Saturday Open Thread - 12/20/25: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good people! I hope you are all enjoying your weekend and reading The Epstein Files!
I have promised a lawyer from Bryan-College Station that I would let him know if his 78 yr old cancer stricken, bad knees, bad bladder, almost deaf, lawyer Dad was making an ass of himself and maybe setting himself up for a malpractice suit. So, after 10 minutes of watching the man conducting a direct examination of an expert witness, I felt good about him. Later that ay, I asked the attending court clerk how it went, and she said my old, esteemed friend twisted a knife in the back of his young opposing counsel. (Court-speak for getting a win so decisive that appeals would be a waste of time and money.)
I resist suggested youtube videos, that is, until I succumb. Glad I did. No. 1 Billboard hits from 1960-1969. I graduated and headed to college early, so this list got me thinking of where I was, who I was with, what I was doing as I went from 3rd grade to University. All the clips are just a few seconds long, but you can always find them in full length on youtube. I admit to hunting up numerous songs that I had forgotten how much I loved.
Anyway, pick through, see if it brings back your memories of a better time.
FWIW, we named our stray cat Pour Boy. Spelled "pour" like we Texans pronounce "poor". He has let me stroke his back 3 times this week. He has been running away at my approach for a couple of months. Baby steps.
Well, this is the last OT I write before Christmas. I hope the next OT is full of warm and lovely holiday happenings, friends!
This is an open thread, open to all things any and all of you wish to share with the rest of your friends. We are all eyes and ears!

Good morning, good people!
Ordinarily, I would not be happy to read details of a pedo ring, but I make an exception with the Epstein Files.
Your turn, friends, so let 'er rip!

this is an oldie with a seasonal flavor ..
Thanks for the OT!

What a fun song, Cap'n!
Music has a profound effect on individuals, religion, and society at large. Even the remotest indigenous tribes chanted for blessings of rain, food, warmth, calm, etc...At some point, music turned to praise not only the gods, but the self-appointed ones, such as emperors and kings.
We have the music of today because Giuseppe Verdi had the balls to write operas about everyday people. I am surprised the king let him live. Music of the people never returned to existing solely for the benefit of a f'king royal.
However, I am perfectly ok with the King of Rock and Roll, or The Queen of Soul.
Enjoy your weekend, dear friend!

Good morning...
Have not started any of the Epstein Files. One of the talking heads said, at best they will confirm what we already know. I'm sure TPTB will not allow his Mossad and CIA links to be revealed, and my understanding is they are heavily redacted with many files NOT released.
It was a chilly stroll through trade day this AM. Saw and visited with several friends. One of my old friends said when he moved away, "I don't what to live where trade day is the social event of the week." Fortunately, I do.
Gas is down to $2.50, but groceries are going up. I guess finances are a balancing act...especially as the dollar loses value.
Been seeing lots of deer and turkey. They are gathered up this time of year. I need to get the big field mowed before turkeys start nesting.
Well, thanks for the OT, and have a great weekend!

Remind me again
Is trade day something like a farmers market but with local artist booths and food carts?
We have a Saturday Market here under one of the bridges with a lot of everything, including street musicians and troubadours. But it doesn't go on year round.
Neither Russia nor China is our enemy.
Neither Iran nor Venezuela are threatening America.

Trade day is more like a 3rd world market...

(25 min) You compete with dealers like this who shop to resale. Several people resale on ebay. I go to get things we need and will use.
There are chickens, goats, turkeys, produce, clothes (new and used), even computers and coin dealers.
Also people will bargain. How much is this? I'm asking $10. Would you take $8? kinda adds to the fun. If the deal is reasonable I don't haggle, I pay. However, if it seem high I will bargain.
Everyone from the local judge to semi-homeless folks come.
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Got it
We called them swap meets out here on the left coast. Used to be held at the local drive-in theaters. But they are all gone now.
Neither Russia nor China is our enemy.

Good afternoon, LO!
I had to grocery shop this morning, saw a small crowd shopping at a few booths set up on the courthouse lawn for the once a month Town Square event. Geegaws, tee shirts, honey, wind chimes, holiday decorations, etc...In other words, junk except for the pure honey. The event is a draw for out of towners mostly. It is of little socializing value. You are lucky.
I bought 6 grocery items, 2 on sale. Beef is sky high while beef cattle prices are at historic lows. The middleman rules. My impulse buy was a camo shirt for JtC. The grocery store always has 1 small carousel of clothes. Hey, it is Christmas, after all! He is sensitive to cold due to the chemo.
While we might save money on the drive, the arrival to the grocery store is pure sticker shock. People on fixed or low income resort to the cheapest junk food on the shelves. It breaks my heart to see what is in their shopping carts.
I watched a buck and two does grazing last evening. They hung around for several hours. We don't have turkeys in East Texas. We have to go to The Hill Country to get our wild turkey fix.
Well, get that mowing over and done until spring, dear friend! Sounds like you are having a well-deserved pleasant weekend!

