Pete Seeger

Open Thread Image.jpg

I'm off to the Florida Folk Festival this weekend. As I pondered what to leave for an OT this week, I thought perhaps the ultimate folk musician, Pete Seeger would be a fun topic. I hope some of you enjoy a bit of his story.

Pete Seeger: The Power of Song 2007, FULL VERSION! (1.5 hours)

“What’s good about folk music,” wrote Pete Seeger in a 1974 issue of Sing Out! magazine, “is that it is not show business. … It should be the fiddle or guitar, bongo drum or harmonica that’s brought out after supper dishes are cleared away and families make their own music, rather than switching on the magic screen.”

I never met Pete but I have a connection with him. My political mentors helped keep his wife out of the WWII internment camps (she was of Japanese heritage). I knew his half brother, Mike Seeger fairly well. None the less Pete had a big influence on my musical development.

Pete Seeger has done more to popularize American folk music than any other contemporary musician, authoring or co-authoring songs that have become folk standards: “If I Had a Hammer,” “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” and “Turn! Turn! Turn!” to name just a few. His work has inspired countless musicians including Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and the Dixie Chicks, and his tireless political and environmental activism have galvanized generations of admirers to follow his lead and take action.

Born on May 3, 1919 to Charles and Constance Seeger, music was in Seeger’s blood from the first; his father was a Professor of musicology and his mother, a classical violinist. Seeger grew up surrounded by music, learning to play the ukulele, guitar, and banjo by the time he was in his teens. An early job assisting folk archivist Alan Lomax to transcribe and record traditional music in the American South cemented his commitment to reviving the American folk music tradition. Trips with Woody Guthrie enriched his (and America’s) repertoire.

Seeger’s commitment to the revival of American folk music is rivaled only by his commitment to using music as an instrument for social change. His activism has been a constant in his career. Throughout the 1940’s, he was singing protest and union songs–first with Woody Guthrie, and his first group, The Almanac Singers. The Weavers cover of Lead Belly’s “Goodnight Irene” became the number-one song for 1950. But at the height of their popularity they suffered from FBI surveillance for their politics, forcing Seeger to spend much of the 50’s battling HUAC for his socialist beliefs.

“If music only could change the world, I’d only be a musician.”
Pete Seeger

Like my political mentors he was called un-American.

One of America’s most controversial folk singers, Pete Seeger, performed at the Civic Theater here last night while pickets marched outside. Among the placards were some that read: Ban Reds from Community Buildings, Pete Seeger Admits Use of Red Propaganda in his folk music. Leaflets referring to alleged Communist connections of Seeger were distributed by the San Diego Patriotic society, whose president, Jack Childres, was represented at the demonstration by Duncan Clark, director of operations for San Diego Youth for Christ. After last night’s concert, I asked Seeger what he stood for—what he was trying to get across in his folk music.

This Land is Your Land is my favorite version of this great folk tune. I always felt (and still do) that it should have been our National Anthem. The Star Spangled Banner is a war song, and needs to be retired. I'm a Floridian, Lookout. Smile Do you live in the Sandbar Peninsula state? Is White Springs near the Live Oak area? Enjoy the folk fest. I still chuckle at the fit Pete threw backstage when Dylan went all electric at the Newport Folk Fest back in the day. Pete was rippin' po'ed. Dylan was his usual self: merrily dancing to the beat of his own drum. LOL. Informative diary and great links. Rec'd!!

I live in the Panhandle. It's about 400 miles from Pensacola to Jacksonville with Tallahassee in the middle. I've seen the signs for the Folk Festival from I-10 when one of my children lived in Jacksonville. I know it's to the east of Tallahassee but I'm not familiar with the towns over there on that side, but I believe it's near where all 3 states come together.

No mention of the 8 years of attacks on the Donbas, or the 2014 brutal coup that deposed Ukraine’s elected president or the Z walking away from a very generous peace agreement. Or the 30 years of NATO’s encroachment or the thousands of American troops put into countries that border Russia. Or ignoring Putin’s last ditch attempt to ward off the unprovoked war….or the billions of American weapons or the thousands of Americans operations the weapons that attack Russia territory and kill Russian civilians. You know like the constant attacks on Belograd like what happened against last night killing 4 civilians including a child.

