If Democrats want to win the White House, they'd better nominate Bernie

It all comes down to this: Bernie can win the General Election, and Hillary can't.

Here's a disturbing sign of what's gone wrong with the democratic party:

Democratic Convention Hosted by Republican Donors, Anti-Obamacare Lobbyists

THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY’S 2012 platform pledged to “curb the influence of lobbyists and special interests.” But the 2016 convention in Philadelphia will be officially hosted by lobbyists and corporate executives, a number of whom are actively working to undermine progressive policies achieved by President Barack Obama, including health care reform and net neutrality.

Some of the members of the 2016 Democratic National Convention Host Committee, whose job is to organize the logistics and events for the convention, are hardly even Democratic Party stalwarts, given that many have donated and raised thousands of dollars for Republican presidential and congressional candidates this cycle.

The composition of the 15-member Host Committee may appear out of sync with the rhetoric of Democratic presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton, but the reality is that the party, in the form of the Democratic National Committee, has moved decisively to embrace the lobbying industry. In October 2015, DNC chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., reportedly huddled with dozens of lobbyists to plan the convention in Philadelphia, and provided the influence peddlers involved with a menu of offerings in exchange for donations. In February, news reports revealed that the DNC had quietly lifted the Obama-era ban on federal lobbyist donations to the party and convention committee.

The party has sunk to worshiping money over principle. Shaun King was right. Here’s another example of how co-opted the establishment dems have become:

Top Democrats Ally With Oil and Gas Industry to Fight Colorado Anti-Fracking Ballot Measures

Oil and gas companies are spending heavily to crush three Colorado ballot initiatives that would limit fracking. And some of the state’s most powerful Democrats are helping them.

People have had enough of this bullshit, getting screwed by both sides. It’s time to bring the 1% to heel.

The remarkable thing about Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton’s incredibly high negatives

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton each took a big step toward winning their respective party nominations in Tuesday's New York presidential primaries. But if they do emerge as their party's picks, they will start the general-election campaign as the two least popular major party nominees in more than two decades -- and likely ever.

Face the facts, Hillary can’t win.

BREAKING: New Rasmussen Poll Says Hillary Clinton Cannot Beat Donald Trump In 2016

Could Republican presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump actually win the November election? The Hillary Clinton Democrats are still in denial about this very real possibility. Both Clinton and the Democratic party have declared her their informal presumptive nominee. But now, the latest poll numbers have smacked her and the party in the face.

Trump beats Clinton in a one-on-one race, according to a new Rasmussen Reports poll released Thursday.

In spite of the country’s anger against the establishment, which manifests itself in Trump’s and Bernie Sanders’ popularity, Clinton has plugged on, dragging the establishment in her wake. Cleary, she represents a party that refuses to change, and the consequence of that could easily mean a Trump presidency.

The poll shows Trump with a 5 percentage points win over Clinton, 42 to 37 percent, which is over the margin of error. The undecided only account for 7 percent of the votes, while 13 percent of the respondents would choose an entirely different candidate.

This should be quite disconcerting to the Democrats. Instead of accepting that Clinton is down in the polls, because she represents the establishment, they attack Bernie Sanders. Until now, they have treated him like a nuisance fly, but with Clinton losing to Trump in the polls, they blame Sanders for her faltering. In reality, Clinton is doing poorly in the polls for reasons specific to her.

The evidence is mounting that a Clinton nomination would be a debacle.

New National Poll: Trump Increasing Lead Over Clinton

New York billionaire has five-point lead over Clinton

snip

The new Rasmussen poll, the New York Daily News reports, "suggests Trump could be experiencing a popularity surge as he pivots away from many of the controversial and bigoted statements he made during the GOP primary and embraces more establishment positions as he prepares for the general election."

A separate NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll released this week showed Clinton with just a three-point lead over Trump—48 to 45 percent. That poll's margin of error is plus or minus 1.2 percentage points. And a Fox News national survey released Wednesday also showedTrump leading Clinton 45-42 percent, though that lead is within the survey's 3 percentage point margin of error.

Clinton challenger Bernie Sanders, for his part, has continued to point to polling showingthat he's the Democratic candidate able to trounce Trump—and that ability was only further bolstered by the Fox News poll which showed that in a hypothetical general election match-up between the Vermont senator and Trump, Sanders leads 46 to 42 percent.

"If you look at virtually every poll in the last six weeks we do better and often much better against Trump than Secretary Clinton," Sanders said Friday in North Dakota. "So if the goal is to defeat Donald Trump, we are the campaign to do that."

If you want to win and spare us the disgrace of a Trump presidency, you need to fall in with Bernie.

