07/22 Open thread: Pi Approximation Day
Hokay, elsewhere 07-22-2019 (7/22) is written 22-07-2019 (22/7) and 22/7 is a classic early approximation of Pi that possibly even predated pi. Ergo, Pi Approximation Day. OR, perhaps, more simply, 7/22, written with a virgule, is a fraction which is the inverse of 22/7, an early approximation etc. BUT WAIT.
I recall being taught about 22/7 and that it was an approximation of Pi and that it was wrong, but sometimes closes enough and all that. Possibly before we were introduced to decimals? Later, we learned Pi as a decimal, 3.14, or even 3.1416, which is really 3.1415927 rounded up and forgot about 22/7 completely. So which is really pi, 3.14 or 3.1415927 (which is really 3.14159265)? They are, all of them, approximations, and arguably just s wrong as poor old 22/2. In fact, we now "know" Pi to approximately 105 trillion decimal places, but that is still just an approximation. There are two things of interest here.
22/7 reduces to 3 and 1/7, which, to 2 places, is 3.14, just like the commonly used decimal version. (Arguably is could still be used for some purposes, who knows, perhaps Boeing actually does so.) But, 1/7 is a very special number, an infinite repeat of the digits 142857, thus: .142857142857142857..., and multiplying it by any number less that 7 is ludicrously easily; one finds where the decimal point goes and erases everything to the left thereof. This involves multiplying the first 2 digits by the desired number and placing the decimal point in front of them. Three times 1/7: 3 x 14 = 42, ergo 1.42857142857142857...; 5 times 1/7: 5 x 14 = 70, ergo 14285.7142857142857...; 4 times 1/4: 4 x 14 = 56, ergo 1428.57142857142857..., etc. Unfortunately, 22/7 fails to confirm to the standard value in the third place, which is pretty seriously approximate.
This brings up the more important issue of exactly how many decimal places to use. There is a whole heap of theory called significance arithmetic which I am not going to go into, but there is a general rule that a numeric expression, especially if the result of a computation should not appear to be more accurate than the actual accuracy of the measurements involved. So you decide to find the circumference of your dinner plates, whip out an old yardstick given to your grandmother as a promotion by a fabric retailer and measure the diameter, which is 10 and 1/8th plus roughly half of an eighth ( the yardstick only measures down to eighths). You call it 10 and 3/16 and your calculator tells you that is 10.1875. Your trusty calculator uses 8 digits for pi to impress buyers with its precision and quickly computes 10.1875 * 3.14159265 = 32.004975122, which is absolute garbage because your measurement was only good to 4 places. You should round the result to 4 places, and since the 4th place is a 9, you get 32.0050. It would've been wiser to simply use 4Pi to 4 places, 3.1416, giving you 32.00505, which you then round to 32.0051.
So, Pi approximation day is redundant except as a reminder to be careful when choosing Which approximation of Pi to use.
07-22-1209 brought us the opening salvoes of the Albigensian Crusade (or Cathar genocide) in the form of the first military action of said "crusade", the Massacre at Béziers. It seems that a bunch of European Christians were sufficiently scandalized by the corrupt and dissolute lifestyles so prevalent among the Catholic clergy in Languedoc that they began preaching and acting out heretical anti-materialist reformist doctrines, mainly as to prayer. The Cathars were practicing Catholics in every way, except one belief - that the ordinary person could pray or talk directly to God*. They have been labeled proto-Protestants because of this. Such satanic deviation from church practices clearly could not be tolerated and Pope Innocent III ordered them to be exterminated, which they were. Naturally, this was facilitated by the fact that the Pope offered their lands and goods to their murderers as a reward. A lot of people think that the Crusades were strictly about waging war on Islam, but there were numerous European crusades aimed at pagans, heretics, apostates, and others with imperfect rituals and doctrines. When viewed strictly as genocides, the European crusades were more successful than those aimed at the Muslims.

On 07-22-1893, Katharine Lee Bates was so inspired by the view from Pike's Peak that she wrote America the beautiful. Pike not only failed to summit the mountain, but he never heard the song either. Such is life
The Preparedness Day Bombing occurred on 07-22-1916. A parade had been organized by a group advocating US entry into WWI, and conservative and anti-union persons and groups. A bomb was detonated during the parade which killed 10 and injured 40. A couple of union leaders were quickly framed and convicted for the bombing. Eventually, after many years and a great deal of evidence of perjury, false testimony and the like the two victims of the fraudulent trial were pardoned.

Good morning...
Great lesson about pi - which I think of as circumference divided by diameter.
A cloudy cool (70F) AM. Got some trails (firebreaks) to mow today. More rain called for this PM...and all week. Sure is rare to have daily rains in summer here, but the pattern set up nicely this year. Should minimize the drought.
So thanks for the music and OT. Y'all have a good day!

Good morning Lookout. Good luck with your firebreaks.
here's hoping that you don't need them.

Good morning, El!
We are experiencing a cool front, highs of 85 this week. Wonderful! Except that rain is predicted for 8 of the next 9 days, with possible flash floods.
We can't catch a break.
Thanks very much for doing the math so that I don't have to.
I look forward to the upcoming giggle-fest of a presidential campaign. Thus far, neither Pelosi nor Obama have endorsed Kamala.
Interesting times, eh?
Take good care, my good friend!

