Friday Night Photos Shapes and Patterns Edition

Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.

Another week of nice weather with sunny blue skies and day time temps in the low to mid 70s. It has been getting cold at night though. The last few mornings it's been in the mid 30s. Gotta enjoy the nice weather while it lasts. There's rain in the forecast for most of next week.

All these shapes and patterns except the high voltage tower were taken yesterday morning in Old Town San Diego.

Thanks for the patterns. Took my camera out for a drive today and caught this
little mill creek and Amish buggy in the neighborhood.

@QMS
Looks like you had a very good drive with your camera today. The Amish value the old ways but I see they put modern reflectors on their buggies. Is or was there a working mill at the mill creek?

@Socialprogressive

It was once a sluice running a grain mill. No longer. But much of the original stonework
is still in place. Yeah, the buggy has a battery box hanging beneath the cab to power
the running lights.

Thank you for the scenes from picturesque Rhode Island.

I especially like the image of your shadow with the solitary shape and shadow of the buggy. The two different directions of your shadows is a bit confusing to me?

I've had the radio station playing in the background for the last half hour. It’s quite an interesting and mellow selection of different cultural music. It's very moody. Thank you.

@QMS Hey Capt.!

Great pix man! Excellent framing with the tree trunks, I have taken shots just like that! Smile

Nice buggy too. I guess the Amish would not have a 'pimp my buggy' show?

In case anyone hasn't heard these guys... they are great!

there's lot’s of sunshine and colour in the shapes and patterns. Is live music a part of the atmosphere? Would you find a mixture of locals and visitors there?

Thank you for sharing your traveling photographic eye. Thank you also for being such a welcoming host.

Sometimes there is live music but not on a daily basis. As well as being a tourist destination, San Diego is very culturally diverse so you hear a lot of different languages when you're out and about.

Hi all, Hey SP!

Great shapes and patterns! Most excellent work SP! I like the blankets. Those things are awesome. We have a nice big one, which has (surprise) fish on it. Warm, wonderful blankets. Great throws.

Here is a sorta shapey song... I guess they had wifi guitars. Wink Is the drummer even hitting the snare? I liked this song when I was 13.

be back in a minute with a pic or two...

@Socialprogressive Yeah, everything was lip-synched in those days. Most of the music vids from TV in the 60's are such. Only the biggest most powerful could insist on playing it themselves live as a rule then. There is a great vid I forget which song, of Jefferson Airplane doing this, maybe Somebody to Love. But Jack Cassady on bass to make fun of it and show his contempt, wrapped his guitar cord/plug all around the neck a few times, just to make sure everyone knew. ROFL.

be well amigo!

The smiling woman is actually from the snow snake last week.

It’s hard to believe that it’s the middle of December and we have only gotten one snow storm. Nothing on the horizon either and it’s going to be close to 50. When the sun is out it’s a heatwave. Weird how that works. 50 is usually freezing in the summer, but after 30's for awhile it’s very pleasant in the winter.

Hi all,

Hope everyone is good out there...

I did some shapey/patterny stuff recently and only having a few percent of my pics available handy in digital format... don't want to repeat too soon...

a couple pics from last week at the local city park, the yellow leavs are Mulberry.
UP120823b.jpg

Mulberries on right, the rusty and leaf litter is Cypress. I should be in 18" of water standing where I was, bone dry as you can see. Our river is FOUR FEET below normal bank currently due to the drought.
UP120823a.jpg

On the sea of rusty fallen Cypress leaflets, the Mulberry leaf stands out. But the little yellow butterfly, creatively named Little Yellow, doesn't if it perches on that leaf.

Is that the Mulberry tree famous for its satiny silk?

up

dystopian's picture

@janis b Howdy Janis,

I have no idea about any relation between Mulberry and silk. Please enlighten me. I do remember something about the 'ring around the Mulberry bush/tree', a childhood rhyme. The fruit are off the charts delicious. There are male, female, and bisexual trees. The one in our yard is a male so all we get is pollen, by the tons for a week or so. Those in the park/photos are females, you will find me there the first week of May. If you want to know all the birds in an acre or five, just watch the fruiting Mulberry tree. Late April to mid-May is prime time for fruit. The winter Cedar Waxwings leave in May when the last Mulberry is eaten.

