Open Thread - Thurs 17 July 2025 - Trips and Songs!

Trips and Songs!

Been a hectic week so far. I had a LONG drive to the estate lawyer's yesterday, about 4 to 5 hours round trip, plus the meeting with the lawyer, so I've not got a lot for today's Open Thread. And I've been kinda emersed in driving. Here's some fun and scenic driving (not by me!)!

I love the green of Switzerland! I'm from the PacNW, of course I love the green Smile . This is just a very calming, very nice, lovely to watch, video. If you need a bit of a calming time, or a rest, take a look! Or, just take a look anyway, it's worth it! And it doesn't matter if you just watch a bit and come back later, there's nothing to miss by doing that, the lovely scenery just goes on and on.

And something else, a couple of fun songs for us older folks: First for the ladies:

And next, the men:

Fun stuff! So, here's the open thread! What's up, whatcha doing? Reading? Thinking? Remember, everything is interesting if you dive deep enough, so tell us about where you're diving!

Hope it's a great day for everyone and the weekend coming up rocks! Me, I'm getting my hair trimmed today. Woot! Yesterday was the hottest day of the year here so far, today is gonna be cooler. Good. Although the long drive yesterday in the heat with the windows down and the sun roof back was pretty nice. I felt young again. What's up? How you doing? Driving anywhere fun?

good to start the day with a chuckle
driving in the heat is not so bad with
the air-con blasting these days
that was not an option when I was young
so long as the heaters worked in our old
beaters in the winter, life was good

Driving across country, that was always necessary. As it was, I put the sun roof down, the windows down and enjoyed all the wind that created. As you said, heaters are more important, even in the old beater cars of our youth Smile

I don't have time to view the video until this afternoon. Court. Then viewing.
The tunes were funny as all get out!
FWIW, Trump is blaming Biden for appointing Jerome Powell as Fed Chairman. The problem is, Trump appointed him in 2017.
Other than that, we have a driving trip to The Hill Country planned. Mostly easy driving, miles of country highways, with traffic congestion in 3 cities along the way.
I hope the estate planning is going as planned.
Gotta get to work!
Thanks for the OT, chica!

to be expert in the Goebbels "Big Lie" technique. And certainly there is a fraction, perhaps even a large one, of the MAGA crowd who will consistently fall for it.

However, there are indeed cracks appearing in that seemingly-monolithic base. I saw a message from a rock-ribbed repub ex-friend (the one who wanted to use me for target practice) indicating that he's suddenly had an epiphany, and has discovered that Trump (gasp!) lies now and again.

Well, you don't say! I had no idea. Day late and a dollar short there, Bucko- go with Gawd.
So it is possible for even the most blinkered to see threads of Truth. Unlikely, but possible.

Both my wife and I have been shivering since we got back from Mexico. The place we stayed in had air temps of 95-100, humidity of 95%, and the water in the pool was in the low 90s. Getting back here to 20% humidity and 50s/60s at night has been a shock to the system- and the water in the pool in our apartment complex is 75. Yow! We'll re-adapt quickly, but that first dip in the pool after our return was a true eye-opener. Now, if we just had a swim-up bar...

@usefewersyllables to near or actual freezing somewhere in Europe. Just trying to figure out how to board the plane dressed in such a way not to burn up here, and not freeze there, was a challenge. A Christmas Market trip down the Rhine was just an incredible change in temperature. A my travel pal brom honolulu sums it up, "With travel, it's always something."

in the summer, we used to wait until we'd gotten off the plane in PA, and then all head to the bathrooms to take off and/or change clothes. All the light jackets, long sleeved shirts, long pants, into the carry-on and out came the short sleeved shirts and shorts! Man, memories... that was a long time ago I did that!

I would melt, then get used to it, and then shiver like you when I got home! Hah!

Funny about your Trumpster ex-friend, I have a few ex-friends like that. Most people seem to realize they've been had eventually, until the next shyster comes along.

