10/13 - Disaster Risk Reduction Day

Okay today is the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. Note the emphasis on the word "disaster" That word can be a bit relative; were I to severely injure myself such that I was hospitalized for an extended period and then wound up seriously weakened and immobile I might consider it a disaster and the people next door might or might not consider it "a pity", there's no way I'd get any disaster relief. Accordingly, since this is obviously a UN holiday, we should only consider large scale disasters to qualify. Contemplating reducing the risk of natural disasters, however, takes us into strange territory. Time was that you could reduce the risk of nearby volcanic eruptions by making a sacrifice to the volcano god usually in the form of a human that you tied up and threw into the volcano. Similarly you could reduce the risk of a disastrous flood by tying somebody up and tossing them in the river to mollify the river god and you could placate Neptune by tying somebody up and tossing them into the ocean to prevent tsunamis but those are very specific disasters that have specific gods, but as far as I know there's no earthquake god to appease, so how can you reduce the risk of an earthquake?
Beyond all that, gods are pretty unreliable so it is better to seek human means. You can certainly reduce the risk of disastrous damage to a given coastal neighborhood in hurricane territory by not rebuilding the damn thing there after next hurricane knocks it down. Try not to build housing, offices, hotels, and shopping centers in river beds, floodplains, avalanche zones, unstable cliffs and desert washes. All in all, however, natural disasters generally seem hard to control. The risk of some man-made disasters like train wrecks can theoretically be minimized, but that is an illusion because the risk reduction runs afoul of Adam Smith's sacred invisible hand and the need to maximize profits vastly outweighs the mere desire to minimize risks. Then there are disasters like Macron, Ursula von der Leyen, and all the rest. For every elected or unelected leader there is an ample population segment which considers them to be a disaster. I don't see how the risk of disastrous leaders can be reduced, for leaders, both overt and concealed are unavoidable, and those who bubble up to the top are what they are.
It is also Indigenous Peoples Day and Native American Day. Indigenous people will be at risk of disaster so long as they remain free. I know of only one group of Indigenous people who are free from the trials and travails brought upon such people by invaders and outsiders. You know who you are and look what happened to the Native Americans for guidance. Don't let anybody land on your turf, shoot them if they run and stab hem if they stand, and don't trust anybody. Well, there is one exception. You can always trust the US Government, just ask any American Indian.
Did I mention that it is International Plain Language Day? Right. Look where it got Lenny Bruce.

The US has become its own disaster...
no volcanoes, earthquakes, nor fires required. Just takes a cabal of oligarchs to purchase the politicians to do their bidding.
We're not used to being treated the way we treat others. China is playing their "Trump card".

Shocking U.S. Defeat: China's Rare Earth Checkmate Is NOT What Media Pretends.
While western media pretends the latest Chinese announcement about export licensing restrictions is all about the trade war with the US, the real story is all about weapons. After the US emptied its stockpiles in Ukraine and West Asia, Beijing now strikes the USA where it seriously hurts: the ability to replenish their armaments. The US is now in a serious pickle, and the fact that they deflect from this, tells a lot.
Instead of a disaster, might be a blessing to the world.
Take care and thanks for the OT and all the music!

Good morning Lookout. Thanks for the video. That is
very much the US' dilemma. We had hoped to get our hands on some rare earths from deposits in Ukiestan, but they're largely in Donbas. We cut a deal with Volodomyr the First to get ights to extract them anyway, but I don't see that paying off.

Morning - it probably means
the
DefenseWar Department funded the creation and operation of the plant with one of their minority loan programs. It is a very common practice and may include technology transfer from government funded research. I have known many couples who place a majority of ownership of a company up to 100% for better loan terms. Single status does not negatively impact availability of loan.Still yourself, deep water can absorb many disturbances with minimal reaction.

