Rex Murphy: Hillary Clinton's long, tortured, road ahead

0514-ed-murphy.png

Rex Murphy of the National Post (Canada) has a great article about Hillary Clinton's long and painfully winding road ahead.

He sums it up as:

In Clinton's dreams, Sanders is The Monster from the Lagoon. Trump will annihilate her

It's a great short read from an outside perspective that I think really sums up current reality.

Hillary Clinton’s long, tortured, road ahead

seems to think Bernie is an anachronism, "out of joint" with the times, who "could have tuned Pete Seeger's guitar," and that Bernie supporters are simply to young to know what they are seeing. (Not that being a Pete Seeger throwback is entirely a bad thing.)

On the other hand, his point about Hillary's campaign is correct.

I'm a Bernie supporter who's had it with 'serious analysts'. I don't think he puts down Bernie as ridiculous. I liked it. Short and sweet as far as what's going down with The Mad Bomber and the serious people who people the current New Democratic party's apparatchik.

Face it this primary has shown exactly how out of touch and rigged the Democratic party is and apparently was in 2008 when 'the one we had been waiting for' that was supposed to be us pulled a weaselly bait and switch and won.

The gloves are off and we've all seen up close and mean spirited the puppet string pullers. Ask me Obama was from his speech at Kerry's convention and before groomed and put in place as a back up to counteract the blow back from the Bushies. So here we are again voting for a choice hoisted on us by hook or crook by the pols who own and run the Dem. party. I liked the article it wasn't about Bernie as a persona per say but about the awfulness of the Dem. Party and the Clinton machine.

TPTB knew that the American people were fed up with what Bush and the republicans had done to this country, especially when it came to the wars and income inequality.
So they ran the charming black man who came out of nowhere during the 04 campaign.
He promised us so much, yet delivered so little. Bait and switch.
I wish that candidate Obama was the president we got instead of the con man.
But he's still fooling people who think he's the greatest president since FDR.
However income inequality has gotten worse under him and the rich have gotten richer. The poor are hardly on the radar anymore and the middle class is shrinking.
He promised to end the Iraq war, yet there's troops back in Iraq.
He has a fucking kill list that is unconstitutional after Ford declared that the US couldn't assassinate people anymore, especially Americans without due process.
The use of drones in countries we aren't at war with goes against the Nuremberg principles.

And Hillary says that she is going to continue his legacy? Well, ain't that special?

I thought that was a sweet to the point article and I liked this part the best about her cashing in on IOUs and support from the fear she inspires among her allies.
But what is most gauling is that she bought the 33 delegates before she even declared that she was running for president.
It is NOT HER TURN
It should be the better candidate. Period and that is Bernie

This time it is so different. This time Hillary may finally get the nomination — after a life in politics, cashing in on a generation or two of IOUs, deploying her army of gender warriors, leaning on her cohorts in the liberal press, dusting off Bill and sending him out to rouse or agitate the dwindling number of true believers. She has every possible means of campaign support, from the fear she inspires among her allies, to the Clinton hold on much of the party, to some of the most wicked campaign doctors in the business, all fused and fired by her own ardent, fever-ridden ambition and preternatural sense of pure entitlement. Remember: IT IS HER TURN.

What passes for conservatives in The Great White North are represented by The National Post. It is inevitable in my estimation that the political view which dominates that editorial board will see the remaining American presidential candidates as less than desirable. Yet if one reads the entire post, one sees that while Drumpf is mentioned the least, it is in a somewhat disparaging mode. Sanders actually gets a begrudging kind of respect:

...[Hillary] is barely crawling her way to the convention, being bested in primary after primary, by one of the most unlikely, ungainly, unhip and unscripted candidates in a presidential election ever: the awesome socialist septuagenarian Bernie Sanders.

[snip]

Sanders has played fair. He has treated Hillary with respect, even deference. He threw out an assault on her outstanding weakness — the secret server and all its classified emails. He took, insofar as one can in this era, the high road.

There is more.

The real loser in the eye of the author -as I see it- is the Democratic Party. He asks a fair question as to their dogged determination to force Hillary into the Oval Office over our objections:

If she is still just barely winning [against Sanders], what hope can she really have when He Who Knows No Boundaries Whatsoever steps [up] to work his inexplicable magic?