Sure, Big Z, Putin just woke up one morning and decided to attack Ukraine williages.

Can you tell that this was professionally filmed in a green room with the Little Z dressed in battle fatigues?
Sadly many American shitlibs believe this stupid narrative. They say that WE must win this war.

Our congress has appeared with the same branche of Nazis that Boris welcomed in parliament. Both Germany and France have trained Ukraine troops who wear Nazi patches on their uniforms.

But Russia fighting against the Nazi regime again is just Russian propaganda.

@QMS

It’s a good question though why there is so much support for Nazis worldwide. Here’s when they were invited to congress.

MAX BLUMENTHAL: Given that there’s been anti-Semitism on display in Ukraine and anti-Roma violence, you think it was a good idea to invite the founder of two neo-Nazi parties, the Social National Party and the Patriot of Ukraine? I’m referring to Mr. Parubiy.

An open neo-fascist who founded two parties that could pretty much be safely described as neo-Nazi was welcomed on Capitol Hill. He had just met with Representative Paul Ryan, who is actually his counterpart as the Republican Speaker of the House. And he also met with the State Department officials, who were really so proud of their meeting with Parubiy that they tweeted about the good meeting they had.

Lindsay has been screaming hysterically about all the anti Semitism on college campuses and yet he and his BFF McCain had been meeting with the Nazis of Ukraine since 2014 and promising them weapons once Obama exited and the Hellabitch was coronated…..oops. But isn’t it weird how Israel has absolutely no problem with us supporting them? Just like they never tracked down the Nazis we brought here or the Canadian ones or any others in numbers countries.

Speaking of the Hellabitch she is now blaming women for her loss.

Clinton says women abandoned her because she wasn’t ‘perfect’

Boy the folks at Naked Capitalism had a lot of fun attacking her new spiel. Worth reading the comments.

The Rev Kev

“Clinton says women abandoned her because she wasn’t ‘perfect’ ”

Well I am now officially gobstoped. The outstanding characteristic of Hillary’s campaign was the groundswell of female support for her and they were everywhere. Some joked that they supported her so much so that when she would be elected President, that they could go back to brunch. Magazine covers were ready to print with her image and the text “Madame president'”. And the night she lost there were endless images and videos of girls and women crying outside that center at their loss and in the coming months you had the pink pussyhat movement to show that she still had their loyalty.

And now she turns around and blames them for her losing.

IMG_1230.png

Tommy S

Indeed. And her record on Iraq, TPP, support of fascist overthrow in Honduras, and tons of Wall Street speeches for big money after a global crash! She is so out of touch, so un self aware. the book ‘shattered’ is really hard to get through, she is so full of dumbness. “Why are people angry”, she asks. AS Albright said, they believe ‘there is a place in hell for women that don’t vote for her’…..that is, vote for a mass murderer of women and children.

@snoopydawg

I feel like we know Hillary really well. 2016 was brutal. We saw things that very few would ever see or understand. Hillary was a loser before she became a candidate. Historically, Presidential candidate with numbers as bad as hers, have always lost this election..

However, I think Hillary may be right when she blames women for her loss in the most corrupt Presidential election in US History. It seemed to me a win was just possible in August, September, and October of 2016, just before the Presidential election — without any further campaigning on her part. American women seemed to have the numbers and the willingness to put her in office.

Hillary had something that American woman desperately wanted and needed. She had the power and the pulpit to make US society fair for them, to cut them a break so that they didn't have to work longer and harder than men to survive and thrive. Women have waited more than a century for equal rights, and they are reaching like never before to secure their rights.