Have a great weekend, even if the pool doesn't have a swim-up bar Smile Smile

for his own appointing of Powell. Figures!! A drive in the Hill Country sounds good. Hopefully, soon, I can get Nikko to calm down when in the car, so we (me and hubby and Nikko) can go driving fun places! Hope all the stuff in court went well and work is over for the week now (yea, I know, Friday...). Estate planning is going pretty well here, we are at the point of... going to court soon to get it finalized. Hah! Glad you liked the tunes. Smile

Well, Costco for gas and a few things in the "feed the whole damn clan" size, and then probably TJs for the rest. That's it til Monday when I, solo, will zip down to the dentist for a hoped for tooth extraction and then prolly CVS for some meds and then another stay-at-home week, More garden work and experiments is what's in line for now. Trying not to buy stuff, but my ancient "Regal" brand wired 'puter speakers are dying, so some bluetooth stereo bookshelf units are seriously calling me, that and a new mattress, but that's all on a "we'll see" basis.

Trash pick up day, so I really need to go get the cans in and feed the birds before anything else, and then play it by ear from there.

be well and have a good one

sounds like me, today. Hair cut, mail, bank, store... Just for some ice cream, a greeting card, a TON of mail including a nice book about identity archaeology and the end of Roman Britain, etc. Somehow, in all of that, my left arm (driver's side window arm) got tanner than my right. Sheez Smile

My ancient speakers are dying too and will need replacement soon, never thought about Bluetooth speakers. Thanks for the idea!

I watched the "Little Chinese everywhere" woman go on a trip to "Shangri-La."

SHANGRILA - the Himalayan Utopia that turned Real I S2, EP76

I saw a teaser by Dr. Gao for one of her upcoming presentations on poetry and took a stab at one by Tang Yin, Ming Dynasty just for fun:

It's spring again deep in the peony garden; A sunbeam in the shade shines like a thousand pieces of gold
People don't understand why I rise at dawn; Because it's too difficult to let go my love of flowers.

Tang Yin, Ming Dynasty

A brilliant scholar whose official career was cut short by his inadvertent involvement in an examination scandal in 1499, Tang Yin spent his life pursuing the diversions of an eccentric scholarly playboy; his adventures eventually entered popular legend. While most of his paintings reflect a pleasure-loving existence, this melancholy album explores the themes of struggle, sadness, and the refuge of solitude.

While most of his fellow painters in the Suzhou area adopted the calligraphic styles of the Yuan scholar-artists, Tang was able to use the more descriptive ink-wash idiom of the Southern Song masters, particularly that of Li Tang (ca. 1070s–ca. 1150s), to portray realistic scenery. This series of leaves shows extraordinary subtlety in portraying the changing effects of weather and season as well as poetic and psychological moods.

There are a number of his paintings at the Met's link..

보현스님 - 무생화(Bohyun - Musaenghwa) Lifeless Flower lyrics Bohyun says this is the world's happiest song.

Thanks for the OT Sima!

The Trump administration is asking for a one-day prison sentence for a former Kentucky police officer convicted in connection with a raid that resulted in the death of Breonna Taylor, a black woman, in her home.

A federal jury had convicted former officer Brett Hankison of violating Taylor's civil rights by using excessive force - the maximum sentence for the charge is life in prison.

If the judge agrees to the US Justice Department's recommendation, Hankison would serve one day in prison and be absolved of further time behind bars because of time already served.

Attorneys representing the Taylor family decried the move calling it "an insult to the life of Breonna Taylor".

"Every American who believes in equal justice under the law should be outraged," attorneys for the Taylor family said in a statement. "Recommending just one day in prison sends the unmistakable message that white officers can violate the civil rights of Black Americans with near-total impunity."

Brett Hankison was the only officer who was charged and convicted in connection with the botched raid.

I watched it this evening, and I remembered my brief time in Zurich. Didn't explore the country, as I was headed for river cruise through 5 or 6 other countries. I do remember meeting a couple on the tour that had their luggage lost by the airport when they left SC. They had stayed in an Air B&B in the Alps 2 days until they joined the tour group. They discovered prices for clothing and so forth in Switzerland was off the charts expensive. They basically did a 12 day tour in one extra set of clothes. Those clothes were almost as much as the cost of the tour!
