Puttin' along

open thread_145.jpg
Here comes our heat wave. Supposed to hit 80F today.
For today only though.
Spring is here.
Snowpack in the local Cascades is 100% or better and the skiers are delighted. Should make for a great summer for boating and swimming and other such watersports. Fishing and farming too!
Last Saturday we were up at the farm, and Otter Creek was higher than I've ever seen it. Hopefully the otters will return. We seen some out in the Cowlitz River last summer. A family of them followed us as we floated down the river in our kayaks. Cute little buggers.
Next Saturday we are having a family get together at a local mini-golf course high up on top of a mountaintop that will have great views of Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Adams. All snowcapped.
Will need to brush up on my putting skills.
Thread is open. What's going on in your neck of the woods?

are in bloom, and the trees are leafing in as fast as they can go- in the Denver area.

This is at least 4 weeks too soon. We've got a couple more good 6"-12" snows to come, and while the daffodils don't care, the trees that have leafed in prior to that happening will get their branches stripped, or be taken down entirely. The spring branch-stripper snows have become increasingly commonplace over the last few years, as the climate has warmed. March and April are always our big-snow months.

It is supposed to hit 80 here on Thursday. For Saturday, it will be a rain-snow mix, with 1/2" of *rain* predicted. If that swings a couple degrees colder, that'll be a nice 6" snow, right there. At least for Saturday, the leaves won't have had time to open up that much- but by the ides of April, we'll be completely ripe for branch-strippers.

after a hot couple of days with this kind of snowpack. The rivers and streams swell and rise. Good for fishing.
You are a mile high though, so late snow is normal, no?
thanks for the post.

According to the historical record, it has snowed every month of the year except for August, here in the Denver area. Where I live, which is south of Denver proper on the north slope of the Palmer Divide at ~6500 feet elevation, we are notably colder than Denver most of the time.

It used to be that most trees would hold off until roughly Mother's Day to get leaves going around these parts. To have the trees significantly leafing in in March is relatively unprecedented. Of course, the many non-native trees that have been imported here now aren't in on the joke- so they get a whiff of warm and think that it is summer, woohoo. It isn't.

The best way to judge when to plant around these parts is to keep an eye on the scrub oak (Quercus gambelii), also called the Gambel oak or the Colorado white oak. Those native plants are completely unmoved by these flash-in-the-pan warm spells, and they ditch their leaves toot sweet come fall, before the snow flies. They routinely wait until circa Mother's Day to begin greening up. In any case, the many recently-arrived out-of-staters who are already planting veggies and annuals with no way realistic to cover them up are regarded as an annuity by the local garden center operators. They routinely sell the same plants to those customers 2, 3, or even 4 times per season.

I'm going to transplant my shrub Early Girl tomato seedlings in the 3rd week in April, and my container is on wheels, as well as having a transparent plastic frost cover- so that I can wheel the whole planter in under the patio cover, and install a heat lamp to keep them from getting crisped in those last few gotcha freezes in May. Maybe this year I'll get the first edible tomatoes before the 4th of July- it's a goal...

Long story short: spring is going to get here, but not today!

Good to hear spring is dawning there.
Almost getting there here as well.

Messing with the oven door today.
Replace or repair becomes the issue.
Always try the repair route first. That has
worked last 3 times, but fear the cost of
repair may exceed the value of the appliance
at this stage of the game. Almost 20 years old.

Enjoy your putt views and thanks for the OT!

@QMS
is always first move with me. It's about exuberant consumption.
I've been working with this cheap Harbor Freight pressure washer for 20 years now. It breaks (wheels, cord, GFI gone bad, tips get holey) but I manage to keep it going. I only use it a couple of times a year, and then it sits in the back of the garage. So I'm reluctant to buy a new one.
Broke it out yesterday to wash the rear patio and it still gets the job done albeit slowly.
Repair-repurpose-recycle. My mantra.
Thanks for stopping by this morning, Capt.

Follow up on the tweet you posted about the 2 Israeli hostages.

Hamas publishes propaganda clip featuring hostages Elkana Bohbot, Yosef-Haim Ohana

Both families clear publication of video showing gaunt captives pleading with freed hostages to speak out about horrible conditions in Gaza

Hamas published a propaganda video Monday evening showing Israeli hostages Elkana Bohbot and Yosef-Haim Ohana, who were both kidnapped from the Nova music festival on October 7 and are still being held in Gaza by the terror group. Hamas has previously issued similar videos of hostages it is holding, in what Israel characterizes as deplorable psychological warfare. The families of both Bohbot and Ohana gave Israeli media the go-ahead to publish the video in its entirety.

Here in the USA arming and funding Israeli genocide and mass murder is perfectly OK, but objecting to it will get you expelled, arrested or deported.

The Israeli are over playing their hand. It's becoming obvious to most rational Americans that our government, financial sector, news media, and Hollywood are captured by a malevolent foreign entity.
Resistance appears futile.
I see no way to correct this other than total collapse and there is nothing left to take.
Sad as it will be.
Thanks for stopping by.

But hopefully the backlash against Israel will be epic. There have been over 60,000 businesses that have closed and the travel economy is in ruins and one of the biggest ports has declared bankruptcy and is shutdown.

The world has never forgotten what Hitler’s Nazis did to the Jews and others, but most of that was done in secret and not live filmed for the world to witness. So I have hope that some day Israel will become the pariah it is and eventually that backlash will hit America and the EU.

At the end of the judge show he mentioned that death toll in Gaza has hit 50,000, more than what yankee stadium hold and the world hasn’t reacted to it. Obviously the death toll is much, much higher with who knows how many people buried in the rubble?

Schumer says that he objects to the word ‘genocide’ because Israel was attacked meaning that he thinks Israel is just defending itself. Never a mention of what Israel has been doing to Palestinians since 1948. That’s okay in his fcking mind.

More information is coming out on how the Zionists made a deal with Hitler sending the lowly Jews to concentration camps while the Zionists got to go to Israel even before it was a state. That’s the story that Zionists don’t want to come out.

"Per the president’s request we are working with DOD and State to determine how to compile the cost associated and levy them on the Europeans,” he said.

Since it’s Israeli ships being targeted I think Israel ought to pay for it, but since we give them our money it still leaves us on the hook.

I guess this is called Signal-Gate where a reporter from the Atlantic was invited to the chat on bombing Yemen.

I am glad everything around the farm and elsewhere is good.
The puttin' party sounds fun. As does the fishing.
Here lately, the temperatures will swing 25 t0 30 degrees from the time I leave for work, then leave for work. I plan my attire accordingly. Crazy.
At any rate, elms here are going from no leaf to full leaf in 4 days. That also means fence clearing goes from "I'll get around to it" to "Shit! I gotta do this now!" in very short order.
Thanks for the ot, friend!
