01/26 Open Thread - Australia Day
On this day in 1788 the British First Fleet sailed into what is now Port Jackson to establish Sydney and start seizing land and colonizing Australia. This is celebrated by many of the colonist's descendents and later arrivals as Australia Day Like victims of colonization everywhere, many of the descendents of the original indigenous population instead commemorate this event with alternate commemorations such as Invasion Day, Day of Mourning, or Survival Day Promises have been made to them over the years and, as may well be expected, broken.
On this day in 1564, The Council of Trent which was putatively "ecumenical" firmed up and refined various points of Catholic dogma, ceremony and ritual, including its supremacy, while also condemning and othering the protestants and their differences with the true church. Hey good morning
Awoke to a white blanket covering the ground
,weighting down the branches on the bushes
Heard some snow plow at 3:30 banging out front.
Upon investigation, some mystery man was plowing
the driveway. Mana from heaven! The bank at the road
was about 3 foot tall. Shoved aside. Less shoveling required.
A path to the shop is next. Another adventure.
Those brit colonizers sure were busy way back when.
Not so much now. They would rather play banksterism.
Thanks for the OT!

Good morning Cap'n Q. Sends shivers down my backbone,
as they say. Lucky you getting the driveway plowed, but still a lot to do I'm sure. The other day I realizdd the reason that Brit cooking is so notoriously bad is that they ran around conquering places like India where the locals knew how to cook, so they never learned themselves. Yes, banksterism, but as we are seeing here, financialization can only take one so far, then what?
Nice picture, but confusing. I always thought a 2CV was a Citroen, not a Ford.

2CV is a new beast to me
.
This is a Ranger, 4 cylinder with a 6' bed.
Need to load some lead pigs in the back
for traction (rear wheel drive) to get over the
drift ahead of the bumper.
Happy birthday Lucinda Williams (local talent).

Good cold morning...
It was 18F this AM, and likely to remain below freezing all day. However the sun is shining and the solar system will help heat the house. We did get a very light dusting on the decks, but no snow cover here.
Tomorrow is predicted to be even colder, but climbing into the 40's later in the day.
QMS be careful in the snow! Thanks, el, for the OT and all the music!

The jig is almost Irish

and the vid is interesting
phasing into and out of wire outlines.
Probably won't challenge the snow mounds too much
today. We have one 4 wheeler dug-out, so can escape
if necessary. Prefer to take it in small chunks.
May get some more snow later today.

Good morning LO, thanks for the tune. I detect some
Scotts-Irish there, almost Appalachian. Not a digeridoo in sight. Of course, the prisoners exported to Australia did include a lot of such folk, "transported for life".
Good luck with the weather

Thanks for the quotes and link. Makes me think of San Clemente
allowing ICE to set up surveillance cameras to watch and record the beach(es) there, allegedly to detect arriving pangas from down Mexico way. A quick look revealed only one that has ever made the news, one, carrying 14 people.

We're on the back side
of the cold snap- it was 11degF this morning, headed into the 40s.
Watched the home team collapse in the sportsball game yesterday, as expected. At least it'll be safer whole driving to my office now. When the Broncos are still playing, the out-of-state talent attempting to drive in the snow presents a clear and present danger to all noncombatants who have the misfortune to be on the same road- and I literally have to drive by the player entrance to their training facility to get to my grindstone.
Meanwhile, here's our Cullen Skink recipe:
We used smoked salmon, because you generally can't get smoked haddock anywhere in the US (outside of coastal New England). And it is nearly as good. Feel free to toss in a titch of garlic in the sauté stage, as well...
Twice bitten, permanently shy.
Sounds good
.
semi-smashed taters and fish - yum
Amazing the patriots lucked-out to prevail
over the broncos (not much skill involved)
seahawks and rams played a hell of a match
watched the highlights this AM. Cooking-up
some red onions and red beans in beef broth
today, watching the back hoes make mountains
of snow around the driveways of neighbors.
Rural entertainment.

Good morning UFS, thanks for reading. I watched no
sportsball yesterday, but am glad that Denver's demise made your roads safer and glad your weather is easing.
Thanks for the recipe, but I don's see myself trying it anytime soon. Never had haddock, and except for sashimi, prefer my salmon fresh off the boat and grilled, most other fish ditto, excepting, of course, baja style fish tacos.

Great collection of music
From a wide selection of genres too. And thanks for the OT.
Neither Russia nor China is our enemy.
Neither Iran nor Venezuela are threatening America.
Cuba is a dead horse, stop beating it.
Good morning e1, glad you like the tunes.
Lately I've been listening to a bit more "Paris Cafe" jazz, so Grapelli's birthday was right down that alley. The rest, as usual, was a selection based on who was born or died.

