Friday Night Photos Orchidelirium Edition
Submitted by Socialprogressive on Fri, 05/09/2025 - 5:00pm
Welcome to Friday Night Photos everyone. Your once a week break from the daily madness of the crazy world we live in. Post any photos, memes, music, or whatever else you find of interest that helps you escape the madness.
Come along with me on a visit to the San Diego Botanical Garden for their fifth World of Orchids exhibit. This year's theme is Orchidelirium focusing on 19th-century orchid mania, where rare and exotic orchids fueled the passions of Victorian-era collectors and botanical enthusiasts alike.

Hi, Q
Some nice looking Tulips there.
I seem to recall there was a big Tulip boom and bust a few century's back.

Amazing what
is available for posterity!
I don't know what's worse
That it's there for posterity or that I remembered it.

Hi Social
San Diego offers so much natural beauty, whether on the coast, at the lakes, in the zoo, or in the gardens. Thank you for sharing so much of it. Point Lobos was for me the place that switched on the idea of wanting to seriously photograph. I was only there once in the late 70's, but it left a deep impression.
My two favourite orchids are the raspberry coloured ones with their long tendril, or whatever that is, and the orchid over easy egg.
Have a wonderful weekend.
for some odd reason
all I can remember of San Diego was

Ocean Beach and La Jolla. Very different places
but both on the water Oh, and 5 for a buck Castle burgers

You're right again
I mixed up Point Lobos with La Jolla in SD.
You haven't been here since the 70s?
Sounds like you're due for a visit.
I was thinking sunny side up on those eggs.

True,
since the 70's, and sunny side up is closer. Next year may be a possibility for a visit, depending on what my immediate family organises.

You're right Q
It does look like a giant fossilised platypus foot!
Hi, janis
Love that platypus rock formation. As interesting as it looks I would think it's a popular photography subject.

I'm glad
the local beach is a lot less popular at this time of year. On my visit this week I only encountered a few other humans, a lone fisherman, and a couple with their dog.

The anti-garden verse — by someone whose name Arlo forgot:
Re orchids:
A Japanese couple, Yoshito and Jean Inouye, were among my parents’ closest friends and hobbyist orchid experts of some renown. I see that “Uncle Yoshito” had been president of the Honolulu Orchid Society in 1940–1941, and “Auntie Jean” held that office in 1996.

Hi, lotlizard
Thanks for the link and the Arlo. What a great singer and story teller.
Would Yoshito and Jean Inouye be any relation to former Hawaii senator Daniel Inouye?

Any relation would be centuries back, lost in the mists of time
Apparently it’s a very common surname. Wikipedia says the 16th most common, back in Japan.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inoue
Its kanji (= Chinese character) spelling means “above the well.”
Thanks, lotlizard

Hey Sp and krewe.
I'm one of those people who usually looks at anything green, and it croaks. However, I now have 6 healthy orchids and a Xmas poinsettia (red blooms) growing like crazy.
Go figure!! We denizens of ECFL are finally getting plenty of much needed rain. No, I refuse to dwell on the upcoming storm season. I'm set with my hurricane tracking blog regardless of what maggot brains and fellow greedballs pull. Rec'd!!

Hi, obf
I'm not much good at growing things either, but I do have 2 orange trees I've managed to keep alive.
Glad to hear you got some rain.
