Trans woman found dead in Maryland hotel
Keyonna Blakeney, 22, was found dead in a room of the Red Roof Inn Saturday morning. She had suffered severe trauma to her upper body. Police classified her death as a homicide.
Police were also very quick to suggest that Keyonna may have been working as a prostitute and to release her arrest history.
Blakeney was from Upper Marlboro and attended Bowie State University. She worked as a makeup artist.
This is the thirteenth transwoman murdered this year. All have been women of color.
At this rate, last year's record of 21 transgender women murdered in the US will be smashed this year. At the current rate for 2016, there will be 43 total trans women murdered.
Keyonna's sister, Jasmine Blakeney, said Keyonna had finally rented an apartment after some time moving from hotel to hotel. She was planning to move in at the end of the month and to finally have some stability in her life.
Detectives have been working around the clock on this case. We need anyone with information regarding the murder of Keyonna to contact us.
--Capt. Paul Starks, Montgomery County police spokesman
Someone out there is evil who did this. My son was, is, very special. He was kindhearted. He was down-to-earth. He would give you his last if he had it.
--Kenny Linton, victim's father
It is clear that Keyonna's family have gender/pronoun problems.
Keyonna split time between her father's home in DC and her mother's home in Prince George County.
He didn’t do boys stuff; he did girls stuff.
She loved doing people’s makeup. She loved fashion. She loved all the glamorous stuff girls do.

He was still my child. I couldn’t turn my back on who he was.
--Linton
Linton said Keyonna did not have steady income, so Linton sometimes gave her money to stay in hotels.
She was hotel hopping. She didn’t have nowhere to go.

When even the victim's family can't accept them as they are,
but keeps forcing their image into tight conventional pigeonholes, there's really no hope of anything ever being any better.
Sometimes I think the asteroid can't bring its Earth-Shattering Kaboom any too soon. Humans suck.
There is no justice. There can be no peace.
I just love how the police
I just love how the police treat this with a sub-text that being a possible sex worker minimizes the impact. This is and was a person, and to dismiss the value of that person is as awful as the murder.
