08/10 - is Revolutionary (open thread)
On August 10, 1585, Queen Elizabeth of England signed a treaty of support for the "Dutch Rebels", an outgrowth of the Water Geuzen. They had, at the time, no homeland but were fighting against Spain which occupied and ruled the low countries. Their ships were both their homes and their homeland. When when they were finally victorious, they founded the Dutch Republic. This pissed off Phillip the Sap so much that he started the Anglo-Spanish war and dropped a bundle on the the Spanish Armada.
On August 10, 1680, under the leadership of Po Pay or Pope', the indigenous pueblo people began a revolt against the Spanish colonial rule of Santa Fe de Nuevo México. This was a Spanish province generally located in the area currently known as New Mexico but larger than today's State. The Pueblo revolutionaries killed some 400 Spaniards and drove the remaining 2,200 settlers out of the province. The Spaniards were unable to reconquer the area for twelve years.
August 10, 1782 was the birthday of aptly named insurgent leader Vicente Guerrero.
The 10th of August is often used to denote the Storming of the Tuileries Palace in 1792, ending the French monarchy with the arrest of Louis XVI.
In between those last two events we find the effective date, so to speak, of the revolt of the 13 North American colonies against England. Though the US Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776, news of that event did not reach England until August 10, 1776.
On August 10, 1809, Quito declared its independence from Spain which it finally won on May 24, 1822

Good morning...
I like the idea of lazy day, but I've got too much to do.
There's more mowing after the regular doses of rain (for which I'm grateful). Not to mention the constant limb falls to pick up. Not too bad, but it is regular.
We've finished the first flush clean up of the equipment barn with it's 25 years of accumulation. So far so good, but yet more to do there as well.
At least it isn't boring.
Hope you all have a good day and work week. Thanks for the music and OT! I enjoyed the history lesson.

Good morning Lookout. Somewhat similar to you, I have no
official work week but, nonetheless, more than enough to do to keep me busy all week long. Hope that everything goes smoothly for you today and this week.

That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
Victory over Japan indeed
.
A whole day to commemorate signing a surrender document.
And to think it was not even necessary to nuke Hiroshima and
Nagasaki to get them to the table. More needless civilian deaths.
US had prior intelligence of Pearl Harbor but crickets. And it was
also Russia that defeated Japan aggression. But our popular spin
disregards those pesky facts. Doesn't fit the narrative ya' know.
And now they want nuclear weapons. What could go wrong?
Anyway, thanks for doing the Monday OT. Another week of strangeness upcoming!
Zionism is a social disease
Good morning Cap'n Q. I hear you loud and clear. China too
assisted in the defeat of Japan, and now they are the enemy of both the US and Japan for the crime of having become an economic powerhouse while eschewing fake democracy. Here's hoping that the civilized peoples of the globe survive the death throes of the empire.

Yeah, if uncle sam could just leave
.
that side of the world alone, we would all be much better off.
As Carlin said - just pull out and stop f'kin with them. But that
would leave us holding the bag. Exposing our impotency for all
the world to see. Doubt trumpet's ego would allow for that. Time
for a revolution for sure.

Good morning, el!
I gotta say, the subject of revolution just never gets old. I might get the experience of living through one.
The goal for the week is to finish 3 open cases, either by agreement, final hearing, or filing my withdrawal from them. The goal is to wipe the slate clean by September 1. We shall see. The biggest problem is to get my clients to respond to my calls and emails. Very aggravating.
Coffee tastes wonderful this morning, but regrettably, I need to finish it and get my sorry ass to the office.
Thanks for the OT, dear friend!

Good morning otc. Revolutions and revolutionaries always
seem to get more than their fair share of the good songs.

Oh my! The likelyhood of a deal looks extremely remote
as the dotard lives in an alternate reality.
Funny, but I don't recall Iran stealing US money
.
or freezing our assets. Delusional donnie thinks the world
owes him whatever he dreams up. Just because. What a sick joker.
Zionism is a social disease
Good afternoon humphry. As usual the orange dotard
spews lies and bullshit. The attack on the Cole was done by Al Qaeda the roadside bombs used by Iraqis defending their country from invasion and occupation were Iraqi, not Iranian, the number of protesters is vastly exaggggggerated, especially if you subtract all the insurgents and spies and any reparations for which would not go to him or the US, and ditto the alleged Many conflicts, etc. it is beyond fantasy, I'm surprised he doesn't include vandalizing the algae pool.

Back in a thread yesterday
Pluto was like
I will try to review the history as I see it.
1) Nixon's investigation/ impeachment/ resignation suggests a sort of slate-cleaning of the legacy of the Sixties.
2) Sometime in 1973 -- the US basically proclaims a faith-based dollar. The gold standard is never coming back.
3) July 1973 -- the Trilateral Commission is formed.
4) September 11, 1973 -- Salvador Allende kills himself, and a junta headed by Augusto Pinochet takes over Chile, with the blessings of Nixon, Kissinger, the CIA, and ITT corporation.
5) October 1, 1975 -- "The Crisis of Democracy," a collection written for the Trilateral Commission, was published. Samuel Huntington's piece in the collection argues for less democracy and more elite rule.
6) May 4, 1979 -- Margaret Thatcher becomes Prime Minister of the UK.
7) November 1980 -- Ronald Reagan is "elected" President. I am going to let Pluto review what happened next on this matter.
8) December 8, 1980 -- John Lennon is assassinated.
Basically the historical movement of the Seventies was what Antonio Gramsci called a "passive revolution." It involved the tightening of the ideological noose that was prepared for the working classes in the West and in its vassal states by the assassinations of the Sixties, by the genocide in rural southern Vietnam, and by COINTELPRO, the prep-work for the financialization of the world economy, for dollar hegemony, for the ideological consolidation of elite rule around neoconservatism in foreign policy and neoliberalism in economic policy, and if you don't like it, blame the other wing of the elite class than the one you openly support.
So, basically, history from the end of 1980 onward looks like a series of robberies. I don't really know how much you all think about the current impasse with Iran, but it looks to all of the commentators like 2026 will be more than just an ordinary "L" for the United States. What is dimly visible on the horizon with this Iran insanity is the end of this era of history. Oh, sure, the new era will suck for sure. But it will not be an unchallenged version of what M. Shahid Alam called "Imperialism II."
"The US empire’s downfall comes at a time of late stage capitalism when more than 99 percent of the public are effectively disenfranchised while factions of reactionary billionaires vie for control." -- Conor Gallagher
Good afternoon Cass, thanks for dropping in and posting that
timeline.
