Happy Mothers Day 99percenters!

Military Contractors Behind New Pressure Group Targeting Presidential Candidates

Former House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers has formed a new pressure group, now active in Iowa and New Hampshire, to serve as the “premiere national security and foreign policy organization during the 2016 debate” and to “help elect a president who supports American engagement and a strong foreign policy.”

Roger’s group, Americans for Peace, Prosperity, and Security, is hosting candidate events and intends to host a candidate forum later this year. The organization does not disclose its donors. But a look at the business executives helping APPS steer presidential candidates towards more hawkish positions reveals that many are defense contractors who stand to gain financially from continued militarism:

  • Advisory Board Member John Coburn is chairman and CEO of VT Systems, a company that delivers communications technology for the Defense Department.
  • Advisory Board Member Stephen Hadley is a principal at the consulting firm RiceHadleyGates and serves as a board member to defense contractor Raytheon, a position that pays him $228,007 in annual compensation.
  • New Hampshire Board Member Rich Ashooh lists his employment as Director, Strategy at BAE Systems.
  • New Hampshire Board Member James Bell is the chief executive of EPE Corporation, a manufacturing company that says it is a “premier supplier to the defense community.”
  • Advisory Board Member John Engler, the president of the Business Roundtable, a lobbying group for major corporations, including defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing, United Technologies, Northrop Grumman.
  • New Hampshire Board Member Ken Solinksy is founder of Insight Technologies, a night vision and electro-optical systems firm acquired by L-3 Communications.
  • New Hampshire Chairman and Advisory Board Member Walt Havenstein is the former chief executive of BAE Systems and SAIC, two of the largest defense contractors in America. Havenstein, who left SAIC in 2012, was paid partially in company stock options.
  • And blogger Joshua Huminski worked in 2013 as a spokesperson for Aegis Defense Services, a contractor that provided security services to U.S. facilities in Afghanistan. Aegis did not respond to a request asking if Huminski is still employed there.

Russia, China agree to integrate Eurasian Union, Silk Road, sign deals

Russia and China have signed a number of energy, trade and finance deals on Friday aimed at strengthening economic ties. The two countries have multiple mutual projects which “achieved a unity of views on a wide range of issues.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have signed a decree on cooperation in tying the development of the Eurasian Economic Union with the "Silk Road” economic project.

“The integration of the Eurasian Economic Union and Silk Road projects means reaching a new level of partnership and actually implies a common economic space on the continent," Putin said after the meeting with his Chinese counterpart. President Xi Jinping arrived in Moscow on Friday for the 70th anniversary celebration of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.

China will also invest $5.8 billion in the construction of the Moscow-Kazan High Speed Railway, the Russian President said. The railway is to be extended to China, connecting the two countries through Kazakhstan. It can become part of the route of the new Silk Road project, which is aimed at tying China with European and Middle Eastern markets. The total cost of the Moscow-Kazan high speed railroad project is $21.4 billion.

    America as Dangerous Flailing Beast

When I think of America’s place in the world today, the image that comes to mind is of a very large animal, perhaps a huge bull elephant or even prehistoric mammoth, which long roamed as the unchallenged king of its domain but has become trapped by its own missteps, as caught in a tar pit or some quicksand, and it is violently flailing about, making a terrifying noises in its effort to free itself and re-establish its authority.

Any observer immediately knows the animal ultimately cannot succeed but certainly is frightened by the noise and crashing that it can sustain for a considerable time.

I think that is the pretty accurate metaphor for the situation of the United States today, still a terribly large and powerful society but one finding itself trapped after a long series of its own blunders and errors, a society certain ultimately to become diminished in its prestige and relative power with all the difficulties which that will entail for an arrogant people having a blind faith in their own rightness.

America simply cannot accept its mistakes or that it was ever wrong, for Americanism much resembles a fundamentalist religion whose members are incapable of recognizing or admitting they ever followed anything but the divine plan.

‘No more f**king Tory cuts’: Scuffles at anti-austerity demo in London

One protester and several law enforcement officials were injured during heavily-policed protests against the newly-elected Conservative government outside the Houses of Parliament in Westminster.

“No more f**king Tory cuts!” and “Tories – scum!” slogans were chanted repeatedly by a crowd of anarchists, left-wingers and Scottish National Party (SNP) supporters.

At least 17 people have been arrested following the scuffles, Scotland Yard said. According to the Metropolitan Police, five police officers were injured, and two of them were taken to hospital.

Among the placards held by the supporters, who numbered in the hundreds, were “Austerity kills” and “I pledge to resist.”

There was a heavy security presence, including riot police and officers on horseback. The law enforcement officials “kettled” – or sealed off - segments of the crowd, which they adjudged to contain potential troublemakers.

    Happy Mom's day!
Just a quick reminder that some big improvements were made to the Content Stream and the Comment Stream in the left sidebar menu. If you're looking for a quick and easy way to monitor site content then this is for you. The way I do it is I entered the Content Stream page in my browser bookmarks, then it only takes a quick visit to the site to see if there are any new essays or comments. There was also a link added at the top of both pages to quickly jump back and forth between the two. If you visit the Content Stream page and there are multiple new comments and you don't feel like scrolling through the whole essay to view them, then just use the link at the top and jump over to the Comment Stream page and all the new comments will be there at the top in chronological order. This set up should be convenient for those that use phones and tablets to visit our site.

The issue with the drafts not publishing at the top of the essay queue has been resolved. It used to be that a draft would be published by creation date and ended up well down the queue when published. Now drafts publish in real time so they go to the top of the essay queue.

The Memberlist and Tags links have been moved from the left sidebar to the bottom of the page below the 99percent Buddha image.

I'll take any questions you may have about the site and it's functions/features.

Enjoy your Mothers day all you moms!