Good mornng otc. We're expecting middle to high eighties
for most of the week ourselves. Giggle fest is right, which is actually too bad since it shouldn't be a laughing matter because it is a tragedy that it is such a farce.

And I would be remiss
if I let the day go by without mentioning the great Indiana pi bill of 1897…
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_pi_bill
Just another one of many examples of attempted (and misguided) lawmaking…
Twice bitten, permanently shy.
with respect to which the bill claimed that the square
root of 2 was 10/7, which either the bill or the wiki computes as 1.429, which should really be 1.42857142857 etc. ad infinitum even if you do buy into 10/7. Never put 7 in the denominator if you can avoid it.

I do believe that it would not be a stretch to say that recent
events with regards to dementia Joe and cover girl Jill could be described as being on the receiving end of a "pi in the face".
Heh, in a sense, pie in the face for the entire
country.

Hi all, Hey EL!
Hope it's good all over out there!
Hammock's rock, so you don't. They are great for backpacking, sloped, wet or rocky ground no problem.
I saw DiMeola about 76 with Chick Corea and Return to Forever. His album Casino was huge amongst guitar people in LA. Everyone instantly knew who he was. Then this came along...
The album Maggot Brain was held in the highest reverance in my early 70's high school stoner music freak circles. Free your mind and your ass will follow... The kingdom of heaven is within...
couple Q's:
Does Hillary have all her purple attire at the dry cleaners?
Did Kamala Harris go to the Hillary Clinton school of cackling?
happy trails all!

Bye Bye American Pie
Yoon has spent entirely too much time in bars and clubs. This white house appearance was April 2023. He was definitely singing an American tune.
Today Yoon critics are angry that he vetoed two special investigation legislation acts to investigate his wife for insider stock trading and unlawfully receiving a Dior bag worth about 2 grand to influence policy. All the insider stock traders were convicted and sentenced a couple of years back, but not Kim Gon-hee, the first lady. How to cope with public anger? Have another fake investigation conducted by prosecutors apparently at the first lady's convenience. That was held at a secure location, related to the presidential office guard unit on the 20th for about 12 hours. The arrangement and time were unorthodox to say the least. The first lady apparently got to negotiate the conditions for both. It's unlikely she'll be referred for trial of any kind. One statement released from the administration said, that she intended to forward the Dior bag to the appropriate government office, but "forgot," so there is no requisite intent.
These antics provoked some high profile democratic members of the opposition to complain. Jung Cheong-rae said the prosecutors were dancing to the tune of Kim Gon-hee's tambourine and fan performance. They were highly critical of the mainstream press as well because it rarely reports on suspected presidential office misconduct and if so always presents that office's point of view and disregards whatever is unfavorable to the administration. One of the high profile administration critics Yoo Shi-min apparently had an interview with the famous former JTBC journalists Son Suk-hee, which got 4 million views. (I haven't watched it yet but heard Yoo describe it). Son Suk-hee's journalism was widely associated with the impeachment of former president Park Geun-he, not mentioned at all in the mainstream despite the fact, that Son has avoided public journalism for a few years now. The high profile critics say Yoon is likely to leave office either by impeachment or voluntarily before his term ends.
I basically learned the foundation of South Korean politics from watching Son Suk-hee's reports as an anchor on JTBC for a few years. His speaking voice is very clear in the Seoul dialect. I received a modern history or current events lesson almost every time I watched.
Below is one of my favorite gayageum players. The young performer sings so clearly, the google translate function translates this song virtually perfectly to English saving me the trouble as I was going to translate/transcribe it. There is a translation that she pinned below the video. I think its the same as google. There must be a learning curve for this google function. I've rarely seen it translate this well. The Chinese songs it translates are awful, typically awkward and don't make sense in English. This is the first time I've seen her post a transcription. The song is an innocent country type song, it's been around a few decades at least.
Love story of a mountain boy.
Thanks for your Pi thread Enhydra Lutris and your musical selections!
(I tried to post a similar post earlier today and lost it. I reconstructed it without some minor details I couldn't remember; trying again).

This is a google translate-
Cho Guk, has his own party now in the National Assembly, a small one, allied with the Democrats. He is subject to prosecution litigation now, indicted for political motives by the Yoon machine just like Park Ji-won, Yoo Shi-min, and Democratic Party Leader Lee Jae-myun. Park Ji-won the former NIS director was acquitted on appeal as I recall. He thinks Lee will also be acquitted eventually. Cho's wife was already sent to prison by Yoon and company. We'll see who goes to prison first.
Kim Gon-hee was implicated indirectly through one of the principals in the Deutsche Motors insider trading scheme, who claimed some knowledge of the Cpl. Chae negligent homicide investigation cover up. If true, this is a prima facie impeachable offense for Yoon, so it has to be cut off at the pass, like these other charges against Kim Gon-hee. Simone said earlier that Kim Gon-hee was questioned by prosecutors at the Information Security Agency. Ostensibly this was to protect any answers she gave from leaking to the media.
Anyway I had been wondering for more than a week what the references to the Chinese Tang Dynasty by the opposition meant. They would say when criticizing prosecutors, Yoon's office, and conservative media, "What is this? Is Korea the Tang Dynasty?"
(edit 1 corrected the Cho Guk mistakes in the translation; 2 corrected to Deutsche Motors)