Food morning otc, et. al. I read a lot of headlines or
headline + topical paragraph without reading further, especially if the headline includes some form of :study says" One such was that food is getting more caloric but less nutritious. Sure it would be interesting to see exactly what that is about and how and why, but it stands to reason given the food industry in this country, including the condition of so much o the soil used for growing crops. Part of that, too, is the question of What is food? After all, the guy who said
or words to thet effect, clearly intended to distinguish food from stuff you can put in your mouth and swallow. I think that the basis for the article's assertion is likely to be largely due to a confusion between those two things, but can't say because I only read the head.
Learning the hard way: Last night we had a series of quakes, part of a swarm that has been identified as centered near nearby San Ramon and going on for a while now. Quake measurements in the Bay Area come out almost instantly as "X" strength, followed by various corrections/adjustments over the next few hours as "X +or- Y" and finally, after a decent amount of time, as "Z" Over the years one develops a feel, largely of thresholds (greater than 3, over 5, or up around 7, etc.) Nowdays, however, these reports come out in Mercalli as opposed to Richter scale. There is no handy conversion like there is for centigrade to fahrenheit, or such because they measure entirely different things. So, the first ones we actually noticed came out as 3.8, 3.7 and 4.0, so I now know what those feel like which, it seems, is the only way one will ever be able to define or learn whatthehell that scale is.
Thanks for the videos. I was listening to an all 50s station the other day, back when there was pretty much only one "hit parade" instead of one for each genre, which was interesting as wee the memories it brought forth. Example, earlyJohnny Cash followwed by a couple of do wop songs followed by some Sarah Vaughan. Heh.
be well and have a good one
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
Yeah, I remember those days
Before FM even. Lotsa "Crooners" while Elvis was changing the vibe, but was still a "Crooner", only with moves.
Neither Russia nor China is our enemy.
Neither Iran nor Venezuela are threatening America.

Good afternoon, el!
When some billionaire who owns pesticide-drenched industrial farms starts telling me what to eat, my reaction is not polite.
Yeah, "food" nowadays lends itself to various interpretations. One day, I expect those food growing labs to catch fire, like all the meat processing plants did. Ya know, shit just happens.
If changing quake calculations and Common Core math was necessary, why didn't we change to the metric system like the rest of the world? Seems like every which place you look, we are kept ignorant on purpose. Eat ze bugs!
I have to poison a couple of fire ant beds that are close to the house while Pour Boy is out and about. I don't want him thinking it is a snack.
I do remember The Hit Parade radio station. Even the video I posted featured multiple genres. Rock and Rollers did dig Marty Robbins and Percy Faith. I just enjoyed listening to that video and thought some Boomers here might get a kick out of it.
Take good care and enjoy your weekend, dear friend!

Great compilation, otc
Walked me through the years with fond memories of my worn out cars and 4 & 8 tract tapes.
Thanks for the OT.

Good afternoon, e1!
So glad you enjoyed the songs from days gone by! I ran across it very late in the evening, but once it started, I just couldn't stop it.
Yeah, sports cars, school dances, and school dress code right at the time mini-skirts were all the rage! And remember when bell bottom jeans hit the scene?
I hope you have an enjoyable weekend planned and enacted, dear friend!

Hi OtC!
Thanks for today's odds n ends! I hope all are doing well.
I was looking around for stories concerning the nuclear weapons posture of our allies, and came across this surprise related to the US nuclear industry, safety, proliferation, etc. Doesn't seem to have gotten much publicity.
Roll up, roll up for your free plutonium

If one wants to sell...
Sorry I mixed up these posts. It's true what you are saying, the Chinese are ahead on energy production.
If I could be certain this was about some half baked energy plan that would be better than what the plan to release all that plutonium could really portend.

Good afternoon, soryang!
How many ways can this plutonium giveaway go wrong? Does ANYONE trust all these really good folks running big corporations, mostly tax free, to do the right and honorable and responsible thing?
There is a core of willfully deaf, dumb, and blind MAGAS that still haven't figured out Trump was put where he is to do exactly what he is told.
Well, thanks for bringing us this super cheery news! Lol!
Enjoy your weekend, dear friend!

try to sell...
...some legacy chip abroad that is used in a household appliance it's a national security issue, for which the world trade system and economy must be turned upside down.
...on the other hand, give away enough plutonium to make 2000 warheads to one or more of your personal friends...no problem. This material is supposed to be the most carefully guarded material in the world. What the hell, they can ship it to a warehouse, and hire some security guards, until they figure out how to use it.
To say it's not so good to hear, is an understatement. OTC, sorry I brought it up. I'm glad you see how AFU this is.

Nothing to be sorry about, friend.
I think we have a responsibility to lay out all the bad news so that people can be aware, and if possible, be prepared in a sudden crisis.
"Hey, I didn't see it coming!" is both a tragic and preventable state of mind.
Israel weaponized pagers, so imagine what can be weaponized with a bit of plutonium...
In the meantime, let's protest over re-naming the Kennedy Center. (I do resent Trump for doing that to the memory of JFK.)

Enjoying a beautiful sunset just now. Hope to put together
a kindly OT for Wednesday after making some grub.
Looks like mashed taters, gravy and local sausage so far.
Will see how that turns out.
