Open Thread for May 16, Happy St. Brendan's Day
Before we take a look at 16, please note that being here on a Monday the 16th always means you just survived a Friday the 13th, so major congrats on that.
OK
16 is 4 squared and 2 to the fourth or 4**2 and 2**4. Coincidence? I don't think so.
16 is the only number that equals both a**b and b**a for some unequal integers a & b.
16 is the base for the Hexadecimal numeral system, aka Hex
Counting in Hex runs from 0 to 9 then A,B,C,D,E, and F for 10 through 15
Hex is used a ton in computer science, computers and computing
16 is sulfur
There are 16 ounces in a pound
16 is the minimum age for doing assorted things in various nations and states.
Title 16 of the US Code is Conservation
The 16th Amendment states that
The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.
This does not mean what it says, ask any crank.
16 BCE was the Year of the Consulship of Ahenobarbus and Scipio (Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus and Publius Cornelius Scipio)
Roman legate Marcus Lollius was defeated by a Germanic horde. This was/is called "The Lollian Disaster" because the German raiders bagged the legionary standard (the Eagle).
Nonetheless, Caesar Augustus reorganized the German provinces and made Trier their capital. Trier is way cool. It has a ton of Roman ruins and Marx spent a chunk of his childhood there, in the Salmonish second story dwelling in the center of this picture:
Naturally, capitalists have to exploit this connection, such as by selling whatever type of couture Modehaus Marx sells
It has been said that one is either on the bus or off of the bus and Marx, well ...
16 CE was the Year of the Consulship of Taurus and Libo (sounds like bull to me)
A Roman army of 50,000 men commanded by Germanicus won a victory at Idistaviso, defeating the German war chief Arminius and recovering the lost eagles of Varus' legions. (Those were the 3 eagles Varus lost in 9 BCE, not the paltry lone eagle Lollius lost in 16 BCE.)
The Noricans joined with the Pannonians in invading Histria, and were defeated by Publius Silius, proconsul of Illyricum.

OK, it's open thread time, so go for it
Here's a link http://caucus99percent.com/content/monday-hex-open-thread to my 11/16/2015 open thread which has a lot of "16" songs like:
That open thread also gratuitously included this musical excellence by bassist Tal Wilkenfeld:

Wasn't Brandan
the dude who discovered America in his currach?
There is no such thing as TMI. It can always be held in reserve for extortion.
That allegation has been made, whence
"St. Brendan the Navigator", but it is not too widely accepted, iirc.
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
The currach was modelled on the Inuit
'Umiak', a large, multi-person skin boat, which could be equipped with sails. There is evidence that they made it to, or at least near, Ireland, coming from America.
"I’m a human being, first and foremost, and as such I’m for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole.” —Malcolm X
The currach, of course, may have been a homegrown
expansion of the concept of the coracle. The design, or similar ones, pop up where persons live near water and have those materials around.
THIS is a total rewrite of a duplicate posting - let's see where it winds up.

Thanks, mimi, good to see people taking action.

Good morning eh and all you c99er's.
There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties.. This...is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution.--John Adams
Good morning, kharma, happy Monday.

Morning, EL, and all. Romans treated the loss of a legion eagle
standard like Americans treated Pearl Harbour and 9/11. They went into complete hysterics over the loss of national prestige and sallied forth with all their might all all directions clobbering anyone who might have had anything or nothing to do with the Mother Of All Insults for years on end.
Nothing ever changes, eh. Humans, meh.
Then again, on the upside there's Chuck Berry. And a young Johnny Carson. And Sam Cook.
Enjoy your day :=)

Love the picture, great context for modern bullshit
rhetoric.

OMG that’s grim but hilarious
in a “Last Gasp of a Dying Empire” gallows humor sort of way.
Now I know what TTP reminds me of.
It’s the American remake of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.
Heh, and so it is. Thanks for making that connection.

Oh, well said indeed, lotlizard! You always get to the heart of
the matter :=)

"The People Missing in Action on America's Wars"
It's amazing. Tom talks about the 2003 protests against the Iraq war and how impressive they were and how since then there has been nothing while we not only still have the Iraq war but the Syria war, Libya war, Yemen war, Cold War, regime changes in Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador, etc. WE are experiencing World War III right now and the people are sitting on their asses like nothing is happening.
Frankly, the Bernie supporters are the same as everybody else, ignoring what is going on for the sake of politics. The upcoming People's Summit has not one word on its website against wars or the WWIII we are in, or U.S. imperialism if you reject that premise.
We get what we deserve if we refuse to help ourselves.

a day devoted to war/peace
at Nader's get together next week. https://www.breakingthroughpower.org/
It is my understanding it will stream. I know you're not big on meetings Al, but some folks might find it useful. I've got a gig and will miss it live, but I'm hoping some of it will be available afterwards.
Here's the day 3 details:
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Thanks Lookout, at least they're talking about it.
I didn't know about this, I think I may try to put in my two cents worth.
Appreciate the link.
No, we're not.
And I'm not getting off your lawn ; )
So kinda rough day today.
My mom is royally pissed at me because I didn't bother to respond to her attempts to insert herself back into my life and my kids lives. What she fails to understand is that every time she gets involved in my life, I end up doing worse, feeling worse and falling apart. (Short term, I do ok, but long term the result is always the same)
So, I know she's reading my blogging, so I'll just say It's not because of anything you did Mom. It's because I and my kids react very badly to what you think is helping. It's not. If anything it comes across as attempts to drag us back into your little club, and the oaths of loyalty demanded are too much, sorry. I've written you too many apologies to get back into your good graces. Never again. I still love you for what you have done in the past, but my future depends on not being around you or dealing with you.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
...and so become yourself
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
You're very strong and wise.
Good for you.
Remember when flying was fun?
Then this happened
Remember when Americans would fight back against
unwarranted intrusions based on lies?
Me neither.
kaufman
didn't die on this day. He just went into hiding, having deliberately faked his death. After a decade or so, he returned, subsumed in the character of George II—in which role he was (s)elected as President of the United States. It was his greatest prank.
The proof, it is incontrovertible. Regard, for instance, how, in the video below, he stands with his arms stiffly down along his sides, staring woodenly out at the audience, after trying, and failing, to get through a locked door. Classic Kaufman.
