Saturday Open Thread - 8/31/24: Odds and Ends
Good morning, friends! How did your week go, and what are your plans for the holiday?
I wanted to give an update on the 5 yr old girl taken from her Mom, and residing for a time on a Choctaw Reservation in Oklahoma. The FBI had recommended a specific process server who could figure out a way to work with the Reservation police chief to get the man served with the lawsuit. The man we hired on the agent's recommendation got it done. My lawsuit demanded the father bring the child to court, present her there to the Mom while the judge watched. It happened! I haven't complimented an FBI agent often, maybe one time, but this agent really cared, really helped. He sounded young. Maybe he has not been swept into the bad side of that agency as yet. The hearing was postponed by the judge, but on his own order, the child cannot leave Texas if and when the father exercises his visitation.
Well, we couldn't find any music venue presenting good bands this weekend. I love Chicago, but how many original band members are going to be on the stage?
So many venues are mostly presenting tribute bands. While I understand all the people playing that great music of my youth were way older then me, that we can see any of the famous ones in concert now is pretty miraculous.
A friend raved about this particular Chicago tribute band from Moscow. Let's listen just out of curiosity, shall we?
Leonid and Friends. They are playing in 3 Texas venues. My friend is getting tickets for the San Antonio concert, is skipping the Chicago concert this weekend near Houston.
Let me know what you think.
Meanwhile, we have had some rain daily for 4 days, and the rains will be much heavier for the next 5 days.
Well, I went to visit my ophthalmologist yesterday afternoon. 18 miles away. Just as I got in my car to drive home, the bottom fell out of the sky. For 6 miles, my visibility was a car length, and for 2 miles on a country road, maybe 5 to 10 feet. I drove 10 miles per hour, merely assumed I was on a highway because of the feel of the tires on the surface. I wanted to pull off the road, get in a parking lot to wait for the storm to pass, but couldn't see the entrances and couldn't see parking spaces. That is the worst driving in a storm experience of my life.
This a sad note. We humans are not the only ones being subjected to poisonous food. It happened to horse champions in Oklahoma, and I bet you low paid workers or untrained and management cutting corners on all safety costs is to blame. I am sure the investigations and future litigation will be revealing. My heart goes out to every horse lost.

This honest smack down of Harris' CNN interview is good for more than one laugh. Think: "the passage of time". He mentions Martin Armstrong puts her true polling numbers at 10%. That many people would actually vote for her? Trump Derangement Syndrome breaks one's brain.

Well, my one desire is for the genocidal war in Gaza ends before saying that is what is going on lands a person in prison. Fingers crossed, good people.
Well, I admit to having other desires, and they are mostly routinely met. It's just the Middle East war thing that I can't do a whole lot about, except hope it comes to a screeching halt.
You folks live everywhere, have lifestyles so varied, such different skills, and unique personal histories. An open thread is the perfect place for you to say anything about any topic and we will tend to understand what helped shape your point of view.

Happy Saturday, good people!
The temperature is dropping, feels like autumn is here. The last rose in my yard petered out today, that Last Rose of Summer.
I hope you are all doing well and have some good stuff to drop in the comments and share with us.
Can't wait!

Good morning...
Trade Day was sparse, but it was a nice stroll and visit with old friends.
We're dry here, but due some rain this week. I hope we get some. It's time to plant cabbage, broccoli, greens, and such. I also bought a bag of winter ryegrass to get out before the rain.
Be careful driving in those white out storms...they're dangerous.
Take care and thanks for the OT!
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Your Trade's Day sounds like such fun.
Our rains have been coming and going within 30 minutes. Before we go anywhere this weekend, we will view the weather radar. However, we all know weather forecasts are not reliable. They are more like suggestions.
That sudden white out storm caught me completely off guard. I had to get on an interstate for a quarter mile to get to the exit taking me home. I made guesses if the 18-wheelers had passed by or slowed down to let me get on the interstate!
Have a fun day planting the winter crops. Your green thumb astounds!
Thanks for stopping by, dear friend!

