Duh!
Yesterday (Tuesday) there was an article in the news: 'Bill Clinton suggests US is more likely to elect female president if candidate is Republican'. Bill Clinton basically said that the first woman elected would probably be from the right wing. I wanna tell him all the upper ranks of his party are center or right-wing too. Hah.
The thing is, I've known this little truth for a long, long time. In English type countries, like America, Canada, Australia, UK (not New Zealand, go New Zealand!) the dislike isn't really over gender, it's over politics, and maybe over the way the person running for high office rose into their role in those politics. Electing a right-wing woman is easier than electing a supposed left-wing woman, especially if the right-wing woman has a political history of her own and is not riffing off that of her husband. An example: Thatcher (whom I despised), in the UK, had her own political history. She wasn't there because of who her husband was and the positions he'd 'served' in.
NOT her husband, but close enough, heh. (from the Washington Times)
In the USA who is offered for election has to do with who gets media attention, how that person is presented by their party, and also, the life history (to a certain extent) of the person offered. Of the two females offered by the Dems, #1 was the wife of a former president (Clinton), and that sure seemed to be one of her major good points. Yes, she served as Sec of State under Obama but... was she good at it? Did she do things people cared about? How many former Sec of States get elected pres? Ohh, 7, and the last one was Buchanan in the 1840s! #2 was some lady who was a not much liked attorney general for CA for a few years. She served as vice president after getting no votes and no approval from the common people in the 2020 primaries. She was foisted on those people as a presidential candidate for the Democrats by the powers that be without even the slighted hint of having to gain approval from the hoi polloi.
Could the Dems pick a woman to run who is not obviously just a puppet? Who has some ideas and principles of her own and can talk about them? Who did not get into her position by marriage? Who has a fairly favorable history? That might work, even if she is a 'lefty'. The right wing seems to have done that, at least in the case of Thatcher.
As a side note, I lived in the UK during some of the Thatcher years. It was, where I was living (the Northeast), bleak. I returned to the UK soon after 'we' elected Bush. He was visiting England and was slated to take a much ballyhooed walk along the beach in the northern part of the country. A fellow student of mine got angry at me for electing such a *ss - since I must have done so since I was a Yank. I told her I hadn't voted for him, and asked her if she had voted for Thatcher. I knew she hadn't, few in the Northeast had. She got really quiet, her eyes widened and she mouthed 'ohh', hugged me and never bothered me about that again.
Thanks for reading. Keep on keeping on. Here's the open thread - remember, everything is interesting if you dive deep enough, so tell us about where you're diving!

Happy Thursday!
It's cool here, and wet. And windy at times. And that's ok. Nikko has really gone into dog teenager-hood and its driving us nuts. He keeps 'forgetting' all the stuff he knew just a week or two ago, like, 'come' or 'sit'! Luckily, it won't last too long :).
Hope everyone is doing well. What's up with you?

Hey now
Not sure the gender of the various heads of state
is indicative of their relative moral compass headings.
Heard this Jackson Browne song this morning.
Sings about money in politics. Seems pertinent.
thanks for putting up the open thread Sima
Great Song...
I'm gonna haveta get a copy to play blasting in the car while driving with Nikko. Thank you!
Ohh and gender has nothing to do with the moral compasses of the heads of state. I wish others would recognize that! But I believe they are thinking that it's THEIR moral compass and so if they vote for a woman, wev, then THEY are showing how good they are, not how good the candidate is :P.

Hey, lookee here!
Here’s a part of my white-flash nightmare, in real life. This has everything but the final flash.
Last night, in Dneipro. Coming soon, to a neighborhood near you. Thanks, Brandon!

The current conjecture
is that this was one or more RS-26 Rubezh missiles, which are probably better thought of as MRBMs than ICBMs- but certainly long enough range to lay waste to anything in Europe. If that’s what it or they were. Those clusters of warheads showed little spread- but it seems to me that there was indeed MIRVing going on. So was it 6 missiles each with 5-6 warheads, or one with 30-36 (which was supposed to be banned under the Salt-II Treaty)?
I wonder what Brandon will decide to do next, since they pretty clearly didn’t get the desired full-on nuclear exchange. He’ll apparently keep poking the bear until he gets what he wants, the damned demented fool.