I am astonished that a Canadian conservative would offer even a back-handed supporting comment to aid Bernie Sanders, much less this comment which isn't is uncomplimentary is it first looks. I'd love to know what motivated him to do so.

had such different takes on this article. I really liked it, and I wasn't offended in the least. I didn't see any of the author's compliments to Bernie as back-handed, and I thought the analysis was fairly spot on. It seemed to me to be legitimately praise-worthy, and Murphy certainly has Clinton and the Democratic Party pegged to an absolute tee.

Yes, he is as conservative a "shock jock" as Canada gets.

That means is probably center-right US, today.

But, anyway, I personally saw his descriptions of Bernie as being what Hillary and her supporters would think. Not his own opinion. Everything he said bad about Bernie is what I envision Team With Her would say.

This is a common rhetorical device used to denigrate the delusions of the person you are taking down.

And from a hard ass third-way DLC perspective, what Rex said is clearly what 3rd Way/DLC people believe. Thus I feel quotes.

From what I see of his other articles. He doesn't like Clinton, but he is not pro-trump in anyway. Is that not most of our positions, even if he comes from the right? His position seems to be that they are sort of MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction) and he takes schadenfreude from their battles.

The Democrats are playing against the laws of cause and effect. Hillary’s campaign is dead, and she’s winning. Bernie’s is alive, and he’s losing. How can such things be? Should she actually win the nomination, as all the journalists and pundits keep telling us she will and must, the Democratic party will have said “No!” to enthusiasm, inspiration and excitement. They will have said no to Bernie’s peoples’ campaign, and re-embraced the cynical, entitled, passionless politics of the Clinton machine.

This would be a curious strategy even in normal times. Up against Trump the Implacable it is wildly out of tune. Sanders has played fair. He has treated Hillary with respect, even deference. He threw out an assault on her outstanding weakness — the secret server and all its classified emails. He took, insofar as one can in this era, the high road. I don't give a rats ass about 'reasonable' either. I take umbrage here as I'm the far lefty ranter and raver at Thanksgiving. I am the old curmudgeon at the table. Who cares. I liked what he wrote and I'm done getting all agitated about the persona of the writer just as I'm sick and done with looking at the persona of the pols. i liked the piece and agreed wholeheartedly.

Hard these days to get all worked up about what's PC or which pundirt, talking huge head is right or wrong, or a foe or ally. It's all up for grabs and indistinguishable when the differences between the players is so minuscule. I just don't give a shit who said what or what a dick they are. Hey in a world where the Dem's. tell me The Mad Bomber is better then Trump no way I'm going to believe that shit

On the other hand in a world that says here's what your looking at choice wise I open to hearing anyone but the 'serious people' they say are serious and know the skinny. Left right or the dreaded center. All of which are made up as there is only the one and only inevitable, incremental, pragmatic, possible 'world as we find it.' Axelrod, psalm, 2010 AD

My husband is a liar and a cheat. He has cheated on me from the beginning and when I confront him, he denies everything. What's worse, everyone knows he cheats on me. It's so humiliating.
Also, since he lost his job 14 years ago, he hasn't even looked for a new one. All he does all day is smoke cigars, cruise around and shoot bull with his buddies and has sex with hookers while I work so hard to pay our bills.
Since our daughter went away to college and then got married, he doesn't even pretend to like me, and hints that I may be a lesbian.
What should I do?

Too bad he's Canadian; what a magnificent take on the unholy state of things in the States. I recently read yet another takedown of Bernie by a Clinton surrogate, probably Charles Blow in the NY Times, in which he claims that Bernie should leave the race, the delegate math is impossible, and concludes that Bernie is running a "zombie campaign" since he can't win. Bernie's only mission is to act as a spoiler in Hill's campaign, preventing her from running against Trump now, forcing her to spend money on ads in upcoming primaries, and "distracting" her from the prize.

The sad irony is that the winner, Hillary, is the one running a zombie campaign and the person who should be the winner is the loser. The topsy-turvey world of the Democratic party has put in the fix and there's nothing short of a blood-in-the-streets revolution that will set things right.