Why Bernie Sanders Is Our Best Chance to Beat Donald Trump

The very same people who condescendingly exhort Sanders followers to “do the math” on the nomination process seem to have left their own calculators at home when it comes to figuring out who can actually win this fall. So for the math-obsessed, here are some numbers for you. According to RealClearPolitics, Sanders beats Trump in polls by an average of 13 points while Clinton’s average lead over Trump has dwindled to five points with one outlier poll from CNN doing a lot of the heavy lifting to give her even that much of a lead. The two most recent polls, NBC and Gravis, give her a lead of only three points and two points respectively. This in a week that was supposedly terrible for Trump with embarrassing stories about his butler’s racist rants, his penchant for pretending to be his own publicist, and his lecherous ways with women.

According to the math, Sanders is a much better bet for November, which makes sense when you think about it. Consider, for example, that he has cleaned Clinton’s clock with independents. Come November, these independent voters will have their every mood and microclimate measured by a Democratic party desperate to win them over. For now, however, they either don’t enter the calculus, or they are used to grant greater legitimacy to Clinton voters who are the “real” Democrats. Here’s a reality check folks: Independents win elections. They like Bernie and they hate Hillary. That’s to say nothing of the fact that a majority of voters find Clinton untrustworthy, a reality I’m confident will not be helped by her general election “pivot” to yet another version of the real HRC.

Hillary and her supporters claim to have already won what they are steadily losing.

Why Voters Might "Respectfully Disagree" With Clinton's Declaration of Victory

snip

Meanwhile with Clinton trailing Trump nationally, polling group wonders: 'Are Democrats on track to nominate the wrong candidate?'

The Bernie Sanders campaign struck back at Hillary Clinton on Thursday for her statement that the Democratic presidential nominating process was "already done," pointing to not only the nine remaining contests, but also poll after poll showing Sanders outperforming Clinton in hypothetical match-ups against presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump.

Clinton told CNN on Thursday: "I will be the nominee for my party. That is already done, in effect. There is no way that I won't be."

But Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs, in a strongly worded statement issued late Thursday afternoon, begged to differ.

"In the past three weeks voters in Indiana, West Virginia and Oregon respectfully disagreed with Secretary Clinton," Briggs said. "We expect voters in the remaining nine contests also will disagree. And with almost every national and state poll showing Sen. Sanders doing much, much better than Secretary Clinton against Donald Trump, it is clear that millions of Americans have growing doubts about the Clinton campaign."

A new Rasmussen poll published Friday finds Sanders ahead of Trump, 45-41 percent, but Trump ahead of Clinton, 42-37 percent.

The polling group wonders: "Are Democrats on track to nominate the wrong candidate?"

So, will the pragmatists join Bernie for the win or go down in a blaze of glory folly and give us President Trump? I guess we'll see soon enough.

have remained constant: The more people become familiar with Sanders, his policies and his history, the more they are inclined to vote for him. The more people learn of Clinton and her past and her policies, the more you hear, "No thanks."

HRC seems to be the choice of the old and the venal plus steady support from African Americans. Sanders is gaining support among Hispanics and Native Americans and has the under 30s - a significant cohort - sewn up. Also the lefties, the environmentally aware, the anti-war people, and those who are just fed up with the USA creating dire havoc in the middle east and the global south.

Sanders is growing the party - Clinton is shrinking it.

Seems like if you want to win, Win with Bernie. If you want to lose, but keep control of the decaying party apparatus, stick with Clinton.

Now which stance benefits We The People?? Hmmm.

Set up of an economic collapse which further allowed the wealth classes as well as the political classes to harvest more wealth from the middle and working classes.

Almost always (this year being the exception), when a candidate becomes the 'presumptive' nominee, they usually get a poll boost. Especially among party-leaning independents. That has not happened here. At all. In fact, the opposite has happened since Hillary 'declared' herself the presumptive nominee. I also think that even though they were mostly successful with their media spin on what happened in 'Vegas, it has actually back-fired big time on any party unity. Bernie supporters tend to not be consumers of traditional media - and this just causes us to distrust the media even more.

doesn't care if it loses rather than have a Sanders Presidency. As long as the two parties are the two sides of the same coin the oligarchy will continue unabated. Corporate control of the election process only means that for social issues there might be more enlightenment if the coin flips to the blue; economic issues would (maybe) be better also if the coin flips to the blue, but only marginally. Either side of that coin will certainly continue the momentum of funneling $$ to the top 0.01% while incomes stagnate or lose ground for the rest.

