Friday Night Photos Not Quite Woodstock Edition

Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.

I wasn't sure what photos I was going to post for tonights FNP until I read Sima's OT yesterday morning and decided to keep the music theme going. These are from a small two day music festival I attended about five years ago. The festival is held the last weekend in July every year at Greenhorn Mountain Park near Kernville, Ca. All the musicians and bands are from the Ridgecrest area.

So you were there then.
Sorry, a bit slow on the uptake.
Missed that, but did 'experience' the California Jam
circa 1974 at the Ontario Motor Speedway.

I would loved to have been there. I did make it to a couple of the Day on the Green concerts in the mid 70s when I was living in the Bay Area.

@QMS Hey Capt. !

Long live the memories of California Jam, April 6, 1974. Lots of Cal Jam vids on youtube. Search Keith Emerson flying piano to see a great sight gag involving a piano (they would not play upside down due to gravity). A buddy and I email each other every year on that date. We were there. I smuggled what seemed the only 24 Michelob glass bottles into the place for the gang (I did not drink then). It was worth it for the XL slug of electric koolaid. Heady days... I was blown away by both Rare Earth, and Earth, Wind, and Fire. They were incredible. Rare Earth did that long version (was a whole 22 min. side on album) of Get Ready. Amazing. Of course we knew the Eagles, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and ELP would be great.

long live rock!

Perhaps you are older than my measly 68 years on this spaceship.
Was referring to cultural happenings in and around the 60's and 70's.
Bopped around to see some good ones, as I was interested in the
cultural movements of the times. Hope you saw some of it anyway.

A lot of great music came from the Golden Bear State. Much more than the Sandbar Peninsula. Fer Sure! I remember all the acts you all are talking about. Great vibes!

I don't know what year that was but it can't be later than 1970 since that's the year Hendrix died. Whatever year it was, it was before my concert going days which began in 75 when I was 18.

@Socialprogressive Hi all, SP,

Monterey Pop Festival was June 16-18, 1967. Brian Jones was there too. It was the kickoff event for "The Summer of Love". Unfortunately I was waaaaay too young for it but it was what I was listening to then.

Great live photos and music video.

Thanks for the personal and intimate flavour you’ve initiated. I've really enjoyed the conversation you all are having, and all that is shared.

I have a date on face time with my sister very soon, but I will try to post something to contribute tomorrow.

Enjoy the weekend all, and be well.

Hi all, Hey SP!

Hope you didn't get rained out SP! Great photos as always...

The Greenhorn Mountains are biologically often considered the southernmost-most extension of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It was the furthest south Pileated Woodpeckers for instance, as well as a number of Sierra Nevada flora and faunas. Used to camp up hear highest point in a state park in the 60's when I was a kid. There were regular Blue Grouse (now Sooty Grouse) in the campground, including moms with chicks walking around. I think Big Horse Meadows was the name of one good spot up there. Wonderful area.

Always loved that song, Monterey....

@dystopian a bald eagle flew from a large vacant lot, over the highway
over the car.
Another day in paradise.
Moments like that are so sublime, I say to myself, "Kill me now, Lord", although I am not convinced there is one.

@Socialprogressive

So if you are near a large river, lake, bay or estuary, you are more likely to be able to see 'em.

Out West Virginia way, there's a sightseeing train that runs along the upper Potomac River, called the "Potomac Eagle" because that area is bald eagle country and you're almost certain of seeing at least one per trip.

Thanks for the tip. The problem isn't knowing where to find Bald Eagles. The problem is there just aren't that many in the county to see. Probably less than a dozen.

dystopian's picture

@TheOtherMaven Hi ToM,

Baldies' preferred food is fish

They are as good a pirates as they are fisherman. They are a nightmare for any nearby nesting Osprey. Ben Franklin did not think a thief should be the national symbol. Though as it turns out, fairly accurate. Ben wanted the Beaver, for its industriousness. For something so big it is amazing how deft they are to steal fish from Ospreys. Often as lakes freeze up and all the ducks are concentrated, they take lots of ducks too.

Just saw the Big Bear pair just laid its first egg of the season.

When I was a kid in the 60's they were MUCH rarer than they are now, having made quite the comback, much like Peregrine, and Brown Pelican, since we got rid of DDT sales here. Very few saw the national symbol back then. Great now there are so many places people can see them again.

take care!

@Socialprogressive Hi SP!

Those males are beautiful. In fall and winter very small numbers are found at mostly coastal socal sites especially where blooming Blue Gum Eucs as nectar means bees (their fav) all winter. They nest in or around our yard here. I think Lookout has breeding Summer and Scarlet Tanager at his place in bamy. In the west in summer they are fairly strictly a riparian corridor species. Cottonwoods, willows, Sycamores, etc. along a watercourse.

male Summer Tanager. For the female it does not pay to stand out especially when incubating.

produced a tremendous amount of talented performing/songwriting artists, Sp. I love outdoor festivals, and went to plenty of them. I like the variety of photos in this week's post. Our area of the slowly sinking Sandbar Peninsula has been avoiding the winter disasters hitting the rest of the Eastern side of the country. Hopefully, that luck will hold when Storm Season rolls around again. Sighhh. Rec'd!!

Florida is no slouch when it comes to musical artist. 38 Special, Jimmy Buffett, Blackfoot, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Outlaws, Rossington Collins Band. I'd go to a concert with that lineup any day. Hope you have continued good weather.

@Socialprogressive Surely one of most musically advanced prog bands ever, that flew totally under the radar outside the southeast was the Dixie Dregs. Most LA people were not aware, it was a word of mouth cult, no radio play. Twenty stars out of ten. Amazing awesome music. STEVE fn MORSE! I think they were U of FL students originally. Check it out if you don't know it folks...

Much later I saw Steve play a solo show at a supper club at point blank. OMFG!

(with the brilliant Duane Allman) to that list. And Tom Petty, the Gainesville, FL cracker (native). Yeah, you two are right, Sp and dystopian. I just lost a very, very beloved BFF over the Holidays. She actually dated the lead singer of Molly Hatchett. Boy, she would jump my sh## when I started the sex, drugs, and groupie rock star rap. She said--no way. It was a job, granted, a job all involved loved. A lot of the dudes either grew out of it, or just weren't interested. They were just as monogamous as folks like us. In fact, after she broke up amicably with the singer, he met and married the gal he raised a family with. She lost contact with him and went on with her life. I gotta tell ya, my educated (?) music fan eyeballs hit the ground when she told me about it. Smile
