Friday Night Photos Small World Edition
Submitted by Socialprogressive on Fri, 06/07/2024 - 5:00pm
Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.
Before last week's camera club meeting at the photo arts building in Balboa Park I stopped by the park's rose garden with the macro lens hoping to find lots of bugs. Unfortunately it was a slow bug day and I didn't find much. Oh well. Some days you bite the bear and some days the bear bites you.
Since the pickin's were so slim I included a few (#3 & #6) from a previous visit to the cactus garden.

Great shot.

Hi, snoopy
Excellent shots from space. I'd love to go to the ISS and take photos of the Earth. With your selection of photos I'm guessing I'm not the only one that thinks the spiders abdomen looks like the planet Jupiter.

Fascinating and beautiful bug views.
I love them all.

Good evening SP. Great photos as usual. One really has to
love "staring into the abyss", I think we've all been there one time or another.

Hi, EL
With the Dooms Day clock at 90 seconds to midnight, I think we're staring into the abyss on a global scale. Keeping my fingers crossed sane heads will prevail.

I got a few pics this past week in Cambria, on and from the

Looks like you had a great week in Cambria, EL
Thanks for taking us with you.

Thanks for the photos el
The foliage seems incidental to the structure of the trees. Such beautiful examples of being windblown.
Do seals sunbathe in the rain?
Enjoy the weekend
Hi Janis. I was just using foliage as a substitute for
vegetation; it is really the structure of trees that gets my attention. (In fact I have a lot of photos of dead trees.)
Pinnipeds (seals and sea lions) haul out for a lot of different reasons and do so in all kinds of weather, but I'm not sure that sunbathing is one of them except as incidental to thermoregulation. Simply resting is one, as is thermoregulation, mating, giving birth, nursing and, no doubt, more.

Hey EL!
GREAT photos man! That is a great section of the central Cal coast. Love those wind-blown Cypresses. The ones on Pt. Reyes have had every eastern vagrant landbird.
Wonderful shots!
Happy trails!

Hola Dysto. Thanks.
Definitely a great chunk of the coast, not sure where to draw the line(s). Now that we don't have the trailer we don't stay at El Capitan, Refugio and Gaviota state beaches any more. My medical provider, Kaiser, which is about as close to health care as you will find in the US, is locked out of the central coast because of monopoly/competition concerns or we might move there. Some day we might anyway, we've got friends who moved there and kept a pied-a-terre up here so they can drive up monthly for all their health and medical issues.

Gaviota!
Those are three fantastic state parks. All three are famous for eastern vagrants in fall. All the eastern warblers have been seen at their little creeks with habitat.
MysDys and I have surely woke up a dozen times at Gaviota. We really like it. I have seen Broad-billed Hummingbird, Prairie Warbler, Blackpoll, Am. Redstart, N. Waterthrush, Red-eyed Vireo, and other vagrants there. What a great place! And as soon as you get N. of the Najoqui Falls turnoff, start looking for those southmost Yellow-billed Magpie on the coast. Then there is Anderson's Pea Soup ahead!
happy trails!

Hi Social
Can you please explain the 3rd photo to me. It’s hard to tell whether the little round pods are plant or animal, or on land or water. When I look at the 2nd to last photo I think the pale green base and the orange pods may be flower buds on a cactus? Anyway, your photos of the unseen world of insects are wonderful, thank you.
Loved the music, will listen to some more of them.
Hi, Janis
Both bugs were on the same cactus plant, and the pods are part of the cactus plant.

Hi again Social
Such an elegant home the snail has. I'm assuming It's a snail, not a slug, as it is out in daylight?
It's a snail
It was moving so fast I barely had time to get a shot of it.

You're kidding
aren't you ; ?
So, you're saying
you're not buying the BS?

I guess so ; )
Hi Janis!
The dichotomy key would be nearish: 1) External shell = snail, 2) no external shell = slug.
Lots of those socal snails are the Euro snail of escargo fame introduced to make food.
Interesting photo ya got there ms. mysterioso.
be well!

Hi d
Do slugs sometimes turn into snails?
And here I am thinking I am an open book ; ).
Enjoy d
Hi Janis!
Not that I know of. Slugs are slugs, snails are snails, and shelled or not is the main difference. A slug is in essence a shelless snail. They are closely related, but different and separate groups.

Hi pixelators
Hi all,
I didn't take these a client just sent them. They are some Fiji corals he just got from me.
Acropora sps. cf. tenuis
Acropora sps.
These three are in 'brain coral' group, first type 'open' brain, last one a 'closed' brain.
Trachyphillia goefferyi
another Trachy goeff
probably Platygyra sps.
Hope all are well!
Happy trails!

Hi, QMS.
No such thing as being late to this party. I like the hanging decoration in the second shot.

the story I was told, the round panes are the cut-offs from making fancy
wine glasses. the local folks would take these cast aways and make windows
out of them (with a bit of soldering). Has been resting in my shop for about
20 years, got a creative spur under the saddle last month. Framed and hung it
over my office window. Now I keep the curtain pulled open to see thru history.
Super-imposition. Glad the party is still churning!

Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.
Hi Q
Your window photos are very evocative and dreamy. For me they evoke distant memories of the environment you live in, having grown up in a similar one. There's also a sense of serenity in the images. Thank you.
Very nice variety of photos, you all.
Sp, I even paused and studied that spider image. That's saying something cos they give me the heebee-jeebees (shudder). Anywho, Rec'd!!

Hi, orlbucfan
Glad the spider didn't creep you out too much. If you saw how tiny it was (smaller than the fingernail on you pinky finger) it wouldn't creep you out at all.
