Album of the Week 9-7-24

Afternoon folks!

There's plenty of blues for ya this week. We've got albums from Texas guitar great Phillip Walker and blues composer, pianist and producer Sonny Thompson. We've also got a great album featuring Sippie Wallace and Otis Spann backed up by the Jim Kweskin Jug band - this album is an overlooked gem, don't miss it. After that there's blues rock - a solo album from Jorma Kaukonen (Hot Tuna, Jefferson Airplane), an album from The Fabulous Thunderbirds and a radio interview with Dave Edmunds which includes a live version of his big hit "I Hear You Knockin'." We finish up in the diversity department with country guy Charlie Rich and an album with some great tunes, including "Mohair Sam" and "I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water."

Enjoy the tunes and have a great weekend!

Here 'tis:

Phillip Walker ~ Blues

Sonny Thompson ~ Cat On The Keys

Sippie Wallace & Otis Spann with Jim Kweskin & The Jug Band - Jug Band Blues

Jorma Kaukonen ~ Jorma

The Fabulous Thunderbirds ~ Butt Rockin'

Dave Edmunds And Rockpile - Radio Interview

All the cool kids loved Mohair Sam.
I hadn't thought about that in years!
Thanks, friend!

i hadn't thought about mohair sam for a number of years until i ran across slim harpo's version of it a few months ago on an album that i posted. then i remembered i had charlie rich's version of it somewhere, too. it took a while to dig it out and clean it up, but i'm glad it brought back memories for you, too.

here's the version i grew up on:

Hi Joe,

Great smorgasbord of sounds ya put on the platter man!

That is a great guitar player's Jorma album, what a consummate player he is. Love his stylings.

That Slim Harpo was one of the coolest cats ever...

@dystopian

i especially enjoy jorma's acoustic recordings, with or without hot tuna. there's more of both his acoustic and electric stuff lurking in my collection. Smile

have a good one!

played recently at a great small venue that's not very far away from us. I passed on the opportunity because the only original member of the band is Kim Wilson. To me, The T-Birds are not the T-Birds without Jimmie Vaughan.

We are going there next month to see Ray Wylie Hubbard though, that ought to be awesome given the up close and personal ambiance of the small theater.

@JtC

yeah, jimmie vaughan really made that band, but i've seen kim fronting some other bands from time to time and he generally puts on a pretty good show.

that venue looks pretty cool, have fun listening to ray wylie hubbard!