There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don't know we don't know.

about this. It's not like any of us are gonna marry the guy or think he's swell or something. He wrote a good article. So what?

You're obviously invested in your anger over this, so have at it. I'm out.

Why do people not get that?

we encourage diverse opinion and difference of opinion here, when done in a civil manner. We get it that you think he is a RWNJ, please tone the hostility down about 5 notches, OK.

I think, being from Canada and a former NatPost subscriber, that I'm pretty familiar with Murphy and his newspaper. To know him/it is to despise him/it. One good (? opinions differ) article hardly negates his years of right-wing rants.

Let me know when you praise C. Krauthammer for one of his articles.

With that, I will now leave this particular subject. I have no desire to be antagonistic, so I'll just take a deep breath (or two) and move on to other matters.

Thanks for putting up with me, and have a great day!

Krauthammer, but I think you know that and probably didn't mean "me" in the personal sense. But if someone does praise him it is their right here, and it's also your right to push back, in a civil manner. Discourse in a civil manner is all we ask here.

but we do probably know Krauthammer. So that’s actually an illuminating analogy, and I for one have no trouble empathizing with your feelings of revulsion — just not the momentary use of fellow c99ers as the target of them.

is to keep slaying the messengers with their every message. I would not castigate Charles Krauthammer if he said the same things this writer said, even though I find him to be a detestable person otherwise. Mind you, if I had read those things from Krauthammer, I'd wonder why he wrote them, but then I'd ask myself what he had to gain by doing so. If I couldn't come up with anything tangible other than "it's deadline and I have to write something", then I have to believe either he's screwed up royally or else he's woken up (and maybe even has a death wish? Who knows?) and he's not long for his masthead.

Worth keeping an eye on, just for that reason alone. I don't know this writer--is he nearing retirement?

Still does radio segments for other shows. Argues against man-made climate change. Delivers paid speeches to companies in the oil industry.

Do you think what he has to say in the article which spawned this post is incorrect? After all, someone obviously paid him to write it.

Those in the twilights of their careers often are more illuminating than they were at the beginnings of them.

Post 2008-economic crisis, his message has a lot more resonance than it did at any point prior to the 1940s. A lot of what he's saying had truth decades ago, but now, it's almost unavoidable and impossible to ignore. Canada weathered the economic crisis much better than the U.S. did thanks to high oil prices, better bank regulations (at the time) and a much stronger social safety net. So maybe that's why Murphy underestimates the relevance of Sanders message to the present. Canada may go through a U.S. crisis if oil prices stay low, but from 2008-2016 it hasn't experienced the same kind of crisis that we are still digging out from.

As far as Sanders pulling punches, I don't think he really deserves a ton of credit for this. If he had attacked Clinton earlier, I think it would have backfired in a Democratic primary, because Clinton is fairly popular within the party, and he was the unknown outsider. When he established himself and became better known, he had a little more freedom to sharpen the contrasts.

As far as the general election goes, I don't think Trump will necessarily be stronger against Clinton than Sanders has been in the primary. I think this is part of the reason that Clinton has lost her cool at times with Sanders -- he is hitting her with legitimate issues regarding conflicts of interest and character.

The thing that is damaging to Clinton aren't the 1990s scandals. Many were over-hyped and overdone. Benghazi has been beaten to death too. If the GOP plays those up, they are just playing to their base, and not to people outside of the Fox News bubble. Clinton's vulnerability is really more in terms of things like the Clinton Foundation and the pay-to-play big money politics that she has been involved with. The use of the private email server as a way of avoiding FOIA disclosures is an issue. Trump, however, isn't in a great position to exploit those lines of attack. Because he is an even bigger fraud. The second Sheldon Adelson starts writing $100 million to a SuperPAC to support Trump, the idea that Trump is "unbought" also evaporates with it. The biggest x-factor for the Dems really relates to the FBI investigation. If something comes of that, Clinton is in trouble. If she's cleared, and wins the nomination, though, I think she will have to make a number of other unforced errors in order to open the door for a buffoon like Trump. e.g. VP selection, antagonizing people within the party by moving too far to the right, etc.
