10/26 Open Thread- Intersex Awareness Day
Some bearded dragons are intersex. This condition occurs in other animals as well. That includes humans, where an estimated 1 to 2 percent of all humans are intersex. Hermaphroditic animals and humans are technically a subset of intersex animals and humans. All banana slugs are not just intersex but hermaphroditic
A somewhat related factoid: Since days of yore there has been a type of sailing vessel known as a hermaphrodite brig. They're two masted, square rigged on the foremast, and schooner rigged on the main mast. That is a classic "schooner rig" with a triangular topsail above a gaff rigged main sail. I was going to use a picture of one for this column and discovered that use of the term is now limited to Europe, while modern US usage is to call such a vessel a "Brigantine", a word that used to be used for a different type of two masted vessel having a square rigged topsail and sometimes even a top gallant above the gaff rigged mainsail. (Of course, in large portions of the US, they use yawl as a pronoun instead of the noun applying to a two masted craft with the mizzen stepped abaft the rudder post, so what can you expect.) ![]()

Hey, good morning
.
Happy to hear Lula eked out a victory in Brazil in spite of the
interferences by 3 letter US spooks. Neither trumpet nor
Bolsonaro accept the results. The left still has a toe hold in
Latin America, which is good IMO. A balance is necessary. And
Iran wants to strengthen ties with them. Imagine China is pleased
with the results as well.
Thanks for helping with the sign-in snafu. Went with another browser
per your suggestion and it works!

I wrote a reply that got eaten and when I re-wrote
it I forgot to click reply - so it is somewhere down below. Glad you're back

Ahhh, goor morning and good to see you Cap'n Q.
Good for Lula too.
Glad to help. I run 4 browsers becase each one has idiosyncracies or broken as to specific things; Firefox and Chrome/Chromium, both mainstream, Brave and Yandex, both not so mainstream. You are the person I first heard about Yandex from, so thanks for that.
BTW, I suspect that the site has been under attack for a few days now, it seems to glitch up far more than normal, but that could also be my hardware+os+software set up, one can never tell. There is something called a UEFI and KEK that M$ and Apple update automatically for their users, but which I must do manually, and I keep putting off, but it's supposed to go south for the old variants by EOM. Life is just like that.

Good morning...
As to your topic, there are apomictic plants that produce viable seed without fertilization.
In other news, I agree with QMS about the Brazilian election. Brazil saved it self from becoming a US colony ... for now.
Thanks for the OT and all the music!

Good morning Lookous. Thanks for the owrd. It is a form
or variant of some other word coverning asexual reproduction in both plants and animals. I've known about some of the animals but never thought about plants.
As toBrazil, who knows how divided the country really is. We can be wure that the US is stirring up the pot and probably funding and providing bodies for a lot of the opposition.

Lula is on video
claiming his first order of business is to crack down on social media. WTF? Oppose him and go dark? Or to prison? The number 1 problem to address?
So, when I visited Brazil, Bolsonaro the First was in office. Tax breaks for the rich. Wage stagnation. Loss of social services. Young people resorting to the sex industry and rampaging petty theft to make ends meet. Close ties to the US. The middle class dwindled by the day. The only happy people were rich, one percenters.
My hope for Brazil and Lula's success lasted 12 hours.
sigh...

My time spent in Brazil only had a brief
.
visit to Rio, the rest of the time was spent in Belem, a smaller ciudad in
the central region. Dirt streets, mostly native/thin Portuguese mixed race and
almost no concern about politics. Generally poor but a happy bunch otherwise.
Made connections in Brasilia (the capital). Somewhat new and modern. Only
the wealthy fly, so not representative of the majority population.
Zionism is a social disease
I recall our tour group
had an afternoon in Brasilia where we were free to be out on our own. Several government run buildings, with museums, were suggested sites for us to see. Bolsonaro had closed them for some reason. Our tour guide had not been told. My friends and I just spent the afternoon at the hotel bar.
The tour company has to locate infrastructure, such as hotels, restaurants, and bathrooms for their tourists. We didn't go to indigenous cities and villages, as a consequence.
Glad you interacted with them, Cap'n.

Sorry to see it happen.

One of the locals
On the way home from kyo wei yesterday, as we approached the last leg home, we encountered a young gator maybe 30 inches long crossing the street. The car racing ahead of us, in a largely residential area per usual, miraculously barely missed him. Like the proverbial old man from up north, driving slow, I had no trouble avoiding him. Seeing your lizard above, so to speak, I looked for a photo of the local 3 legged gator I had seen limping through the construction area on my street a few months ago. I have lost it or never took the photo. So here's an earlier one from last May.
I can't think of the correct terminology in English or Korean that identifies me or other Usians like me, in relation to local Korean community. Something like 本省人 in Taiwan. At the kyo wei 교회yesterday, Ms. So introduced me to a woman who knew us thirty years ago in the Clearwater community. Our appearances had changed so much...I think Ms. So is still easily recognizable but... So I thought yesterday was 本省人 Sunday but apparently it's next week, so now I have to attend 2 weeks in a row. Ms. So did the prep for wonderful lunch for about thirty people, which a team of Korean-American ladies then put together.
After the service, which reminded of a theme I had just read in an English translation of the Bhagavad Gita, I was seated at a table with three other herabojis 할아버지 grandfathers/ old men for lunch. So the whole experience will help me to practice my verbal skills which have faltered somewhat lately.
Now that Ms. So is up I can listen to your music selections, EL. Thanks!
己所不欲,勿施于人。
Good morning Soryang, glad the gator got away, so to
speak. Glad you're getting a chance to brush up on your verbal skills.

5 more Flock cameras
suddenly appeared in our neighborhood over the weekend. I have a 15-minute commute to work, and I now pass 6 of them. They are freakin' everywhere now, in these parts.
The one I'm most amused by is located in the driveway of a new hotel they built about half a mile from my office- focused on the driveway, parking lot, and entrance of the hotel, not on the street going by. I wonder how they can justify that as "increasing traffic violation revenue for the city"?
Most definitely not a fan. The TLAs, whichever ones are the actual customers for that data, are completely and utterly out of control.

Good mornng UFS. The flock cameras are becoming excessive.
I foresee the time when they will be openly in service of some TLA and the cities and towns, etc. where they are located will cease funding them but will be forbidden to remove them. I actually think that I've heard of at least one case of that already.

The site
is definitely under an unusually virulent attack this AM. Response times are sporadically very long, and then suddenly things will load as desired for 5 or 10 minutes, and then wham- the response time is long again. I suspect that there's nothing JtC can do about it, unfortunately. Someone, somewhere, wants the site to be sufficiently difficult to use so that people will migrate away, I think.
They are mistaken, whoever they are. At the very least, this reporter isn't going anywhere. Fuggem.