Good morning, el!
County offices closed for the day, so I shut down my office, stayed at home. I didn't plan it, so have no home projects to keep me busy. That give me time to browse the internet.
Something strange is going on. The busiest stores around are the Dollar stores. I saw 2 family members of one of the wealthiest families in the county filling up their cart at Dollar General.
A middle aged man who works in construction who needs a divorce, and mind you, he has a home that is paid for, and a vehicle that is paid for, but he told me it would take him 2 1/2 months to come up with an $800 partial payment on his retainer. I am hearing this all the time now.
Meanwhile, this war on illegal immigrants is starting to break down into a racial divide. How many white rwnjs are sounding like giving up their guns is worth it to rid the country of all those dark skinned menaces to our society?
We are being perfectly distracted from whatever is coming.
Well, happy Monday, dear friend, and thanks for the OT.
"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981
Something I try not to think about -
1) Trump seems determined to attack Iran, at least a decapitation attempt
2) Iran has made it clear that if there is any attack it will attack US assets in the area and Israel
3) Israel has nukes and a willingness to take the world down with it if need be
4) If Israel had notice that the US would strike Iran at a specific time, would they try a pre-emptive nuclear strike?
5) Is Trump likely to give Israel such notice?
Be well and try not to think about it

Let's add this into the mix, shall we?
I keep reading little snippets here and there that the Zionists have a go-to safe haven, a brand new place for all of them to be safe and sound. Strategically located Somaliland. That brand, spanking new "country" not formally recognized by anyone on the planet but the Israeli gummint. If this is true, maybe they would rather go there and not drop nukes and destroy said planet?
I mean, they could say they misread the map and that Somaliland is their ancestral home.
Bibi loves to draw new maps, after all!

I can't determine if this is AI generated or real?
I guess that people
are hurting his poor widdle princess fee-fees. Bummer.
He'd do well to remember that that "One of ours, all of yours" slogan from Noem's podium has a certain level of (how can I say this delicately?) historical precedent behind it.
Speaking strictly for myself here: If the shoe fits, you should expect to be asked to wear it, little man.

Arnaud Betrand has some great posts today
Much better than Fox and Gordon Chang and the WH post on how China is going to consume Canada or whatever.
I knew about the Battle of Khalkhin-Gol (also known as "Nomonhan"). He has an interesting post on this also. He also has a link to a video appearance with Ben Norton that I haven't watched.
Seeing the reference to Lady Zhen and Cao Pi got me started. I didn't know who they were, but had heard of Cao Cao. Thanks for the OT EL!
edits- finally got the last X post loaded right. If you look at the third X post above the subject matter is South Korea's exit from the first island chain strategy, to more neutral military role vis a vis China.
己所不欲,勿施于人。
South Korea is taking a sensible approach
.
to potential regional conflict.
Take care of your own territory first.
Have noticed certain Baltic states doing the same.
Smaller counties are recognizing the importance of
independent security in light of the hegemony's desire
to use other nation/states as proxies for their agenda.
Even western European countries are beginning to balk
at the concept. This will expose the US as all bluster with
little force (I hope).

Gabor Mate is depressed
Here he is on Briahna Joy Gray's show:
1) If "the Left" fails to resist, this is because the wounds of "the Left" are for the most part self-inflicted. They could have started thinking big: startirg their own schools, universities, businesses (even), unions of free producers, libraries, alternative political parties, and so on. Instead, they all decided to put their energies into the Democratic Party, with results that were predictable and visible to all after 2016.
2) "The Left" doesn't have a clue as to what will replace capitalism. Anyone on "the Left" that doesn't tacitly assume that the capitalist system is an eternal, unchanging entity (and there are extremely few of those) relies upon the assumption that a post-capitalism will arise naturally, relying (if they are still literate) upon a famous quote by the Karl Marx of 1871:
Sorry, but when applied to today's situation this stuff is nonsense, and what we need at this point is a competition of ready-made utopias, or how about we just start a teevee show: "America's Got Utopia"? It's gotten to that point. Maybe we could put Simon Cowell through a crash course in the literature before putting him on the panel.
3) There WAS "Left" resistance, in the form of Gaza encampments in the universities, in the spring of 2024. The resistance was -- in my estimation, given that I visited one of the smaller ones -- composed mostly of young students who spent most of their energies furiously trying to get the political education they WEREN'T being given by their universities. Said resistance was crushed by the universities on the orders of the Zionist billionaires on their boards of trustees. I told a few participants in the encampment I visited that what they needed to do was to engage a publicity campaign in their larger community, but, instead of this, what America received was two political parties, both of them pro-genocide, rule by Zionist billionaires, and the crushing of the encampments, from which America has still not recovered. "The Left" could have done something better than sitting on their butts, fingers firmly planted up their noses, while all this was going on.
4) Gabor Mate speaks toward the end of this video of an epidemic of loneliness, and its connection to neoliberalism. What happened was that America bought into neoliberalism, because it thought that, as the Seventies became the Eighties, neoliberalism was a way of extending the party, for themselves as individuals. What it means now, as the new Roaring Twenties deepens, is that neoliberalism is not a valid utopia, in the same sense in which AI is neither a companion, nor a friend, nor a sex-doll, nor an audience.
"It hasn't been okay to be smart in the United States for centuries" -- Frank Zappa
Good afternoon, Cass. Thanks for the information
and the video. The US left is pretty much dead, and the zombie left seems to have no ideas beyond hope that the Dems win adn then suddenly become enlightened. Not really much hope there.

One wonders how permanent S. Korea's exit from the first island chain trategy will hold up. For everybody's sake I hope it is permanent.