This is the most unconventional election since 1948, when Dixiecrats and other "third parties, intervened in the process, thankfully giving us Harry Truman as President. Truman continued FDR's legacy, and was a good, honest man who did what was right for the country, instead of doing what would benefit him personally.
This year's presidential election will bring us to the point where the two major parties will put forward as their candidates, extremely unpopular candidates. The Republican party has great ability to coalesce around its nominee as proven time and again. Some Republicans will not follow the party line, but they will be a small number. On the other hand, the Democratic party is fighting for its very soul. Progressives have far less less proclivity to unite behind flip-flopping, deceitful Hillary Clinton, who is bought by the establishment, than is her opponent Bernie Sanders. Current polling says that between 20 and 40% of Sanders supporters will not support Hillary in the general election. This number WILL increase as a frustrated Clinton campaign undoubtedly becomes more and more hostile to the very voters, Berniecrats, they desperately need to win the election. If the level of dissatisfaction with the Democratic establishment rises over 50%, we will see the Democrats going the way of the Whigs in the 19th Century. I suspect that a Progressive-Green amalgam will emerge to fill the vast left-sided void in current American politics.

I only wish Sanders had campaigned on this idea starting a lot earlier. I have been saying it for months in private conversations.

Clinton supporters who continue to beat the drum of "she's been vetted for years" are willfully ignorant of her continuing drop in favorables in national polling or that she has only been shown beating Trump a few times in polling over the entire last year.

I don't think she will beat Trump in November and that loss will come via Independent voters she is already throwing under the bus.

HRC isn't only throwing Independents under the bus. She's doing a great job throwing real, true blue Democrats under the bus. I'm a lifelong Democrat who, in 1964, supported LBJ though I couldn't vote until '72. This will be the first election that I do not vote for the Dem nominee, if it is HRC. What the Clintons have done to my party is reprehensible. I will not be an enabler. Time for a major re-alignment. It seems the nation is ready for one too.

Frankly, I'm more worried about HRC as POTUS than Trump. I expect she'll get the privatization of SS done early, and then more war, war, war. It will be scandals 24/7/365 and she'll be out there lying her ass off.

Trump is now getting support from the Cruz lovers. I suspect Hillary will gain if it becomes clear that she will be the nominee. Which, we hope, never occurs...but might.

Meanwhile the "realists" continue to argue that non-existent polls of the future based on Republican attacks on Bernie would show whatever their fantasy is.

Heard a Hillary supporter on the Thom Hartmann show this morning talking about a poll that showed 17% of Bernie people will vote for Trump and she said in an almost alarmed voice "we have to talk them out of it!" I thought to myself, "why?" I mean, shouldn't we be discussing talking Hillary voters out of voting for Hillary in California?

I'm so sick of hearing 'polls like this don't matter this far out'. That is a complete load of bull. The pollsters wouldn't be paid for this data if there wasn't some value to it. All available evidence points to Bernie more easily beating Trump than Hillary. No nominee with as low a favorability rating as Hillary has ever won the presidency. OTOH, no nominee as high as Bernie's has LOST the general election. So when Trump beats Hillary, there is only Hillary and her supporters to blame. They are cutting their own throats, but the reality is they would rather see Trump as president than Bernie.

Bernie being a crazed conspiracy theorist who plans to overturn Democracy by convincing the superdelagates that he is the more viable candidate, plus he wants to suppress the African-American and Latino vote (per Kos).

I would say the one who is beyond the pale is Kos. Who has to spell it out? Every single day that goes by offers up the possibility that some world-tilting-on-its-axis scandal involving Hillary or Bill or both involving her emails, national security, the FBI, the Clinton Foundation, etc. will rear its head and be so massive that dismissively calling it a "nothing burger" is not going to make it go away.

I think the only thing Bernie has to say is "I promised I would stay in until every vote was counted and that's what I'm going to do. I think it is prudent to stay in a race where the environment for potential unexpected events is so great". That's still a lot more tactful than Hillary citing what happened to Bobby Kennedy.

IMO, the DNC bigwigs and the superdelegates want the ability to nominate someone other than Sanders should anything happen to make the candidacy of Hillary unviable. They want to be able to say" Oh, look! The only remaining candidate in the race has (fill in the blank). We'll have to go to the bull-pen and make (fill in the blank) our candidate."

that most candidates who drop out of the race do so due to money problems. I believe Bernie has enough money to stay in until the last voter has voted. And the reason he should stay in is to allow all those who did support him to have the opportunity to have their votes counted. That is what our democratic system is supposed to do...allow every voter to have his or her say.

What we have witnessed over at dkos, from the Clinton campaign, and the Democratic party is a wholesale attempt to suppress voting and the democratic process. Yes, kos owns his site, but his March 15 edict was censorship with the aim of suppressing dissent. Stealing of votes and electioneering which Bill Clinton did in at least two states, along with the Clintonian dirty tricks demonstrate a weak candidate who has nothing but contempt for the process and the voters within that process.

