Friday Night Photos Aviation Edition
Submitted by Socialprogressive on Fri, 04/05/2024 - 5:00pm
Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.
With all the recent problems in the aircraft and airline industry in the news these days, I thought since I haven't been to the San Diego Air and Space Museum in a half dozen years, a visit was in order. I'm happy to say, while I was there no door plugs blew out, no panels fell off, no engines flamed out and no emergency landings were required. It wasn't all rainbows and lollypops though, as they once again managed to lose my luggage.

That is quite an array of flying machines

had a model Stuka dive bomber as a kid
with a tiny engine on a string harness to fly
around tethered by strings. Didn't last long.
Once it got up to speed, total faceplate.
Didn't anticipate the dive aspect at the time.

thanks for your camera magic
Hi, QMS.
I played around with the small gas engine fly by wire planes when I was in my early teens. I believe Cox built the Stuka. It was a handful to fly. I know I wrecked more than one.
Nice image of the Stuka.

Hi pixelators
Hi all, Hey SP!
Great plane pics man! Some neat stuff there... Most of my plane pics are slides or unscanned prints. Prolly posted these before... maybe some newbies here?
F-18 on takeoff
F-8 Bearcat - guy doesn't know which side goes up...
TF-51 - the two seat trainer model...
I love them in their natural habitat.
Hope all are well! Happy trails!

Hi, dystopian
Nice plane photos. I don't recall seeing any of them before. The port side landing gear on that F-18 looks a little askew.

gear retraction
Re: the landing gear: That is normal retraction, they are not simultaneous as many planes. It was just off the ground a second or few. Was an AB (afternburner) short-strip takeoff from Hawthorne Airport in L.A.! It was so low when it passed over me I felt a nanosecond heat-flash. As fast as I could advance film and wheel around and regain target I got one shot of it going away with tailpipe flame but AB was already off. Shooting airshows is great fun if you ask me. Best if you can have the right light angle (not usually), blue skies, and a good uncluttered background.
Have a well-focused weekend!

Hi d
Your photos resemble birds, insects and a whale. Without birds and insects who would have thought of flying machines?
Hi Social
Consider yourself lucky to have only lost your luggage ; ).
The Ford Tri-Motor image is wonderful. It would go well with some of your insect portraits. Thank you for your interesting and fanciful studies.
Thank you, Janis
I'll have to play around with the Tri-motor image in photoshop and see if I can get it to look more bug like.

Hi all
Another design in sand ...
Enjoy the weekend and be well.
Hi, Janis
Nice sand shot. It's always interesting seeing the different patterns the water carves in the sand.

Obviously I agree!

lines in the sand...
Great image, I love yer lines in the sand. Never see the same thing twice. It is something very real and solidly tangible and describable, but also lets the mind go anywhere it wants. A great two-fer!
Thanks as always!
Happy trails!

Looking at those old planes
brought back some very fond, and very old, childhood memories. I remember being about 5-6 and riding the D.C.-LaGuardia Shuttle (pre-JFK I. A.) aboard the old turboprop commercial Constellations. I just had to have a window seat. I'm sure I drove my parents nuts! LOL. That was going to see my father's family on Long Island. My maternal grandfather, on the other hand, worked the graveyard shift for Pan Am at Miami International. When we came down for a visit, he would take me to a spot at the end of one of the runways on his days off. We would watch the early commercial jets take off. You sure as h3ll's bells can't do it now!! I was in absolute little kid heaven. Enjoying the pics, you all. Hope all are well. Rec'd!!

Hi, orlbucfan
What great memories. Factoid. The Constellation was built in Southern California.
I was 6-7 the first time I flew. It was on a Douglas DC-6. I went with my dad on a flight from San Fransisco to Fresno to visit his dad. In those days everybody wore their Sunday best when they flew.
