Photography Assignment - Macro and Closeup
The Assignment
Just about all cameras made in the last decade can take good closeup photographs. If you are not sure if yours does, or what settings to use, not post the make and model number in the comments and I'll try to help. The standard symbol used on cameras for macro/closeup function is a stylized flower.
Images can be traditional or more arty and subject matter can be anything small or a small part of something bigger. Flowers are an obvious choice for this type of photography but just about anything can make a good potential subject.
There are several ways to get a macro or close up shot:
Set your camera to macro and get in close
Use a longer focal length and stand away from the subject (usually 3ft or more).
Crop an image on the computer - just about all editing software will allow you to do this (don't go smaller than 500px though).Any questions please ask and I'll give more specific/detailed help in the comments.

-Looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!

I have a couple :)
First, a critter:
Sphinx moth caterpillar
And a wildflower:
Staghorn cholla (cactus) flower
They were already pretty colorful, I just increased the color saturation on both.

Hi yellopig
Love these - they look painterly - especially the flower.
I don't take many pics of insects - here is one of the rare few:

That's a nice one, stevej!
LOL, looking at my collection, it seems I take a lot of pictures of wildflowers and insects.

that's sharp
I find it really hard to get the insect and not the flower in really sharp focus. You've nailed this shot.
