Ahh, spring!

open thread_98.jpg

With a promised five days of warm weather, we hightailed it up to the farm.
Been here since Friday and have worked on just about everything, beginning with collecting all the fallen trees and limbs and cutting into firewood and the slack into piles to burn.
Temps in the mid 70s.
Spent two days burning and have cooled the burn pile enough to mix the ashes into a pile of dirt and spread some grass seed on the scorched earth.
Fed the fruit trees with organic fertilizer.
Planted my last two Grand Fir trees along the creek, making it an even 70 trees total.
None the less, four more old growth trees have come down this winter, two of them falling across the creek.
Trying my best to keep trees and foliage over and along the creek to keep it a healthy habitat for salmon and trout.
Of course, more fish will draw the river otters, the creeks namesake.
Found a fresh deer carcass this morning a couple hundred feet away from our travel trailer (home away from home) but didn't hear a thing last night. Cougar tracks nearby.
We have an abundance of deer here, and a sizeable population of cougar and coyote.
Occasionally a bear or wolf come through.
Did some prep work on the garden and the raspberries and lettuce are sprouting.
We are both tired and ready to go back to town.
Will be home on Tuesday, so should be able to host an OT.
What's been going on in the civilized world?
P.S. Yesterday a pair of F-35s flew over really low, maybe 1000 ft. Never seen warcraft around here before. Bad omen.

and have walked many miles in the process of entertaining. Today begins recovery time, but the yard and garden need work because it is spring and because we seem to have another gopher. Gophers have invaded the neighborhood and eventually one reaches our yard whereupon we exterminate it, but it's a chore.

Sorry to hear about the deer and downed trees, but, that's life, as they say. Sorry about the warbirds too, there goes any semblance of quiet and quietude. The warjocks are getting restless again and it sounds like we've threatened Niger for saying that we should leave and let them govern and control their own country. Don't know about the Universal Soldier, but the US is certainly the Universal Asshole.

of gophers here but they stay way back from the garden as we keep the grass mowed really low.
They don't like open fields much as the flying predators hang in the trees and we have a feral black cat that patrols regularly.
Universal asshole...you got that right.
At some point going forward the Global Majority will declare us a terrorist country.
Maybe that will be what it takes to wake the people out of their stupor.
Have a great day.

last Thursday-Friday, to be followed temps in the mid-to-upper 60s all this week, and then freezing and snow again Sunday-Monday of next week. The snow is all gone already, except for the plow piles. And I'm starting to see the first buds on the trees, way too early.

There are at least 2 or 3 more good wet branch-stripping spring snows to come. If the deciduous trees leaf out this early, they'll take an even bigger beating than they did this last week while still bare. We lost many spruce and other evergreen trees in our neighborhood this last week- the snow loads toppled them right over, pulling up the root balls. A fully leafed-in deciduous tree would have stood no chance at all.

Oh, well- springtime in the Rockies. People have planted a lot of non-native species here, and in the coming weeks, I suspect that many will learn why those trees *don't* grow here naturally...

have buds and the nectarine has two pink flowers starting to bloom.
I have 12 dogwoods from Arbor Society in pots to nurture until healthy enough that I can plant them. I don't think they are native here, but I will find a place for them.
Don't send that snow shovel to the Russian military yet.
Sun is coming up, so I may have trouble connecting. Will be on the I-5 corridor soon
Have a great day.

Were most likely getting in their required training flight hours on the weekend. Why they were so low, I can't guess, maybe just messing around because weather so clear.

Will be happy to say goodbye to winter weather.

No regrets.

with flowering trees and bushes everywhere, and bluebonnets? We got 'em.
The pattern the past couple of weeks, and this week, too, is perfect weather days during the week, and the threat of rain and storms on the weekends. That keeps us from going out and playing. I do not want to plan any drives and outings in a thunderstorm.
Hope the planted trees take root, and fruit trees bear fruit.
Thanks for the OT.

Previous studies have linked time-restricted eating to improvements across several cardiometabolic health measures, such as blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol levels.

Now early research involved 20,000 adults found those who followed a time-restricted eating plan were 91 per cent more likely to die from cardiovascular disease.

The trendy dieting schedule did not reduce participants chances of death from any cause, according to the findings being presented at the American Heart Association’s Lifestyle Scientific Sessions 2024 conference this week.

Many who follow a time-restricted eating diet follow a 16:8 eating schedule, where they eat all their foods in an 8-hour window and fast for the remaining 16 hours each day.

They found this was associated with a greater risks of dying from cardiovascular disease when compared to people eating during 12- and 16-hour windows.

Those with existing heart disease or cancer were particularly at risk, they noted.

Sadly the rest is paywalled, but you get the drift from this section. I don’t know why this is being pushed and especially with all the increasing food challenged people in Biden’s economy.

ETA: The Daily Mall didn’t link to the study so I couldn’t look at the data. But I guess we should just trust whomever did it.

@snoopydawg
I've been following the time restricted eating for about 8 weeks with a 5 hour window (noon-5 o'clock).
Haven't lost much weight but have been having dizzy spells for the first time ever.
Bending over and moving my headroom one side to the other sends the world spinning.
Happened for a few hours last month then went away.
Happened again Sat. and every day since. Was gonna see my Dr. But maybe ditch this diet and see what happens.
Need to go see my Dr. for annual ck. up anyway, which was why I was trying to lose some weight.
She always chides me about it.
Thanks for the heads up.
Incidentally, they call it "intermittent fasting" out here.

the belief amongst the Owners is that this is the hard part. After all, if they can get people to restrict their eating to just 8 hours a day, and then an hour a day, then it'll be relatively easy to get them used to eating every other day, then only once a week, and so on.

There's a war on, you know. Sacrifices must be made. They have only our best interests at heart.

Faugh. Not a fan. Once again, I find myself glad that I'm old and child-free. I don't want to be around for what comes next.

@usefewersyllables Foods, timings, and all at once, it should be other foods, other timings.
One thing that works for weight loss is to take a bite, take your time to chew or swallow, take your time before you eat the next bite. You feel sated and full quickly, eat much less than if you wolf it all down in a rush.
The one constant is sugar and seed oils are bad. Always.
Good luck to everyone on weight loss, or weight maintenance, which ever diet you choose.