@dystopian

The leaves of the Mulberry tree are hosts to silk worms. ‘Mulberry’ silk is the most luxurious silk I have ever felt.

This was an industry that ran throughout the south of France, from Lyons southwards and across the north of Italy. When the postman delivered a batch of silkworm eggs, the Madame of the household would keep them safely incubated in a pouch on her bosom. This meant that most of the income of the household was entrusted to Madam’s bosom, so she had to be careful!

As the caterpillars hatched, they would be put onto fresh mulberry leaves and would immediately start eating. The noise made by thousands of munching caterpillars could sound like falling rain. The leaves were laid out in each room on big beds made of split cane. Each room would have perhaps 6-8 beds from floor to roof, the beds being open with no sides or cover as the caterpillars do not go anywhere. There would be a narrow row down the middle of the room between the tiers of beds, so that they could be supplied with mulberry leaves.

I'd like to taste fresh mulberries. It looks like the only way is to grow your own or know someone who has one. I did discover that I can buy them dried.

dystopian's picture

@janis b @janis b Thanks Janis,

I never paid any attention to those as a domestic thing and not 'wild'. We have a number of wonderful silk months in America, but none make the good silk apparently. Attempts were made but they didn't work out. Silk moths are in family, Saturnidae with many of what most consider the most spectacular of moths. Things like the Luna Moths, the Cercropia and Polyphemus moths, the Io Moth, etc. I think the Atlas Moth (biggest in world) is a silk moth too. I never see any indication on the Mulberries that there are cats on them, the leaves a the end of every season are all still without any caterpillar consumption indications. The one case I know of here with Luna Moth, Pecan was the foodplant. While some butterflies and moths are generalists, most have a specific plant or few that are the larval foodplant. That is, where the lay eggs, on the larval foodplant. Monarchs on milkweeds, etc.

Thanks for the info!

patterns in nature subjects. I've never seen a Mulberry tree let alone taste it's fruit. It's not something you find in the produce section at the local grocery stores around here. The Little Yellow is aptly named. It is little and it is yellow.

both red and white varieties (the names do not refer to the fruit, which is generally reddish-purple when ripe). The fruit can be eaten (and makes great jam and preserves) but doesn't pack or travel well (too mushy) so isn't a commercial product.

@Socialprogressive We once had Mulberry trees at our county courthouse. We kids would go to the building on weekends, climb up stars, grab berries from low limbs, eat a few. Then, my parents said not to eat them due to worms. ? I then grabbed one, held the ends in each hand, then pushed my hands together to squish the berry. White worms came out of every part of the berry, and I had as many worms in my hand as juice. Once I realized I had been eating berry flavored worms, I lost the taste for them.
Great pictures everywhere this evening! Why am not not surprised? Lol!

@on the cusp Amazing OtC,

Wow, thanks for that! We do not have a worm issue here, I have never seen it or heard of it. Wonder what it is eating them? Most of what folks call 'worms' in trees are moth caterpillars of various sorts. Just think of all the protein in them! Wink

@dystopian tiny, white, and pissed about being squeezed out of their berries.
The trees were at one entrance to the courthouse. The berries fell and splattered on the side walk and steps. We expected to see worms in them, not the beautiful and delicious berries we plucked from the tree.

Well, we've got the equivalent of a winter tropical storm hitting the Sandbar Peninsula this weekend. Wind and flood watches are up. They're trying to keep the idiots out of the ocean, but good luck with that (snort!). Cool front (hard freezes are extinct now) coming which is the storm trigger. My sister loved San Diego when she lived in LA years ago. I can see why. So, hope everyone is enjoying/relaxing during this Holiday Season. You all stay safe!

My parents left CT for the sandbar as soon as they retired. Same with my brother and his wife, who live in Boynton Beach.
