Saturday Open Thread - 5/31/25: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good people!

I have bitched and moaned about AI being encouraged by the Texas State Bar. Well, I read the 2 articles about it in a recent Bar Journal about the ups and downs. Saves time, looks professional, but hire staff to verify every single word, then verify their work, and you are responsible for malpractice if they didn't catch a mistake and you didn't, either.

Then, AI produced evidence is difficult to be proffered because it takes one, maybe two, maybe three experts to authenticate.

Ok. To generate motions and pleadings, AI requires a lot of personal identifiers of your clients. And you. And, if an opposing counsel and staff are good at it, they can see where your taking your case and head you off at the pass. And you are responsible for any privacy breaches.

I am not seeing efficiency of time and effort. I am seeing the potential for self-destruction.

With that in mind, James Corbett Report has a 52 minute video on AI, which he has been studying and commenting on for maybe 2 decades. He is fair for looking at potential positives, but discusses the potential negatives in depth. If you can find the time, his research is very in depth, well supported by evidence.

We Need To Talk About AI

AI? My opinion:

Well, enjoy your weekend, and please keep us all informed of the events in the world you, and all of us, believe is true.

This is an open thread, and all topics and subjects are welcomed and encouraged. The least we can do for one another is share truth, friends.

I confess, I visited Orange Satan Land, and the great Satan has written a piece on how the democrats have become the party of elites and ignored the working class. I wonder if he'll get purged? I know everybody 99% is welcome here, but I dunno....

Thanks for the OT.

@Snode must excel at convincing the 99% that they care about them and will help them if elected, simultaneously assuring the donor class it's bullshit.
I haven't gifted Orange Satan with a click in a very long time. Pretty crazy there, I am sure.
I slept late, haven't skimmed headlines yet, other than noticing Hegseth is threatening to go to war with China over Taiwan. Same old shit, day in, day out.
Anyway, Snode, enjoy your weekend, friend.

@Snode

such as oligarchs instead of elites and sayy that it’s screwing up the messaging that democrats have to find coherent ones. It’s not the messaging that is the problem. It’s that democrats offer nothing different than republicans because they both serve the same donors. But democrats have bitched about messaging for decades.

Another person wrote that kos’ diary scared the poo out of him. One comment lead to tons of people replying to it. Kinda like an echo chamber.

And as usual most of the discussions are on what bad things republicans are doing and not pointing out how democrats are failing to pass their agendas. Or fighting back. That’s new this Trump term.

@snoopydawg It was always vote blue, no matter who (Unless you're a Bernie Bro). Now we see what the r's are all about, what we always thought. But the d's are showing who they are, and it ain't pretty. Read a story about how dem leadership is meeting at some 5 star resort to game out getting a study done to figure out how to sway young male voters through social media. Why? Don't they talk to regular people themselves, or is it talk down to them? Anyway, fun to watch Orange Satan Land. Wonder who gets purged next?

And we are supposed to consider them geniuses?
Don't know about you, friend, but my weekend plans are to do nothing. Back room viewing deer, front porch viewing of the birds at the feeder, except last night, a snake slithered across the front porch right where I sit. Non-venomous, but still...
Enjoy your weekend, Cap'n!

@QMS I wonder if you have digital currency, and digital employees (AI) working in cyberspace wouldn't that make us obsolete? I mean, skip building anything for real, just transfer good ol' capitalism to this virtual sandbox and let the 1's and zeros duke it out without us. No need to pay off politicians or have a safety net for us meat bags, just the fantasy of unfettered capitalism.

@Lookout hadn't thought of it in years.
One thing that can't be programmed into a computer is a conscience. We need to remember that.
I read yesterday that NOAA announced this hurricane season would be vicious. Gov. Abbott issued a warning to Texans for us to start making emergency plans now. Extra food, water, etc...We will no doubt be staying in town at the office when the power goes down. Maybe we should get a couple more gas cans while they are available.
Friend, it's always something, ain't it?
I hope the holler didn't get out of hand while you were at the festival.

Hi all, Hey OtC

AI may be artificial intelligence, but which is REAL ignorance. Sadly the irony seems lost.

Here is an article my brother sent me due to its flamin' AI follies...

https://www.animalsaroundtheglobe.com/14-birds-every-american-backyard-s...

Scroll down to the list of species every American should attract.

Note the first bird mentioned is American Robin. The photo is of a European Robin. Not found in America. The n scroll down to the Downy Woodpecker entry. The photo is of one of the European Spotted Woodpeckers (Greater, Middle, or Lesser), also not found in America. Then scroll down to the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. The photo is of a Central or So. American species, again not found in the U.S.A. Who is number one with AI. And don't need an editor with a brain either.

How to grow a generation of idiotbots: Raise them on AI.

There was a great Twilight Zone with Wally Cox, how old was that? Where he programmed a computer which then became unruly shall we say. Maybe Ethyl was the computer name. Surely on youtube. We have it on a video tape here! LOL.

Thanks for the OT OtC!

Happy trails all!

@dystopian Is your eye surgery gonna happen soon? Can't wait for it to be over and done.
Only expert birders would be able to discern the errors in that AI generated list. TPTB want us to be ignorant. Fuckers. Even they will one day need a surgeon, a teacher for their kids, a pilot, a functioning sewer, and on and on. Will they be able to identify venomous snakes or just find out the hard way? TPTB have all kinds of power except brain power, so it seems.
I'd be worried if I were an actor...
Have a great weekend, friend, and stay on top of things in preparation for the hurricane season.

