Saturday Open Thread - 5/16/26: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good people! I hope all of you are doing well.
I am winding down my law practice, and when the wife of a PI attorney called me to get a divorce going, I referred her to an attorney friend, declined it. Why? Well, this was a wife married to a PI attorney. My friend I referred her to specializes in rich folks divorces, whereas I do not have rich folks anywhere in my area.
My attorney pal who only takes rich folks divorce cases replied to my call and said he had just watched a video of an exorcism in a deposition. I told him my poor folks cases usually involve sex with pigs, dogs, cattle, etc... Millionaires are different.
JtC went to town and filled up my car at a Shell station within view of the sheriff's office. Turns out some 39 yr old man stuck the gas nozzle into his truck, got back in his truck, was found dead in his truck at least 4 days later. Nobody noticed. Autopsy is required, nice 39 yr old, nice family. JtC went there, filled up my car for me, and was another customer who did not notice.
Would you tapped on the dark tinted window to check on the guy?
Diesel reached $5.00. Food prices are pretty much holding, but shelves are empty here and there.
As we shopped, we were treated to the same music JtC played while preparing dinner last night.
That little girl could have been me.
And for the young man who died, a tribute to a dead girl is nevertheless a tribute to the dead.
This is an open thread, open to any and all info your wish to share with us.
Let 'er rip!

Good idea defer a case to another 'specialist'
.
Life is too short to take on unnecessary baggage.
The Allmans are always a soothing influence.
So how long does it take for a dead guy to fill-up
his truck? Must be an ancient Chinese proverb to
cover that...
Thanks for the OT!

Hey, Cap'n!
Just as I sail away from old work, a new niche of legal practice fell in my lap.
If a subdivision lot owner with 3 lots wishes to combine a couple of them, HOA rules, and also county ordinances must be followed. The only attorney who does that is closing his private practice. I have been approached by a commissioner and our county judge to step in. Work from home, no court appearances. Easy peasy.
This month has been a breezy one. Not hot, so far. I may do a bit of weed clipping today.
Enjoy your day, my friend!

Q you've been reminding me
...of old song lyrics or poems lately. This one is probably from East Asia Student (translation). I had it in some more recent notes. From Zhang Ruoxu, Spring River Flower Moon Night
人生代代無窮已,江月年年祇相似。
Life goes on endlessly, generation after generation, likewise, the river moon year after year.
不知江月待何人?但見長江送流水。
For whom does the river moon wait? Only to see the Yangtze River's flowing waters.
not really one of those pithy idiom's. I came across one earlier today from Korea.

Good morning...
Glad you're moving toward retirement...highly recommended.
Wonder if Trump plans to start attacking Iran again. I hope Xi read him the riot act which may give him pause. We can hope...at least for now.
Gas is pushing $4/gal, and food is going higher and higher. Coffee is about $12+/lb.
Trade day was sparse due to the Hwy 11 yard sale. None the less it was a pleasant stroll and saw many friends. Heard a fellow say he spent $100 on gas to see a bunch of junk on the yard sale. I guess one persons junk is another's treasure.
I washed our dirty cars this week and they needed it. Pollen season is pretty much over.
Well hope everyone has a good day. Thanks for the OT!

Good morning, LO!
I specifically noticed that my coffee price had stayed put, and that diesel was up to $5 per gal., regular is $3.89. It is a matter of time when meals will get very creative.
I noticed fresh vegetables and fruit were much sparser than usual. One variety of tomatoes, not the usual 4.
I have to finish up a handful of cases, and I am taking no new ones. I am doing transactional stuff that requires document production, no court appearances. I should be done by August.
Not sure what to do with my office furniture. There is not a market for that at yard sales.
Well, I should scout out some news headlines to see if we started another war somewhere.
Have a great day, dear friend!

Good morning OTC, thanks for the OT and tunes. Good luck and
godspeed toward retirement. It is possible to simply climb into one's vehicle and immediately die there, but, just in case, they should check the pump handle and door handle for Novichok, it can pop up anywhere, antyime, you know.
Did morning chhores, went to farmers' market, put the stuff away and replaced a light in our range hood, roughly an hour of total hassle and aggravation, one of the all time two or three worst engineered products I have ever worked on in my life.
Trump is now talking VZ for 51st state, having already proposed Greenland and Canada. There is something telling about that narrative, but I'm not sure what. Mebbe he should focus on keeping the 27th state above water instead, after all, nobody will see his golden statue if its submerged.
be well and have a good one

If the IDF xan, with precision, kill that last leader of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack, then isn't that proof that killing thousands of Gazan civilians is genocide? Just asking for a friend...
Trump is obsessed with expanding our territory. I expect Cuba to be in line on his wish list.
I want all those Trumpers who heard him admit he didn't give their financial struggles a single thought are still faithful to him?
Gonna watch the last two of four prequels to Planet of the Apes today. Interesting parallels to today's world. Virus and vaccines gone awry.
Chores done, time to relax and enjoy your day, dear friend!

