Album of the Week 7-20-24
Afternoon folks!
Anybody out there enjoy blues harmonica playing? If so, it's a good weekend, there's a nice french compilation double-disc set of Little Walter and an album of crusty 1940's recordings of Sonny Terry - some of them with Woodie Guthrie. After that we've got an album of r&b from The Chambers Brothers and a change of pace with Malo. If you (like most folks) have never heard of Malo, if you enjoy Santana, you'll probably dig Malo. After that, we've got some blues rock albums from Robin Trower and ZZ Top's second album. We finish up this week with a fairly obscure album from Traffic.

Malo !!!
I heard them first on a Putumayo collection I have, and put in a mixed CD for my parents. I still played it for my dad as he was declining in dementia and we would dance. Any latin music gave him a lift, and Malo is definitely uplifting.

That image is one of I think maybe a couple dozen that are very common and famous in Mexico. One can often see one or more in Mexican restaurants of the hole-in-the-wall sort (where you might find me) around LA, or San Antonio. The whole set tells the story of the Aztecs I think it is. Great images...Sometimes they are done as murals on walls, dare I say, hugely.

I can imagine the paintings big, in the tradition of murals in Mexico. In a hole-in-the-wall mexican food joint, where we'd find you, I imagine them adding a cosy and warm atmosphere.

heh, i am kind of surprised that anybody has heard of them. one of the tunes on the album was a minor radio hit in the u.s. and some of my friends recognize it when i play it for them, but can't identify the band or the name of the tune.

are Cafe or Suavecito.

Great records man! I still listened through Rio Grande Mud even the dang thing is sitting in the vinyl here! Just Got Paid and Francene were the only two songs played off it in LA. And just barely, until Tres Hombres broke huge. Then those two RGM songs got more airplay than they ever did before 'La Grange'.

heh, i don't remember rgm getting any airplay here except for on college stations. the few big stations (am and fm) didn't play it at all that i remember. tres hombres was different, they played the hell out of la grange, though rarely anything else.