The problem was, Hillary continued her small campaign rallies during August, September, and October. The people needed a break from all the scandals but Clinton was desperate, panicked, and angry. She played hardball with younger women about women's rights, and you could see the light go out in their eyes as she bullied them. She offered nothing to replace Bernie's campaign promises to improve people's earnings and support their dreams, instead she mocked those hopes. Her campaign became heavy with Cold War propaganda, and her people told too many stupid lies and made dumb excuses about election meddling and Russian spys who were hiding under American beds. Younger, smarter voters were already immersed in social media and knew exactly how it worked. They immediately realized how ignorant and preposterous Clinton's tale of Russian election meddling on Facebook was. (It was the 2016 version of the Chinese Spy Balloon fiasco.)

Hillary might have won the election if it had been held in September. But the dumb, evidence free conspiracy theories about Putin and Russia-bots was just too clueless. Younger mothers and working women had much more important things to do in November 2016, than vote Ibn an election where both candidates were intolerable. Plus, voting on a November work and school day is fine for 1845 agrarian farmers, but it is a really inconvenient day for busy, stressed out families. Typical constitutional dysfunction and voter suppression.

Hillary's right. Too many women didn't come out and vote for her.

::

At first, I dismissed the concerns about Hillary taking Joe's place in the 2024 election. But on reflection, I think this is something that could happen. Clinton has the Key qualification for the US Presidency: She's a psychopath. Plus, she has a compelling platform to run on — reclaiming women's abortion and reproductive rights.

I can see the Dems believing that Hillary is their ace in the hole; and women would probably show up and vote this time. They've learned their lesson. for sure. And it's a smooth transition: Hillary is a Neocon, so Congress still gets their defense-spending bonuses and insider stock tips. And the People will get their violent, expensive Empire wars regardless of who is elected. Clinton could even get a free ride into office as Biden's VP, replacing Kamala. That way she would barely have to campaign at all.

@Pluto's Republic

She had the power to do that, but like you said she would probably pull an Obama and immediately tell those women to go sit at the back of the bus. If they want the same rights Her has they need to marry a president, get elected in a state that’s not her home.

She had the power and the pulpit to make US society fair for them, to cut them a break so that they didn't have to work longer and harder than men to survive and thrive. Women have waited more than a century for equal rights, and they are reaching like never before to secure their rights.

And create a non profit foundation that breaks every rule it can to launder money for favors. Oh yeah and break every government records keeping rules on the book and then defy a congressional subpoena and destroy the ones she wants.

Also she has to steal the billions of dollars that the world donated for the most desperate people in the world…
Then they would have to threaten a local FBI officer to keep child trafficking and kiddie porn away from being exposed. That’s why Comey wrote the letter to congress just before the election. Hillary griping about it was to throw sand over the allegations.

On abortion rights I can’t believe the base is going to once again don their Charlie Brown shirt and believe that Lucy won’t pull the football this time. I think one of the biggest reasons why she lost was because she was followed Obama’s 8 years of betraying the base. He screwed the pooch to death. No more pooch to screw for anyone following him.

Here come the Russians again

Sometimes I’d rather not be right. In January, reacting to Donald Trump affectionately referring to the trio of tyrants Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, and Kim Jong Un as “very fine people,” I wrote that two constants in the Trump Era are his affection for murderous authoritarians and Russian efforts to screw with American politics. The former is well-known, the latter, less recognized. Moscow mounted information warfare operations to boost Trump during both the 2016 election—most notably, the hack-and-leak attack in which Russian cyber-operatives swiped Democratic emails and documents and WikiLeaks released them—and the 2020 election, when Russian intelligence operatives spread disinformation about Joe and Hunter Biden and Ukraine. The first op helped the Putin-friendly Trump reach the White House; the second failed to keep him in office, but it had the side-benefit of fueling the House Republicans’ baseless (and now fizzling) impeachment crusade against President Biden. Putin went one for two.

(So lying to congress isn’t a crime-sd)

Two weeks ago, Avril Haines, the director of national intelligence, testified to the Senate Intelligence Committee that Russia remains “the most active foreign threat to our elections.” She noted that the Kremlin’s “goals in such influence operations tend to include eroding trust in US democratic institutions, exacerbating sociopolitical divisions in the United States, and degrading Western support to Ukraine.”

