10/26 Open Thread- Intersex Awareness Day
Some bearded dragons are intersex. This condition occurs in other animals as well. That includes humans, where an estimated 1 to 2 percent of all humans are intersex. Hermaphroditic animals and humans are technically a subset of intersex animals and humans. All banana slugs are not just intersex but hermaphroditic
A somewhat related factoid: Since days of yore there has been a type of sailing vessel known as a hermaphrodite brig. They're two masted, square rigged on the foremast, and schooner rigged on the main mast. That is a classic "schooner rig" with a triangular topsail above a gaff rigged main sail. I was going to use a picture of one for this column and discovered that use of the term is now limited to Europe, while modern US usage is to call such a vessel a "Brigantine", a word that used to be used for a different type of two masted vessel having a square rigged topsail and sometimes even a top gallant above the gaff rigged mainsail. (Of course, in large portions of the US, they use yawl as a pronoun instead of the noun applying to a two masted craft with the mizzen stepped abaft the rudder post, so what can you expect.) ![]()

Some people who died on this day:
The moment we begin to fear the opinions of others and hesitate to tell the truth that is in us, and from motives of policy are silent when we should speak, the divine floods of light and life no longer flow into our souls. Every truth we see is ours to give the world, not to keep for ourselves alone, for in so doing we cheat humanity out of their rights and check our own development.

Hey, good morning
.
Happy to hear Lula eked out a victory in Brazil in spite of the
interferences by 3 letter US spooks. Neither trumpet nor
Bolsonaro accept the results. The left still has a toe hold in
Latin America, which is good IMO. A balance is necessary. And
Iran wants to strengthen ties with them. Imagine China is pleased
with the results as well.
Thanks for helping with the sign-in snafu. Went with another browser
per your suggestion and it works!

Good morning...
As to your topic, there are apomictic plants that produce viable seed without fertilization.
In other news, I agree with QMS about the Brazilian election. Brazil saved it self from becoming a US colony ... for now.
Thanks for the OT and all the music!

On the way home from kyo wei yesterday, as we approached the last leg home, we encountered a young gator maybe 30 inches long crossing the street. The car racing ahead of us, in a largely residential area per usual, miraculously barely missed him. Like the proverbial old man from up north, driving slow, I had no trouble avoiding him. Seeing your lizard above, so to speak, I looked for a photo of the local 3 legged gator I had seen limping through the construction area on my street a few months ago. I have lost it or never took the photo. So here's an earlier one from last May.
I can't think of the correct terminology in English or Korean that identifies me or other Usians like me, in relation to local Korean community. Something like 本省人 in Taiwan. At the kyo wei 교회yesterday, Ms. So introduced me to a woman who knew us thirty years ago in the Clearwater community. Our appearances had changed so much...I think Ms. So is still easily recognizable but... So I thought yesterday was 本省人 Sunday but apparently it's next week, so now I have to attend 2 weeks in a row. Ms. So did the prep for wonderful lunch for about thirty people, which a team of Korean-American ladies then put together.
After the service, which reminded of a theme I had just read in an English translation of the Bhagavad Gita, I was seated at a table with three other herabojis 할아버지 grandfathers/ old men for lunch. So the whole experience will help me to practice my verbal skills which have faltered somewhat lately.
Now that Ms. So is up I can listen to your music selections, EL. Thanks!