Thanks for the info on the site, Johnny.

I sure appreciate how clean and streamlined it is. The pages load fast for me which is a refreshing change. Even with the videos. Makes the place very inviting.

I woke up this fine Sunday morning to tree branches hanging over the walkway. A sticky, wet, heavy snow weighed them down. I haven't gone outside yet to see how many are down, but I see a few from the window. I don't think I can take care of it myself, so when I look out I see dollar signs.

Hope every one else's morning started a little better. Smile

Mother's day is usually the target date for when we can begin planting flowers here in the Denver area. And, today we have snow and it's 30 degrees F. Maybe a high of 43 today.

wow, snow, bummer! Hope it doesn't kill any plants trying to bud.

The speed of the site is one of the big draws. We used to have a RSS feed aggregator that was greatly slowing down the site, i disabled it a couple of weeks ago because of the speed issue, to me that was more important than being able to see article headlines from other sites in real time.

I'm glad you're enjoying it here, things are pretty slow right now, I'm not sure why, but things are pretty slow else where also, probably springtime and nice weather.

Got any questions about the site?

No questions, Johnny. At least not yet. I think that is a good sign too. The place is not confusing.

The plants should be all right, I hope. There is one pretty Linum plant that bloomed weeks ago. It has little blue flowers on it and is lovely. It may lose the current flowers and struggle a bit, but I think it will make it.

I finally went outside, and the downed branches are worse than I thought. Turned on the tv to hear there are a lot of power outages around the metro area. So, I am trying to be happy I have power and not worry about the trees.

    ...probably springtime and nice weather.

my son sneaked a shy look into my room and asked "Do you want us to do something together?" And I said, snuggled in my bed fuming away on my labtop at Denise FP gos diary today, "hmm, no" and then, "but it's mother's day today" giving me a questionable look. And I said that's nothing special to me, I am your mother all the days. Gimme a break and lemme do my stuff.

So, I luckily don't have to go to a restaurant today and waste some money to "celebrate" motherhood. I guess I go out now and mow the lawn and then cook some fish.

    Have a good day all.

The immorality of this is breathtaking.

The European Union has drawn up plans for military attacks in Libya to try to curb the influx of migrants across the Mediterranean by targeting the trafficking networks. It is to launch a bid on Monday to secure a UN mandate for armed action in Libya’s territorial waters.
Britain is drafting the UN security council resolution that would authorise the mission, said senior officials in Brussels. It would come under Italian command, have the participation of around 10 EU countries, including Britain, France, Spain, and Italy, and could also drag in Nato although there are no plans for initial alliance involvement...
Libyan militias, jihadi groups, and Islamic State affiliates believed to be in cahoots with the trafficking networks are said to have heavy artillery and anti-aircraft batteries deployed close to the coast. Attacks on EU vessels and aircraft could trigger an escalation and force Nato to get involved, said policymakers in Brussels.

There is practically zero chance of this working. However, there is a real chance of killing a lot of innocent people.

…migrate from the uninhabitable US Southwest, and descend upon Canada.

I wonder if the Canadians will call in NATO…. Or, will they build a 3,000 mile-long wall?

And when Mexico migrates north to the US, I bet that goes over well.

Those Libyan militias and jihadi groups that are integrated with the human traffckers were the guys that we (i.e. NATO) helped overthrow Gaddafi.
Now we are looking at going to war with.

What's more, Libya Dawn and other islamic militias are the primary enemies of ISIS in Libya. So like Syria and Yemen, we will be going to war with the enemies of jihadists that want to kill us.

And after we have made war on the "enemies of jihadists", presumably they too will want to kill us, just like the jihadists . . .

Here's a little something for our smart 99percenters. If I could win, I might say forget the prize money, just take me with you! Let me get off planet earth for awhile.

NASA Announces Journey to Mars Challenge, Seeks Public Input on Establishing Sustained Human Presence on Red Planet

    NASA press release

What do you need to bring, and how do you minimize the need for delivery of future supplies in order to establish a sustained human presence on a planet 140 million miles away from Earth?

NASA is embarking on an ambitious journey to Mars and Tuesday announced a challenge inviting the public to write down their ideas, in detail, for developing the elements of space pioneering necessary to establish a continuous human presence on the Red Planet. This could include shelter, food, water, breathable air, communication, exercise, social interactions and medicine, but participants are encouraged to consider innovative and creative elements beyond these examples.

Participants are asked to describe one or more Mars surface systems or capabilities and operations that are needed to achieve this goal and, to the greatest extent possible, are technically achievable, economically sustainable, and minimize reliance on support from Earth. NASA expects to make up to three awards at a minimum of $5,000 each from a total award pool of $15,000.

Given spacecraft limitations on weight and volume -- and a minimum 500 days between resupply opportunities -- innovative solutions are required for a mission to Mars that is not dependent on Earth for resources. ...

What am I supposed to see when I click "link" at Insert image or link? I don't think I'm getting the right thing.

In my previous post I put the link in with html.

    Thank you.

link below the text editor is to make a hyperlink to an image. The toolbar above the text editor is easier to use, try it next time. The first icon is for inserting images, the second icon is for video and the third is for creating hyperlinks. The rest of the icons are for HTML, type out and highlight the appropriate text and then click the HTML icon and the tag will automatically wrap. The "Teaser break" is for creating a break when creating an essay, at DKos it's called the "fold".

The "Insert image or link" below the text editor is the way we did it before the toolbar was added, I probably should just do away with it as it's redundant. Once you get used to the toolbar it's super easy.

You can also upload an image from your computer to our server and embed in the essay or comment body, which is really handy if you don't use an image hosting site. With the first icon above you can either link to an image in your hosting site, or by clicking the "browse" button you can upload to our server.