(Like Russia needs to help Americans be upset about the unchecked flood of immigrants?)

Russian state media and online accounts tied to the Kremlin have spread and amplified misleading and incendiary content about US immigration and border security.

The New York Times reported recently that a disinformation operation—most likely mounted by Russians—has been circulating a video that purports to disclose the existence of a troll farm in Ukraine that is being run by the CIA and targeting the US election to prevent Trump’s election. It’s a clever instance of cyber-gaslighting, for it is Russian trolls who are disseminating fakery to hurt Biden and help Trump.

(Prigozhin is dead yet dolt!)

The group most likely includes veterans of the Internet Research Agency, a Kremlin-aligned troll farm that sought to influence the 2016 election.”

That’s all I could stomach to read. Corn Job must not have noticed that everything he wrote has been thoroughly debunked. Or he’s just trying to get shitlibs back on board the Russia Russia Russia gate boat.

This on top of the Hellabitch blaming everyone, but her wicked self for losing the easiest election in history.

It brought back some memories of younger days. My mother was a big Pete Seeger and Judy Collins fan. So I often heard their music around the house. Always enjoyed their songs. Thanks for the history LO!

I'm somewhat concerned about this report although it could just be one of those routine scare tactics/propaganda moves in msm. I think the Yoon administration is in big trouble here and actually needs some national security crisis to deflect the domestic political crisis ongoing in South Korea right now.

Here's a Hankyoreh article that addresses the domestic crisis in a summary fashion:

Insider confirmed Yoon ‘lost temper’ when briefed on investigation into Marine’s death

The remarks by a person in attendance at the briefing on July 31, 2023, are thought to substantiate rumors that the president grew angry when learning that a division commander would be handed over to police to be charged with professional negligence resulting in death

.
So Yoon directly interfered in the investigation to change its outcome.

I wrote a lengthy analysis based upon South Korean news reports on the potential implications of the disclosure of evidence of Yoon's interference in the independent investigation by a ROK Marine colonel and his team into Corporal Chae's death. Col. Park's report recommended referral of 8 military personnel from the 1st Marine Division Commander on down be investigated by police. On Yoon's order the report was scrapped, and only two lower ranking personnel were referred for investigation. Col. Park who wrote and forwarded the report against orders coming at the Presidents direction was charged with insubordination. The whole issue was subject to a major demonstration by the opposition all day Saturday led by Lee Jae-myung and Cho Guk. Imo the affair is similar in dynamics to Watergate in the US, but it still remains to be seen if Yoon's impeachment will be the outcome.

(Source- MBC News 5.26.2024) Opposition leaders Cho Guk and Lee Jae-myung together at the head of street demonstration near city hall, Seoul, 5.26.

Demonstrations in Seoul on the City Hall plaza led by the opposition parties, and their leaders Lee Jae-myung and Cho Guk, both victims themselves of politically inspired investigations believed to have been prompted by Yoon Seok-yeol, drew twenty thousand to the streets all day Saturday to listen to them and leaders of 20 social and civic organizations that support the passage of the special investigation legislation in a reconsideration of the vetoed bill next Tuesday near the end of the 21st session of the National Assembly. At this point, it's reported that the democratic "pan opposition" parties in the National Assembly need 17 defections from the conservative PPP party to attain a veto proof bill. It will be a secret ballot. 4 defections (ital pyo), from the PPP are apparently confirmed by PPP members who publicly supported passage of the bill. The High Public Officials Crime unit investigation is regarded as insufficient, both in scope, and its legal impact. The investigation has been slow walked so far because of lack of investigative resources by one account. In any case, their investigative findings and records will be forwarded to the prosecutors for further investigation and potential prosecution. The weakness there is that most Public Prosecutor District Branch Chiefs have been recently replaced with prosecutors close to, or known to be loyal to President Yoon, the former prosecutor general.

