Submitted by Socialprogressive on Fri, 06/06/2025 - 5:00pm
Welcome to Friday Night Photos everyone. Your once a week break from the daily insanity of the crazy world we live in. Please post any photos, memes, music, or whatever else you find of interest that helps you escape the madness.
Some more shots from my visit to the San Diego Botanical Garden last month.

Excellent images as usual.
Was it time consuming to get a few of the images without any other people included or were you just lucky?
Hi, humphrey
For the most part I got lucky but there were a few shots (the 2 paved pathway shots) I had to wait for people to move out of the shot.

That worm wood image is intriguing but a quick google search
didn't help much except that the leaves are used to make absinthe.
I was asleep at the wheel
when I titled that image. It was supposed to be wood worms. I have no idea what type of tree the roots belonged to.

Hi pixelators
Hi all, Hey SP!
Great photos as always. Thanks for the OT!
I loved that song from when I was 1-. Absolutely beautiful.
I gotta fly but here is a quick one...
MysDys took this pic. It is the Cardinal nest right outside the kitchen window. Note the egg on the left is much smaller. Also the brown coalesces into a blob at large end, unlike Cardinal eggs where scrawling stays irregular. This is a Brown-headed Cowbird egg. About 25% smaller. They hatch and grow faster, and usually push the other babies out of the nest. Often parasitized nests produce only one Cowbird young.
Worry not, the entire nest was predated, all eggs eaten one morning. Most likely squirrel but Ringtail and other things possible. Mid-morn points to Squirrel. Which are major nest and egg hunters all summer.
Female Cardinals sing. What I did not know was at least this one sang from the nest while incubating all the time. This seems a stupid strategy for remaining concealed at the nest. Surely nest predators learn this. It was asking for it. MysDys said the nest was poorly concealed at best. You shoulda heard what she said about that no good for nuthin' louse of a mate she had...
It was great to be able to observe it all at point blank while it lasted.
Happy trails all!
We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.
Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.

Hi, dystopian
At first I thought you had some left over jaw breakers in the Easter basket.
Those Cowbirds are lazy parents. Always leaving their eggs in someone else's nest to be raised by other birds.
To bad the Cardinals or the cowbird didn't make to hatching.

Hi d
Thanks for sharing the experience, and your wife’s interpretation ; ).
It makes me want to read more about why some birds naturally lay their eggs in other birds nests. Somehow it must figure in the bigger picture of survival, and perhaps balance. I think of the shining cuckoo, who lays her eggs in the little grey warbler’s nest here, expelling the original inhabitants.
Life is infinitely interesting.
I always thought it was weird that the parents don’t recognize
any difference between offspring of their own species versus some other species. Talk about maladaptive. Instinct or evolution or whatever is really dropping the ball here. Or so it has always has seemed to me.
It’s not as if humans could be tricked into rearing the young of some other primate species, without suspecting a thing…
The Milky Way that you haven’t seen before
.
Outstanding pictures of it by numerous photographers. I’d love to be able to take pictures like this while I’m camping, but I just don’t have the patience to because of my pain.
Enjoy.

The message echoes from Gaza back to the US. “Starving people is fine.”
Thanks for the amazing photos, snoopy
They're all so magical.

Extraordinary photography SP
As usual!
I had written a comment about this picture below which I took earlier this week with my phone, after a heavy storm. It's looking east as the sun is setting in the west. My photography skills are naught, so the picture doesn't do the rainbow justice.
The ubiquitous Florida retention pond is there along with the shadows of the ugly apartment buildings. I saw a bumper sticker earlier today which said, "County government, stop building! You're flooding us out!" Central Florida development is out of control. The horizontal sprawl gives storm runoff nowhere to go.
We have some angel trumpets in the back yard. I think they've very beautiful. Ms So and I moved all her larger potted plants to our friend's home, so we're both a little sore still. I had to rent a trailer for that purpose. I used cash to pay for the rental and it caused all sorts of problems, I won't go into.
We brought some of the smaller potted plants mostly orchids to the back patio here at our temporary location while the home is worked on. That created some biodiversity in an area here sorely lacking. So snakes, birds, frogs, lizards, and bugs have arrived creating a mini-ecosystem on the back porch. Ms. So doesn't like the snakes. I tried to get a photo of the largest one, a king snake, I think, hunting lizards, but didn't get a good one.

Hi, soryang
Nice shot of the double rainbow. I wonder if there will be 2 pots of gold at the end of the rainbows?
Glad to hear your temporary garden site is thriving. Hope the work on your house is done soon and you can get back a normal life.

Yowsers, gang!! GREAT images! soryang, I love your rainbow.
Do you and your other half live in CFL? I live in ECFL. I hear you loud and clear about the ecological destruction the builders have caused my state! I hate them and it. jb, I know that tune you linked.
Hey snoopy, talk about kozmik?! I had the Hubble photo site, and now the James Webb ST photo site bookmarked. I LOVE those Outer Limit photos. Sp, like I've said before, San Diego is one heckuva town. I'm sorry I never got to visit it when my sis and her family lived in LA. She raved about it, too. I enjoyed reading about the bird eggs, dystopian. Sorry they turned out to be some critter's gourmet meal. Anywho, we are POed here in the Sinking Sandbar State cos it is hurricane season. Leave it to the Maggot Brained Cartel to wreck our vital storm tracking systems. Of course, we hope Maggot-A-Lardo gets a direct hit by a landfalling cat 6 with Maggot Brains in residence. Fat chance though. Grrrrrr.... Rec'd!!

I guess that's ECFL. It's a convenient area but for the flooding.

Hi, obf
I'm right with you on hoping a cat 6 hits Meg-A-Lardo. Even if that were to happen, my guess is the orange shitgibbon would suck up all the FEMA funds to fix it and leave everyone else out in the rain.
