasy slum lord. I guess I shouldn't be surprised considering there were hints this would happen before I left Facebook for good (My brother also supported Trump, but couldn't vote). Of course they both ridiculed my support and my vote for Jill Stein by saying 'Hey, good choice, but the wrong choice'. The b/f had also said he agreed there needs to be more parties but a couple months ago he said that I needed to get on the right ship and the democratic one ain't it. Way to treat politics like a football game, bud. He also said jobs would open up once all those illegals are deported (Yeah, that's not how it works in IT or other knowledge work).

This was during a surprise visit today. We were talking over lunch and one of the topics was my disability case because I was asking my mom about school records and mentioned I also had to give 15 years worth of work history, right down to the first job I had busing tables. I said, albeit jokingly that the manager would have fired me had I not quit and she said 'That's why I got promoted. He knew I needed help and that you were trying but it wasn't going well. Nobody said anything because they didn't want to hurt your feelings.' I simply replied that I was sure people were relieved after I left and explained to her that this is why I won't go out for most jobs anymore. The physical aspects of my disabilities make keeping a job nearly impossible.

That's pretty much how it went with every job I had until I went to college in my early 20s. Hell, I got fired from a fast food job after just 3 and a half weeks, and for the same reason. It's just too bad my mom and her b/f supported a candidate whose party goes out of their way to make life Hell for the downtrodden. Of course, there were no good choices in this election when it came to the main candidates, and we'd have all suffered for it either way. There would still be protests in the streets even if Clinton had won as intended.

Be that as it may, I can't help but feel disgusted at the fact that my mother of all people would support a candidate like Trump. It hurts like Hell. And any attempt to inform her or her contractor b/f as to why is met with more ignorance or ridicule. That doesn't mean I care for them any less. Nor does it mean I won't keep trying to reach them. They agree with Medicare for All, so that's something.

See ya around,

Aspie

The only difference is that her "boyfriend" is my dad. They are back together after 45 years being divorced! And we are spending Thanksgiving with them. And my father was on Sarah Palin's campaign team, for Governor.

We spent the weekend with them recently, during the Third Debate. That was fun, too.

Wish me luck (I love my parents...this will be challenging, though. Sounds like you've got the right attitude about it.)

They'll be busy on thanksgiving and I'll be with my wife and mother in law anyway. My wife and her parents are the only advocates I've ever had.

Modern education is little more than toeing the line for the capitalist pigs.

Guerrilla Liberalism won't liberate the US or the world from the iron fist of capital.

so I never had worries about religion. Did not enquire about political leanings enough to know. Now find out his family, like mine, were steady Democrats. Now scattered to the wind, but we all care about others who are less-fortunate, a Good Ideal. No discussion about Thanksgiving yet, 2 years ago we had TG dinner at his mother's house, a new family gathering. Last year I broke my elbow and had TG mac-and-cheese made by daughter.

I am glad you have had advocates.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

just don't get the full picture, like those who voted for Hillary because she was a woman.
