8/28 Open Thread: This Column is for the Birds
Roger Tory Peterson was born on August 28, 1908 He was a naturalist, ornithologist, author, artist, and educator. Some consider him to be one of inspirations for the environmental movement. His Guide to the Birds, published in 1934, was the first modern field guide. It went through several editions as did many other volumes in the Peterson Field Guide series which covered an array of subjects. He developed his own identification system and was known for the quality of his illustrations and his identification of appropriate field marks.

Good morning eyo, that's just creepy, criminal, fascist and an
utter dereliction of duty and public responsibility. In short, that's exactly what we should expect from our government and its alleged emergency services today. That's also a classic manipulative tactic - treat it as a given that everybody will have joined farcebook for long enough, and after a while it will become pretty much true, true enough to dismiss those who haven't as renegade outliers.
The invisible hand has always belonged to a pick pocket moonlighting as a proctologist, and always will.
Thanks for the information, and for Freebird, which I didn't feel like including because various.
Have a good one

Good morning, el. Thank you.
I don't have much to say today. On the bright side, I won't be posting any bad puns about this thread being for the birds or attempting any jive turkey jokes. So, there's that.
Atpart from the universe folding in on itself or some such, today is the only August 28, 2019 that we will ever have. I hope that each of us, sick or well, is able to find joy in it.
Wow. As I typed that, I thought of riverlover. We will always miss you, Lovely Spirit.

I don't remember even hearing about that one.
I remember this one though, speaking of birds.

conspiracy theoristsordinary folks apply common sense and conclude that they’re shady characters with something to hide.Hola, Az. That one was one of those classic cases where one
has to wonder about the rationality of the entire stunt and stunt mentality. High speed in formation loop, wow, cool. Try to do it as close to the ground as you possibly can without crashing, uh really, isn't that, in a very real sense, just bugfuck crazy?

Good morning, lot. Airshows are a strange thing, and thinking
soberly, it is a wonder that there aren't more disasters, but who thinks soberly. Thanks for reminding us of that bit of history. I wonder if anybody has ever dons a study of what percentage of such factors is attributable to each of, say, demos of experimental craft, demos of antiques, demos of the capabilities of the newest and hottest, and the aerial military drill teams formation flying stunts. It might be interesting to see.

Good morning, el ~~
Birds are so beautiful. Every weekend morning, after I feed the birds, I sit and watch them do their thing. Wish I was a bird - a real bird - with wings so I could fly far away.
Have a flighty day!

That still seems so weird to me.
So I guess I'd better throw this in for the sake of completion.

great stuff EL
Count me all in on the birds.
"Albatross" by Fleetwood Mac is timeless. Some of the vids have great albatross slide shows.
Hey azaz, that Bluebird is pretty dang good too!
I saw Roger Tory once in CT, we were both watching a Ross's Gull, 1984, Oyster River mouth.
Love that Frigatebird shot (high flyer). They had one recently at I think Ranch Canelo in southern AZ below Tucson.
Three Yellow Warbler at once at the bird bath this morning.
And better a Black-throated Green Warbler
Folks, please put water out. Birds need it more than food, many things that won't come to food come to water, like warblers above. A slow slow one-at-a-time drip works wonders.
Thanks for pluggin' the birds EL!

Good morning, dysto, cool to have birded with RTP. Thanks
for the grat warbler shots, all we get in my neighborhood are butterbutts and Townsend's.
And yes, keep water out for the birds and bugs and anything else that can get to it. Drippers or recirculating fountains are especially good because the noise draws them in.

Afternoon dystopian
This shit is bananas.
late to the bird party...
...been stretching garden fence wire. Got the first 5' in place. Next trick is 4 more feet.
I've seen the Ocellated turkey a couple of times in the Yucatan. I see our native turkeys daily. We've had the scarlet tanagers over summer with us this year. The summer tanagers are regulars but the scarlet (black winged red bird) are typically just transients.
We finally got some rain...about 2" over the last couple of days. Cooler temps are bringing a hint of fall to follow.
Hope all you birds have a good day!
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Good morning Lookout. That ocellated was, of course, from
Yucatan - part of a good sized flock. Those are the only one's I've seen. Cool about both the rain and tanangers. Western tanagers live up in the patch of the sierras where we spend the July 4th week, great to look at. I think I've only seen scarlets in central america, which is lousy with tanagers and tanager species - it's amazing.
Good luck with the fence - starting to dig some ground to make a garden, rock and gravel embedded throughout an adobe/serpentine base that is quasi saturated with medium to tiny roots of at least 3 trees. Several hours yesterday and today and my knees are already screaming from stomping the shovel.
Have a good one.

Afternoon EH, everyone
One of my favorite birding spots back in Utah has been having a botulism outbreak, killing some of the birds there. I guess enough people made a stink so they're actually going to clean it up! A small victory for once; I'll take it.
There's a falconer at the MN Renaissance Festival this year, OMFG! Can't wait to go!
Time to get out and refill my bird feeders, then play in the garden. Cheers!
This shit is bananas.
Afternoon, Daenerys. Botulism can become a sad fact of life,
it is established in both the Salton Sea and parts of the Hayward shoreline. My recollection is that it lies dormant in the mud until the temperture of the water reaches a certain threshold and then there is an outbreak.
Hope you enjoy the falconer and the rest of the fair.

I now have a caterpillar and bought a butterfly bush for it. The little guy got lost for a day and then found (in my kitchen). That was traumatic. All is well now. I hope. The Monarchs are trying to propagate but there are lots of predators on the eggs and cats. So I was advised to bring it inside. Think good thoughts. Thanks for the great ot. Love those bird folks. Have a good one...