I think it's too early to tell
If this were an ICBM or IRBM the US could easily confirm that. The quality of the video evidence is poor imo, if not dubious. I saw one guestimate on DPA, one RS-26 with 6 mrv, each with 4-6 submunitions. If that's what it was. Why do we have to guess when our "space force" knows exactly what it was? This makes me suspicious to say the least. The spread is not characteristic of MIRV, maybe MRV. To me the spread looks too small for a nuclear launch vehicle. In another photo shown on the DPA video at 12:44, ostensibly demonstrative (as an exemplar) of "MIRV" appearance in the target zone, the photo looks more like tactical ballistic missile launches from different launch sites (it's a still picture).
The other thing that bothers me about this story, is why would Russia demonstrate it's IRBM/ICBM in this manner? It's the ballistic track that is most revealing in terms of detection and identifying launch vehicle type. This is what is ordinarily discussed in intelligence observations of such weapons being tested and typically discussed in open sources once the evaluation is complete.. But thus far that appears completely absent here. At least I haven't seen or heard any such reports yet. This is the DPA link-
ICBM STRIKES DNIPRO, UKRAINE.

Agreed - it is
very early on. And I’m sure that the Space Force knows exactly what was launched, and from where.
I’m equally certain that the American public will be the last people to whom their masters would ever release information. We are to be kept fat, dumb, happy, and in the dark.
I’m just glad that we’re not on launch-on-warning status at the moment. Just the same, I’m sure that the guys at Schreiver were placing a lot of phone calls last night.
So, whaddaya figure the next poke will be? I think it’ll be an unannounced test launch from a boomer in the Indian Ocean towards the Kwajalein range. Something that gets a little closer to real than just giving the Ukies more toys, just for the thrill of it. I would have said an unannounced midnight elephant-walk of all the B-2s to just go cruise around the Arctic Circle for a few hours, but we only have 19 of them left, and they are pretty fragile- we don’t want to use them up for nothing, do we.
I have zero respect for the NCA at this point- whoever it is. This is now altogether too close to the edge for anyone’s comfort.

Brandon doesn't have a chance of survival. But he probably doesn't care, as long as he has an ice cream. Gag!

Good morning sima!
Nikko must get on with adulthood before he gets to stand in the corner.
I honestly never gave gender much thought in re elections.
It doesn't matter if they stand or squat to pee as far as I am concerned.
Brilliant Bill knows the single "liberal" position Harris has in Rove v. Wade.
Must go have a brief trial with a client I have spent one hour with about 6 weeks ago. Let's hope I will recognize him.
sigh....
Thanks for the OT, chica!

went quickly and easily.
I too, don't care about the sex of the candidate. It's what the person says, has done with their life, promises and so on.
Heh, Nikko is growing up. We spent some time playing with an old irrigation hose, just a 6 foot long piece of it, today. He flew, and yes, flew, through the sky after it, 5 feet off the ground, in leaps about 6 feet long. I'm humbled. He also helped me dig up the last potatoes. He's a good kid most of the time. And wow, the energy!
Thanks for stopping by!

His resignation is in effect.
I haven't had time to really think things through about him. I may not like him, but he is smeared to high heaven, other pols who not only have been rumored to be pedos, we sort of see them in action in videos, and nary a problem for them.
It is the selective smear at the selected time that bothers me way more than the content of said smear.

Female President
I don't know if you remember but Elizabeth Dole was thought to be a possible Republican Presidential nominee some 20 or more years ago. She had been in charge of the Red Cross and then a Senator. She had an impressive resume before she married Bob Dole. And, even more important, she came across as a very likeable person, unlike the 2 Democratic candidates.
As of 1999/2000,
Elizabeth Dole had never held elective office. Plenty of appointed positions, including RNC chair, and the spouse of the 1976 GOP VP nominee and 1996 GOP nominee. In 1996 at age 73 Bob Dole was the oldest first-time presidential nominee. He was viewed as too old to run again in 2000. (He did have multiple health issues over the years --- but Walter Reed kept him alive until 2021 when he was 98 years old.
Bill Clinton's hypothesis that the first woman POTUS will be a Republican doesn't demonstrate any in-depth thought and strikes me as being out-of-date. To date, there hasn't been a female Republican that ticks all the right boxes to achieve that. He may just be imagining a GOP Hillary would have succeeded, but forgets that the necessary interim steps would have been highly unlikely.
Hadn't thought about Elizabeth Dole but...
I do remember now, and yea, she came across much more likeable than the 2 female Dem candidates.