Markos is so transparent. He has his head so far up the DNC's ass that he is willing to sacrifice his site for a corrupt candidate. Back when I was working in government, there were times when I was asked by my superiors to compromise my reports. I never once gave in because the most important thing to me was my integrity. Once you sacrifice your integrity, it is nearly impossible to get it back.

This thinking is manifest in the increasingly ludicrous Daily Kos web site. Their “front page” has for months highlighted the various gaffes and outrageous comments of Trump and the other (now failed) Republican candidates. Very rarely do they mention HRC on the front page — what’s the point?

I used to visit and post there pretty regularly, but Kos is pretty much out of my rotation now — the Hillary shilling just got too much to bear. I repeatedly challenged Hillbots to give me ISSUES-based reasons to support her over Bernie, and instead repeatedly got mushpoop like “she’s a fighter” or “she’s more electable”, or “she’s got the experience” and other similar flaccid arguments.
It’s sad, really. That site was a major player in the (temporary, alas) booting of the execrable Joe Lieberman. Noiw it’s rallied behind a candidate who’s basically Lieberman without the Y chromosome.

is how radically our perspectives will be forced to shift once it's over. At first, nobody took Trump seriously. The media treated him like a sideshow or tried to chalk up his rise to just racism or various other pathologies native to Flyover Country (but never to themselves, of course.) GOP officials scrambled to prop up a challenger or find an alternative. Yet after Trump wins the election, I think we'll all be able to look back and see the road that brought us here, as clearly marked as any interstate. The GOP rank-and-file has long been in revolt against its elites, the middle and working classes are dying, and there has been widespread dissatisfaction with the Obama administration since its early days. The only reason the Republicans were unable to capitalize on this unrest in 2012 is that they nominated an aloof, untrustworthy tool of Wall Street.

Guess which party is making that mistake this time around.

Ok! Starting over at Day One. Calling my sponsor and picking up the pace on my meeting schedule. 30 day chip or bust!

"They'll say we're disturbing the peace, but there is no peace. What really bothers them is that we are disturbing the war." Howard Zinn

comment thread at kos was swarmed exceptionally quickly today, but you still made the list, so lots of eyes on the diary, at least.

The swarm was mainly 2 camps.

One attacked Bernie for theoretical future attacks that may come from Trump basically listing right wing talking points of the type that are banned when attacking Hillary. Mostly straight up red-baiting stuff.

The other camp was mainly Rasmussen baaaad!!!

And tons of sore-winnerism, as usual.

into sore losers, I have bookmarked this essay page for future reference...the good articles cited above, and the comments below, should be helpful to fend of accusations of "Naderism."

when we have such arguments as above. We can laugh at them, and they can go pout in their Korner.

rather than hand the nod to Bernie. Then blame Her Highness' defeat on Bernie and Berniecrats. Totally irrelevant in Nov., 2015. Totally to blame in Nov., 2016. Gotta love it.

Beware the bullshit factories.

The Democratic Party establishment is a lot more invested in keeping the gravy train rolling than it is in defeating Donald Trump, and the True Believers who constitute the majority of the party's rank-and-file have shown themselves more than willing to sign off on whatever corrupt beltway hack the party establishment puts forward as its champion. So the head-to-head numbers showing Bernie doing vastly better than Clinton against Trump won't change the determination to nominate her one iota.

That said, it's still not a done deal, so I am totally supportive of the idea of fighting until the last vote is cast, and the last delegate awarded. Perhaps there will be some totally unexpected development like an indictment, or leak of Clinton's Wall St. speech transcripts, that will dramatically alter the dynamics in Bernie's favor. But if things play out as expected, progressives definitely need to begin asking themselves if the Democratic Party really represents the preferred vehicle for pursuing a bold and uncompromising reform agenda going forward.

OPOL, great to see you posting here. Your contributions are one of the few things I missed since I stopped visiting GOS.

Well in WI the Rs turnout and vote no question about it. The Rs I know would vote for Satan if their was an R behind the name,They are the fanatical tea bagger type, I don't talk politics with them anymore as I had one hell of an argument with my support of Bernie. They also cant stand Hillary and will vote for Trump just to see her lose even though they are not wild about Trump.

Win on Bernie's terms? Hell no, they don't wanna! They want cushy DNC jobs and cabinet posts under the Clintons, or they'll use their insider status and friends in government to become "consultants", the sanitized word for lobbyists. You see, they don't care if they back a loser. Either way, they'll get their payday.