It came across as an insult to women,
as though we are incompetent, have no place in industry, much less producing war materiel.
Who but right wingers gives an damn if a company is owned by a man OR a woman? Why is it worth a mention when the news is about a tragedy?
"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981
Nobody with a functioning brain does. However,
if there is any hint of any DEI initiative having ever been involved in any way in the founding, funding, or operation of the company: the MAGA-types will howl to the moon for the rest of time about how "See? DEI clearly caused the tragedy!!!!1!1!!".
Doesn't matter if it is germane or not: if a woman, or a person of color, or an immigrant, or an LGBTQLMNOP being ever even freakin' walked through the front door of the business, the rightwingers will say "Well, there's your problem right there!", and turn their minds off as they pat themselves on the back about their Rightness. In keeping with the journalist's creed of "if it bleeds, it leads", you can expect the DEI tub to be thumped whenever possible in the media- it'll get more rightwing eyes on the story. They loves them some pandering, they do.
It is just the way it is. That is just one of the many Pavlovian triggers for the rightwing deadenders, and it is a doozy.
Twice bitten, permanently shy.
How we emotionally interpret a statement
is our own choice. As a woman business owner of multiple successful businesses of various sizes over the years, I am not insulted. The only time my competence was questioned due to gender identity was by a local group of silicon valley tech retirees to their detriment.
Did not notice the phrase in the early articles of the tragedy. Are the articles referenced from a newsfeed or sources you regularly read? My interest is genuine, not snarky.
What is the definition of a right-winger? It seems to be a moving target. Are these right wing tendencies a gun owner, anyone who participates in capitalism practices such as owning a business, employs non-union employees, has attended a church service in the past, supports traditional marriage by participation in one, earns income from investment or rental property, is not a union member, does not support violent disobedience towards governmental bodies, does not unquestionably support violent disobedience to governmental bodies, anyone participating in the criminal justice system - my confusion grows.
Still yourself, deep water can absorb many disturbances with minimal reaction.

MAGAS. War hawks.
Sites like Gateway Pundit, The Western Journal. I skim them often for breaking news, try my best to ignore their slant or opinions. This was always in the headlines of their articles.
I have enjoyed being self-employed since I was a teen, working for a company here and there for about 7 years.
I do alright.

thanks for the definition being used in this discussion
Might not have noticed MAGA is not a monolithic group and has a significant portion of non-foreign intervention proponents. This division has been intensified with the Charlie Kirk public execution and FBI leading control of narrative. War Hawks are well represented across the political spectrum. It is one or their methodologies for full control of our country regardless of public opinion and voting patterns.
Those two publications can be provocative, but do provide some of the best coverage of breaking news and post investigation of shooting events. Sometimes I just read the title, search the item for another source if subject to provocative.
There does seem to be a history of safety issues at the plant. A quick couple of searches indicates the owners may not be involved in day to day operations. Management listed on business sites have male type names, not definitive but an indication. The company website has blocked access so I have only seen the info The Gateway Pundit mentions they pulled from the site.

have peeled away young MAGAS from the commitment to everything Trump does. Yes, they are MAGAS, but with different goals than the older crowd. They won't miss Trump.

Good morning, el!
I did chores yesterday, thinking of you with every clip of every tree limb or vine in the fence line that I accomplished. I guess it to be 85 ft., more or less. I think my hands are getting a little stronger, or maybe the clippers are sharp.
Madagascar's president, seeing Gen Z riots, having his military join the rioters, thought it was time to board a French military plane and leave the country. May Madagascar survive and improve!
After building my home, paying for it as it came together, after adding several additions, I figure my property taxes paid over the decades far exceeds the building costs. What a great feeling to rent my own homestead from the county that never spent a cent on it.Meanwhile, on my day off from the office, I am going to go shopping, mostly for otc meds and frozen or canned vegetables.
Enjoy your day and thanks for this snarky, music filled OT my friend!

Good morning otc. With luck it will get easier, the next
batch will be younger and less tough, if nothing else. Being Californians, we don't park the car in the garage, hence there is ample space for a lot of canned goods, some procured local in small batches when on sale, and others by the case at Costco. We have a small freezer out there too, mostly frozen apples and stock plus various types of meat, fowl and fish.

I have 3 more sides of fence to go.
Recently, a landscaper got a 2nd driving while intoxicated charge. I swapped my services for his crew to clear my yard fence. I got his case dismissed, as a bit of digging showed the officer had been fired for something, so the state prosecutor verified that his only witness was a crooked cop, and I had a really good crew do this landscaping project.
It is easy clippin's!
We have 2 freezers, lots of pantry space, and it all stays pretty full.
I don't know if this is good or bad news, but it seems I can carry an 18 pack of bottled beer. Oh, shit!

Coffee is a luxury,
thanks to tariffs. Approximately 3 weeks ago, I bought a 33 oz. container of Folger's Columbian Coffee at a ridiculous price of $18.48. Today, I bought another one and didn't see the price until I got home and checked the receipt. $22.24.
Good thing I only drink 3 mugs in the morning. I used to drink coffee all day at work.
It was the most expensive item I purchased today.