@on the cusp Mornin' OtC,

To me AI must mean Astonishing Ignorance, or somesuch. So much is invested in it, TPTB are all in until they are satisfied with returns, Their wet dream is to replace the pesky workers.

I went for the first lasik surgery two and a half weeks ago. They could not perform it because my blood pressure was too high. So have to fix that. I asked if their numbers accounted for the fact that I was always considered a high achiever. I didnt ask what seven months of pursuing treatment and getting a thousand lighter in the bank might have had to do with it. Mysdys, my bride of 42 years, the former 'sweetheart' or 'honey', and now Nurse Ratchett, is working on it.

Thanks, and be well!

@dystopian to have surgery on an eye ball just might have elevated bp? Hmmm...
I was also a bit pumped up at prep, but drank a shot of Valium, and it dropped to normal in a few minutes. I had to pay extra for it.

...or their computer program, they act as if they're so put out. Whhhyyyyy noooottt? So I say, I'm old and I'm tired of the gimmicks, the emails, the messages, the spam, the passwords, the double authentication. If I'm making a contract where the parole evidence rule applies, just give me a hard copy and I'll sign, if I'm so inclined.

That was yesterday, today returning a trailer, the opposite happened. Oh, I can't log it in now, our system is down. Just give me your name and phone number and I'll call when it comes back up. Well can't you acknowledge receipt of the trailer I returned? "No can't do that either, the system is down." I've got a hard copy of the invoice here, so you're saying you refuse to sign it? I said I don't understand, you have a pen, is your finger broken? We'll fix your card when we the system comes up. What card? I paid cash. Well I guess I'll sign it but I can't return your deposit, until the system comes up. I'll call you when it comes back up, and you'll have to come back.

Are Americans now helpless without their digital? They seem not to understand what bad service is.

Maybe someone already posted on this:

This was a great reference on X to Ienaga who fought for freedom of the press in Japan throughout his later life. He's a great critic of the Japanese education system, censorship, and militarism. Sounds like something we know.

Here's link to the 40 or so page excerpt of his book on The Pacific War 1931-1945, wonderful insights on militarism, authoritarianism, education, etc., and how it leads to WWII. If you have time to read this, I think you won't regret it. I intend to get ahold of the entire book. I feel like I gained some valuable insight about our own current experience from reading these informative excerpts from the history. Doesn't happen often.

@soryang I can understand systems being down during power outages, but responsible businesses should have a plan B. Paper receipts just aren't that difficult.
When i read about the upcoming hurricane season predictions, I thought of you. Get out of that home and to inland and high ground asap, friend. One disaster in a lifetime is enough!
The only AI I ever use is Google searches, but if my search is specific enough, I get a good result that can be verified. That is my line in the sand, as Corbett suggested we should all set one for ourselves. There is no way I would use it for business purposes.
just yesterday a man sent me an email saying he wanted to post adverse possession public notices for 30 days, then file to litigate it afterwards. Thing is, that it nonsense. Sounds legal and professional, but that process doesn't exist in Texas law. No doubt his online research went all out AI. To take his case, I would have to put up an argument that his legal research would not control or influence me in aany way, and let me do it correctly, or get another attorney.
I am pretty sure i will hav the time to read the book except today. Thanks so much for giving us the link, friend!
Enjoy your weekend!

Farmers' mrket and a local supermarket to get stuff for the week. Then wen ventured out to the next county to sort out some grief with our cellphone plan. After some interactions out there, returned homw to finish process on the 800 #. Death by a thousand cuts. Finally done until next go 'round.

I asked Captgpt:
"What are the odds that we are both bots" it replied

Assuming you're a human (which is typically the case for users) and I'm a bot (which I am), the odds that we are both bots are very low in a typical scenario.

But let’s break it down logically:

If we treat this as a probabilistic question and say there's a small chance you could also be a bot (say, an automated system interacting with me), and we know with certainty that I'm a bot, then:

Let’s say:

P(User is a bot) = some small value, like 0.001 (0.1%)

P(ChatGPT is a bot) = 1 (100%)

Then:

P(Both are bots) = P(User is a bot) × P(ChatGPT is a bot) = 0.001 × 1 = 0.001 or 0.1%

So unless you're secretly another AI, the odds are slim. But if you are a bot, well… hello, sibling.

The simple fact is that it has no information on or about me, so there is a 50-50 change I'm a bot. If we grant that is clearly is a bot, then the odds are 50-50, or 50%. Fail.

@enhydra lutris Chat sucks at probabilities? Who'd a thunk it! Lol!
There is a doe about 30 yards away and she makes eye contact with me occasionally. Loners like her either have a fawn, which we should have seen by now, or they are run off from the hard because they are sick. Well, she is fat, can jump a 5 ft fence from a standstill, so maybe she is just a misfit? Maybe that's why she likes me.
After AI called a town a human settlement in my search the other day, I should Google ant hill.
Or cemetery. The possibilities are endless.
Imagine world leaders in 40 years. What shit show we will be missing, my friend!

what else is in the one big beautiful bill?
Aaron says that with the work requirement that people who have been deemed too old to work will now have to find a job to keep their Medicaid.
People will die, but Joni Ernst says that we will all die one day. True, but people who have health care will be able to get pain relief and the others will die in agony.

The court thing and the AI thing are not related to the budget so I don’t think that can pass. Unless that’s what the Republicans successfully sued the parliamentarian for.

Democrats have a way to fight this bill, but I doubt they will do it. Both parties hate us because we take too many resources and money out of their donors hands.