Good morning otc et. y'all. Cool doays here, thru
tuesday, then 90s for a couple of days, 80s for about 3 more and then back to cool. No precip indicated. The ukies are still committing terrorist attacks on civilians (with NATO weapons, of course, since they have none of their own anymore), can't even think about genocideistan, and the swiss seem to be contemplating ceasing to be neutral and joining the dark side.
Luckily, my operating system just told me that it is tired of being 22.04.4 LTS andd wishes to become 24.04.1 LTS, so I can distract myself from all that worldly shit by simply telling it to go for it. Having warned my spouse what is about to transpire, i'm gonno say have a good weekend, push a few keys here and there and duck.
be well and have a good one

Good morning, el!
Well, we will all hear from you as you re-appear via your tech upgrade. It will be you that is truly on the cusp!
I hope by the time you can read this that you had a great holiday!
Take good care, dear friend.

last I checked, August is toast as well. A bit crispy on the edges.
Like you, can no longer put up with the nutty yahoo genocide BS.
And the Ze leading NATO into a nuclear war is crazy beyond reason.
Anyhoos, glad you got the kid back to mama within the gubmint structure.
Keep-up the good fights! You will win in the end.

Good afternoon, QMS!
News from this morning indicates the US planned the Kurst invasion, and provided the weapons and all intelligence to accomplish it.
In the old days, that would be interpreted as Kurst being a US invasion of Russia. We spin it some other way, because we excel at spin, suck at battle tactics and have sub-par weaponry.
USA! USA!
Well, Ziggy is carrying on the tradition, isn't he? Very cool song!
My secretary was in the courtroom when the exchange was made. The child had been with her father for 40 days, more or less. By observing the child's behavior, it was clear she had been indoctrinated to hate her mom and her mom's bf. It will take a lot of work to get the child readjusted.
Despite the stress, I love to go for the win. I am handling yet another case where the dad with custody has had his 5 yr old child taken illegally by the mom. We hope to have the kid back home in a few days once the writ of attachment of the child is served by the cops.
Some people think court orders can be ignored, and must spend a bit of time in jail before the truth sinks into their brains.
Enjoy this long holiday weekend, dear friend!

Im in the dawg house. I can’t drive anymore so we can’t walk. Sam doesn’t understand why we aren’t, but I can’t keep track of her either and she’s been pushing her boundaries and wondering too far. I told her is partly her fault.

When he first got his law license, I mentored him, even sent him some clients as he was getting his feet wet as a general practice attorney. He gradually switched to criminal prosecution, but seems to remember well what it was like to just represent the every day public. He reserves harsh punishment for deserving cases, smacks down with a very light hand on that category of his case load he describes as "bull shit cases".
Harris loved her powerful and life-destroying pen strokes. Imagine her as a President and the thrill of signing bills and Presidential executive orders. That actually frightens me, and I am not especially easily frightened!

Hi all,
Hi OtC!
People don't know rain until they know east Texas rain!
Two worst we ever saw were in Longview, 17" in 18-20 hours, and in Victoria. In Vic we had to pull the U-Haul (from Boston on our way to Portland (by Corpus)) off the road, it was not drivable in zero vis and endless lightning whiteouts, just praying we didn't get rear-ended. And every time we look at the radar ever since, the worst cells are around Victoria. Sometimes the ONLY cells are there!
That Chicago cover band is great! Guitar player studied Terry Kath, and really did that part well. Horns are good and so are the vocals.
Incredible horse story. Sounds maybe like the food processing plant was not diligent, or competent.
Thanks for the OT, OtC!
happy trails all!

Good afternoon, dysto!
Nobody pulled over, and there was insufficient shoulder to have made it safe to do so.
There was a huge wreck in the exact place I entered the interstate that happened about 90 minutes later. I haven't heard a casualty report. I saw many dumb asses driving along without turning on headlights or even parking lights.
I haven't been to Victoria in decades. Haven't missed much, it seems.
The most likely scenario is that the food processor mixed some cattle feed with horse feed, containing one ingredient that is a horse killer. Shoddy, stupid, negligent, deadly failure of the work force in that plant to skip on a thorough cleaning of the equipment. I bet the veterinarian was traumatized by what he helplessly watched happening to those magnificent animals.
I do think Leonid and Friends are a great tribute band. I attended a Chicago concert in my teens, and if I close my eyes and listen to Leonid and Friends, I am there again.
I attended one tribute band performance a few months ago named The Bob Wills Texas Playboys under the direct of Jason Roberts. They were great, true to the sound and vibes, and we had a blast being there. We should all hope the tribute bands of the future stay the true course.
We keep a cement pad on the ground sprinkled with black sunflower seeds. One morning, I was treated to 4 beautiful blue jays having breakfast 15 feet away.
Have a great holiday, friend!
Thanks for the music comment!

