12/25 is Miraculous. or so it seems

Templo de Horus en Edfu

~~ Horus

For reasons unknown to ordinary humans, there were many miraculous births of gods and demigods on this date in history. I do see that the above could be redundant, because any birth of any god would be somewhat miraculous but these were, each of them phenomenal in some manner as to the procreation and or birthing. Beyond that, many were presanged or attended by variouos celestial phenomena and other signs and wonders. I have listed those that I'm aware of from "southwestern asia", aka "the middle east". God only knows (HEH) how many there were outside of that relatively small area.

Gods and demigods who had miraculous births on December 25 with approximate years of birth:

Horus, 3,000 bce
Zarathustra, 1,000 bce
Krishna, 900 bce
Hercules, 800 bce
Mithras, 600 bce
Dionysus, 500 bce
Thamuz, 400 bce
Hermes, 200 bce
Adonis, 200 bce
Jesus Christ, 0 bce

The followers of all but one of these were pagans. The followers of the other one were periodically exhorted to go forth and exterminate or convert all pagans and heathens, even those arising far outside of the borders of that small patch of earth. They generally did a pretty good job of it too. Off the top of my head, the Albigensians (Cathars), Old Prussians, and Taino were among the exterminated, while the descendants of the Kievan Rus were largely, after a long time, converted. The tide may be shifting currently due to a resurgence of paganism, the advance of various empirical belief systems, and the growth in numbers of "others". Beyond that, many self styled followers of the one true god are, in reality, totally devoted to Mammon.

So, go forth and celebrate or worship whom and what you will, or, alternatively;

"An it harm none, do what ye will."

For all of that, give me Yosa Buson, an Edo poet and painter often ranked with Basho, who died this day in 1784.

spices are extra special now

baharat-middle-eastern-spice-mix-1-683x1024.jpg

The special part about this Baharat recipe is not just its tiny list of ingredients. It’s the magic flavour they create when they come together.

The Arabic word for spices, “baharat” refers to a Middle Eastern seasoning blend that’s also known as Lebanese seven-spice blend. The mixture varies by region but it typically contains some combination of black pepper, allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander, cumin, paprika, cardamom and cloves.

Thanks, enjoying the music a great deal. Fortunately, I'm with family today for Christmas. It's been a great get together.

Are those haiku by Yosa Buson? I enjoy the economy of words in those little poems and haven't revisited them in some time. My mother introduced me when I was a teenager. Now all of sudden in my old age I'm fascinated with these little poems. Thanks for reminding me.

Yosa Buson

I don't get the rules of the short Chinese poems yet. They are conforming to a structure like haiku do. I first found this one below yesterday on youtube. Of course, it had to be explained but I can see why it's famous. I found a blog of someone who enjoys translating them-

Classical Chinese Poems in English

李商隱 Li Shangyin: 登樂遊原 Ascending the Pleasurable Plateau

Li Shangyin (813-858)

1 It’s late in the day, my heart’s not well at ease;
2 To the ancient plateau, up, in a carriage I go.
3 (Sublime is the beauty of the sun while yet unset,)
Sublime is the time while the sun is yet to set; (revised 30.10.17)
4 Too soon, alas, is dusky darkness to follow.

Translated by Andrew W.F. Wong (Huang Hongfa)

I worked a few days on my amateur translation of one of the Jewel in the Crown OST themes (Kdrama):

천애지아 天崖至睋~ 하늘 끝에 이르는 바람 ~ 장나라 ( Jang Na Ra )
Gaze from Heaven's Cliff: Wish Arising at the Edge of Heaven

The sky above, the whisper of wind painted with tears
Follow that beautiful light, there within fall asleep.

The place that bears all longing, in dim memory, that place
to which dreams, like wild flowers, disappear, heaven's flowers.

Sunset, sunset, bring down the heavens,
the dream path resounds calling.
Sunset, sunset, even the starlight cries out,

Yearning arises, walk the dream path

Above the sky, the whisper of wish drawn with tears
Follow that beautiful light, there within fall to sleep

The place that bears all longing within dim memory, that place
to which dreams, like wild flowers, disappear, heaven's flowers.

Sunset, sunset, bring down the heavens

The dream path resounds with ringing sound
Sunset, sunset, even the starlight cries out

Sunset, sunset, bring the sky down
The dream path resounds calling.
Sunset, sunset, even the starlight cries out

Longing arises, walk the path of dreams

Jang Na Ra is the singer.

After some rain, the ground was soft enough for me to yank or shovel out some weeds. I do not know the name, but they have dark leaves, small yellow flowers, and they came to my home in a bale of hay 30 years ago. If you mow or clip them back, their main stems thicken and become very woody. No amount of sun, ice, rain, or drought will kill them. I yanked up about 100 of them in the last two days.
Now, the plan is a Christmas dinner of beef ribs cooked in the Instantpot, our present to each other. We haven't seen beef ribs at the local store in a couple of years, so we went to a meat market 15 miles away a couple of days ago and purchased some. Yesterday, we went to the local store to get a couple of items for the Big Ass Meal, and what was in the meat sale bin? 4 packages of beef ribs! The coolest part of this is that I do not know how to cook in the Instantpot, and am so occupied doing things, like...(fill in the blank.)

@enhydra lutris that the bones fell out of the ribs and back into the pot. They never made it to the plate! Dear One did use a recipe he found online.
When I was a child, some family member or acquaintance was seriously injured by a pressure cooker. From the time I was 2 or 3, I heard about how deadly those cookers can be. We did not use them, and nobody in my vast family used them. I suppose I have a mental block, and will leave Instantpot cooking to other brave chefs.
In truth, I am perfectly content to sit around like a pampered princess, and work up an appetite that way.

Now, I am making the potato salad. I did chop up cabbage for the coleslaw. I need rest. I need time for contemplation. Otherwise, I would screw up the potato salad. We just can't have that.