Faithful Trumpers
Believe it or not, I know such a loyal Trumper. She’s a former neighbor, stroke victim whose garbage and kitty litter I take out every 3 weeks or so. We’ve agreed to disagree but still manage to touch on the subject each visit. I can tell how Fox News is projecting by what she says. Soon after the bombing of the Iranian schoolgirls, she informed me that Iranians are the ones who’re killing innocent civilians. I also heard that every word that comes from their mouths are lies. At last visit, she said Trump would never quit fighting until Iran agreed to give up nuclear bombs. When I explained why they’ve never tried to build one, she shouted “That’s not true!” Fox News will never tell her that Trump doesn’t care about our finances, and if they haven’t said it she won’t believe it. She can’t be too mean to me because there’s no one else to remove her trash. And I’d worry about her cats if anything happened to her. In the end it doesn’t matter because she doesn’t socialize enough to influence anyone and Oregon votes blue no matter who. But I find myself arguing w/her too much in my mind.

Hey, anya!
I have only brought up the subject with some 40ish folks who are hip to the trip of social media, not oldsters who sit and watch Fox News all day, every day.
You are a good person and even better neighbor to help this indoctrinated woman who will never know the truth about the world in which she she exists. That is just sad, isn't it?
Enjoy your weekend, chica, and help this poor old lady when you can. She is still a human, and a neighbor, after all.

Good thoughts
Yes I guess so (bless her heart?). I go along with what you’re saying. Maybe a bit less emphasis on “oldster” as she’s six years younger than me.

How about
age progressed? Lol!
Trump came down hard on Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy and, sure enough, Cassidy was beaten in the primary yesterday. Trump still pulls his immense weight. I was surprised by that election result.
And I read a headline that Trump said it out loud in an interview that we are in this conflict with Iran for Israel's benefit. Our soldiers need to know that they are fighting and dying for Israel.

An interesting tidbit found today
.
The Chinese built an AI data center into a semi submersible
platform and sunk it in the middle of a wind turbine field off
shore. The seawater does the cooling and the turbines power
the processors. Very clever. It is working so well, they plan to
triple the capacity. Innovation which makes tons of sense.
The investment in a sustainable future is their modus operandi.
Zionism is a social disease
And totally beyond ours.
AI centers are gonna ruin cities and farm lands. I should re-word that to "are ruining cities".

Hola, GOM amiga.
I am a bit confused, and this time it ain't old age. Exactly how did that 39 y.o. die? He didn't breathe gas fumes from your account. Sudden natural causes? Weird! Scratching my wrinkled head. Glad to hear JtC is doing so well, he went and got your wheels gassed up.
Also, that you are getting closer and closer to the retirement goal. Thumbs up!! Or as a departed Floridian sage sang, "Fins Up!" Man, gas prices are climbing here. Diesel is now hitting $6/gallon in places. As a lifelong enviro who can walk to certain destinations c/o living downtown, it's no big deal. However, folks still have to eat. Living out of your gas guzzler is no picnic, either. So, ABB tunes always a hit here, tho I'll admit: I want Duane AB on mine. Anywho, you and JTC stay safe. Rec'd!!

Hey, Obf!
No reported cause of death on the young man. He was noy a criminal, no history of drug use, just a handsome guy who died. Not fumes, not heat. I may call my pal, the Sheriff, and get some info.
Retirement is way complicated. Keeping the office going at thousands per month at the same time taking in no new income cases is very tricky.
Anyway, sorry to hear your fuel prices are rising. Seems to fit into the plan set by the WEF. We have no say in the matter, no influence whatsoever.
Hubby is almost back to normal. Instead of working like an 18 yr old, he works like a 30 yr old. Hey, I am 74 yrs old. I kind of like that 30 yr old guy thing! Lol!
Enjoy your weekend, chica!

Dystopian Daily's caption for this post is as follows:
"Leftists keep telling you Democrats are right-wing fascism enablers, and here they are attacking progressives at a time when the country is literally collapsing into 1930s Germany."
But we are not collapsing into 1930s Germany! If it were 1930s Germany, the US economy would be in a lot better shape than it is fact is. What we have now is not "fascism," nor is it "1930s Germany," although there is some mimicry of the fascism of the inter-war period going on now. Rather, there are two economic models for capitalism at this very late date. The one that looks somewhat like fascism is actually on the decline, whereas 1930s Germany was expanding. This model therefore looks more like rule by home-invasion burglars, or like parasites devouring a host organism, than like the tyranny of Mussolini, Hitler, or Franco. There is no concept of society anymore, unlike with the last century; rather, what enslaves the mind under today's "fascism" are brutal notions of "self-interest," which explains why our society's most apathetic frogs have not noticed that they are being boiled.
Sure, the Trump regime was originally "MAGA," but it is obvious at this point that this was a ruse to get elected, Trump does not care about America at all, and the point of policy is the opportunities it presents for inside traders. Get what you can, before the global carcass is picked clean.
The other model on display is that of the Chinese, whose main flaw appears to be overproduction. This is why the Chinese do not yet appear to be on the road to replacing capitalism with the world of Cormac McCarthy's The Road. Neither the American nor the Chinese models of capitalism appear to be in any serious transition to postcapitalism, and this is more generally the problem.
"It's time for a revolution" -- Frank Zappa
Good morning, Cass!
My definition of fascism is very simplistic. It is government doing the bidding of corporations. The tactics used vary. Capitalism has gone past its' sell by date.
I stay mentally and emotionally disengaged from politics. Let's see how a new and shiny left looks.
Keep us briefed on it, ok?