Hey OtC!
Yeah a lot of Texas is great with shoulders, other parts its a ditch, often full of water, with moccasins. I do like the crowned shape lots have, higher in center so these massive cloudbursts run off quickly. I know you won't believe a Texan could exaggerate like this but one here told me he saw single raindrops that were a tenth of an inch.
How neat you got to see Chicago in the old days. Those first seven albums are the ones. They were great! The Tanglewood show is on Utube, about 1970 or so, really a great example of how good they were live.
Blue Jays are one of America's prettiest birds. Purple and blue and black and white, gorgeious birds. I like the old description of their alarm call, "Thief! thief! thief!" They can do a perfect Red-shouldered Hawk imitation, very hard to tell apart. I have on the wall a 1905 litho of a Blue Jay by Louis Agazziz Fuertes, one of America's great bird painters.
happy trails!

At times,
I have lots of blue jays around my office in town, but for whatever reasons, they were very scarce t my home 2 miles from town. This has been the year where they have started feeling at home here.
I have seen some gorgeous and exotic birds in Africa and central and south America, but here in the states, I consider the Jays to be the most beautiful I have ever seen.

Like Flowers in the Sand
This Kdrama on Netflix is pretty good. It's focused around a small town Ssireum wrestling club and the community around it. I've been disappointed in the quality of Kdramas lately. This is a nice break from the bubblegum, romances, horror, time travel, and gory crime stories, (which I don't watch). This outtake focuses on the Korean wrestling sport itself, but the drama is mostly about character development, and relationships in the community. I saw one review that said this made it idealistic because the positive relationships in a small town community are a thing of the past or words to that effect. I hope this outtake loads because it might be interesting to watch for 3 minutes if you haven't seen the sport.
The 101st anniversary of the Kanto earthquake is just about here. This is also the 101st anniversary of the associated massacre of Koreans and others associated with that unfortunate event.

I liked this street scene in Seoul during the 105th Candlelight procession opposing the Yoon administration. Looked like they had a few thousand marchers today.
The signs basically say the people are angry, let's impeach Yoon Seok-yeol.
Yoon's economic, social and political policies, along with his politically motivated prosecutions and foreign policy are aggravating enough, but his support appears to breaking down among the elderly who are his base due to the ongoing medical crisis in South Korea. As the elderly, and even the loved ones of some of the more privileged are being turned away from ERs and inpatient treatment due to medical personnel shortages, his poll numbers may break down even further. Even some conservatives are pointing out Yoon's address to the nation this week was completely unresponsive to pressing social and economic issues.
Misogyny is out of control in South Korea.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is already being used domestically by the intel agencies, FBI and perhaps even local jurisdictions:

I admit reading detective novels occasionally to get ideas for defending an alleged criminal. Once in a while, some fictional character discovers evidence not seen by police. Well, that is a common occurrence in reality.
Today, I may entertain myself with some funny dog videos!

I admit
...to reading true crime books, and watching detective movies, etc. Everyone loves a good mystery. I used to watch the Korean crime dramas as well, but they became so gory and sadistic even, it just turned me off. I guess it's the if it bleeds it leads syndrome. I just don't find that appealing at all. I don't recall the tv detective series in the "good old days" being so gruesome.
語必忠信 行必正直
They weren't gory.
I watched them all, even as a young child at my most sensitive phase in life.
I have visited Mayan ruins 4 times, 3 countries. I am aware of the brutal sacrificial murders to appease the gods.
But I hit my limit within the first 15 minutes of the movie, Apocalypto. I left the room to avoid even being able to hear it, much less watch it.

As for those who are appalled at Biden’s continuing support of genocide stay democraticats? Leave the damn party and give your vote to Jill Stein and scream it from the bottom of your lungs. Otherwise if you got for Kamala you will be supporting genocide. It ain’t rocket science.

He’s been on vacation for over 2 weeks so who has been making the war decisions? Probably the same guys who have been making them for the last 4 years. Biden has shown that the president isn’t in charge of the country. But then who is?