PPP Assembly members and party spokespeople say the Public Officials Crime investigation is enough, and no special investigation law is necessary. The opposition maintains that Yoon's recent vetoes of special investigation protects his own wrongdoing, or that of family members, his wife in particular. Therefore matters alleging presidential office misconduct cannot be handled without the appointment of a special investigation team. Cho Guk, who was a former law professor, made the case that other highly regarded law professors regard abuse of the veto power by the presidency, as a constitutional violation justifying impeachment. There must be a reasonably objective justification for a presidential veto. As a constitutional power the presidential veto cannot be exercised simply to protect oneself or one's family members from investigation for criminal misconduct.

Yoon has vetoed ten bills passed by the National Assembly thus far in his administration. The only other president who had vetoed more was Syngman Rhee, the first president of South Korea whose administration, involved in politically motivated massacres and assassinations, was little more than an inept dictatorship by Korean standards compared to its later dictators.

(Source- MBC News 5.26.2024)

Noticeable among the demonstators was the presence of members of the Federation of the Marine Corps Reserve. These veterans of the ROK Marine Corps are bi-partisan and there are many conservatives among them. They are incensed that Col. Park has been publicly vilified as a "liar" for political purposes by the administration and want a special investigation. They feel that the commandant has betrayed his loyalty to the Marines.

What is the big deal? The South Korean republic shaken by the death of one young marine corporal? In South Korea, historically, the death of just one person, unjustly, unfairly or dismissed by officialdom for political purposes could be enough in some circumstances to cause a political storm. In this case, the interference by the administration in the negligent homicide investigation of Cpl. Chae's death appeared politically motivated, because the Defense Miniser Lee Jong-sup was implicated. Then the President Yoon unwisely appointed Lee as South Korea's ambassador to Australia. That created the impression that this was done to get him out of the country so he could not be questioned by investigators. The former defense minister has denied the president was involved or he himself ever implied the president was involved in obstructing or influencing the investigation. Furthermore, interfering in investigations is a known modus operandi of Yoon, in his past history as Prosecutor General, and in senior prosecutor positions. This is one of the major issues that has been shaking the Korean republic for years, political prosecutions and the need to place checks on excessive prosecutorial powers. Yoon has done everything in his power to "privatize" prosecutorial power in his own hands and obstuct any reforms.

soryang's picture

@on the cusp ...or read the original article I wrote. I edited out the ending:

(Source- Channel A News Korea 5.14.2024 ) Col. Park pictured above. "At the VIP hosted presidential office meeting, concerning the results of the First Marine Division investigation, I heard the VIP exploded in anger." This is the substance of what Col. Park reported was told in his phone conversation by Marine Commandant Kim.

In two senses then, the Chae matter can be viewed as the straw that may break the camel's back. The Yoon administration has been responsible for mishandling more than one public disaster since it came to office. Most notorious was the "Halloween crush" disaster in Itaewon (which ironically was not too far from the presidential office building when it occurred in 2022). The investigation follow-up and consequences to public officials for negligence which resulted in over 150 deaths was also regarded as insufficient and a coverup to protect high ranking officials. There were also two flood disasters beside that involving Corporal Chae, that had fatal consequences that were viewed as the result of government neglect or incompetence... The improper assignment of untrained and poorly equipped marines to recover civilian remains is another flood disaster which ultimately resulted in Corporal Choi's death was therefore viewed as a highly sensitive matter politically, and the presidential office was motivated to interfere with the investigation.

*Yecheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do July 15 heavy rains; July 17 2023 Naeseongchan stream still swollen by flooding; Marines assigned to recover the bodies of 9 victims still missing; during search operations, Cpl. Chae Sang-byeong was overcome by the flooding river and swept away, his body was found 14 hours later at 11pm.

July 30-Aug 2, 2023, the period during which outside interference in his investigation occurred according to Col. Park. Park's investigation began after Park had reported the results of his investigation to the Marine Commandant 7.28.

Sorry to get into the weeds on this. I've been following prosecutor Yoon's antics and the corruption of the administration of justice in South Korea for four years now. I recognized the threat he posed to South Korea for a long time.

and congress responded to them and passing bills against them for Israel is what will cause the rise in anti semitism, but this guy says what I couldn’t put into words.

Those who oppose the protests, whether Congresspersons, pundits, AIPAC or Joe Biden tell us that the protests are antisemitic. What is their justification for this label? Because, they say, Israel and Jewry are one and the same, and to condemn Israel’s policies and actions is to condemn all Jews. Declaring that anti-Zionism amounts to antisemitism is another way of saying the same thing. But this equation of Jews and Israel is not only false, it will come back to bite. Why? Because the acceptance of this false equation can easily lead to blaming all Jews for the atrocities committed by the state of Israel. And this in turn can generate a great deal of hatred of Jews in the world. Have those who equate Jewry and Israel understood this? Do they care that their view can lead to a wave of antisemitism? Do those in Congress who spout this view in public hearings know the consequences of what they are doing? Does Genocide Joe have a clue about it?

Which AIPAC/MIC/pharma/bank bought politician are you going to vote for? Don’t be surprised when nothing changes.

Voting is like driving with a toy steering wheel.

@snoopydawg Jews of the non-Zionist sector likely already sense some growing resentment or even hatred towards them.

Caitlin’s article on this

This happens to have occurred at precisely the same time viral attention is coming to an article The Atlantic (archived) published a few days ago which includes the assertion that killing children is legally permissible under certain circumstances.

Writing that allowing journalists into Gaza would be a “risk” for Israel because “war is ugly”, The Atlantic’s Graeme Wood uses the phrase “legally killed child” to argue that journalistic footage of dead children which Israel killed lawfully would still be damaging to Israeli PR interests.

There are many people defending Israel doing this barbaric act and I have been given them hell. I ask them if it was their children being bombed like this would they still think it’s acceptable. Gah!…..1-800-bitch-slap.

I can’t watch the videos of this attack. Israel told people to move to this area because it was safe and then they fucking bombed it. Caitlin describes how babies have been beheaded and there bodies…..Recent polls showed that 60% or more of Israelis approve of the Gaza genocide.

@snoopydawg of Israelis support the genocide.
I go out of my way to distinguish Jews from Israeli policy, and Israelis from Zionism, and yet, the US government would define my stance against this genocide as anti-Semitic because our government says they are one and the same.
I will watch the videos. I will bear witness. I consider it a duty, and it doesn't traumatize me. It steels my resolve.

@snoopydawg

my older friends all felt Israel has a right to defend themselves, but not the Palestinians. The young folks there had the opposite opinion. The Propaganda machine is powerful, and there's a reason they want to get rid of TikTok.

Not only have I always enjoyed him for his perspective and sincerity, but for his melodic Scottish accent as well.

There are many of Scottish descent here, and originally their English speech was the most challenging for me to understand. All these years later it is my favourite speech, and so perfectly expressed by Neil Oliver.

@janis b thinking. And, like you, I love his accent.
I had a trip to Scotland booked that got canceled due to COVID. I think I would have understood the Scots better than working class Brits in small villages and rural areas outside sophisticated London. i could hardly hold a conversation with them!

I felt continually embarrassed by my inability to understand such different accents and expressions of the English language. After asking someone to repeat themselves for the second time, and still not understanding, I would just acknowledge the comment with a shake of my head and leave with no more clarity. In time it all made sense, thankfully ; ).

I remarked that our national anthem should be Your Land is Your Land. :-). snoop, I think that commenter you quoted earlier in this thread meant to say gobsmacked. I am opposed to all war and warmongers, no exceptions. You notice how the vast majority of them are male? I call tRump, the Orange Maggot. Anyone favoring him needs to have a serious brain exam. Female trash like $hrillary and Albright are every bit as bad and stupid! NCTim helped me learn to post tune links on here years ago, but I forgot how in my aged state. LOL. Rec'd for the tunes and conversation. Hope everyone is staying cool today. Smile

@orlbucfan was originally a popular drinking song, and the lyrics were replaced by the mighty tribute to war.
America the Beautiful would be a better choice, but it doesn't stir the military to go kill people.
