Friday Night Photos Shapes and Patterns Edition
Submitted by Socialprogressive on Fri, 12/15/2023 - 5:00pm
Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.
Another week of nice weather with sunny blue skies and day time temps in the low to mid 70s. It has been getting cold at night though. The last few mornings it's been in the mid 30s. Gotta enjoy the nice weather while it lasts. There's rain in the forecast for most of next week.
All these shapes and patterns except the high voltage tower were taken yesterday morning in Old Town San Diego.

Thanks for the patterns. Took my camera out for a drive today and caught this
little mill creek and Amish buggy in the neighborhood.

question everything
Hi, QMS.
Looks like you had a very good drive with your camera today. The Amish value the old ways but I see they put modern reflectors on their buggies. Is or was there a working mill at the mill creek?
I'm great at multi-tasking. I can waste time, be unproductive, and procrastinate all at the same time.
Yes, the camera had fun
It was once a sluice running a grain mill. No longer. But much of the original stonework
is still in place. Yeah, the buggy has a battery box hanging beneath the cab to power
the running lights.
Listening to a station on the other side of the world.

Thanks for the link, QMS
Very relaxing music with an eastern flavor.

Hi Q
Thank you for the scenes from picturesque Rhode Island.
I especially like the image of your shadow with the solitary shape and shadow of the buggy. The two different directions of your shadows is a bit confusing to me?
I've had the radio station playing in the background for the last half hour. It’s quite an interesting and mellow selection of different cultural music. It's very moody. Thank you.
Howdy QMS
Great pix man! Excellent framing with the tree trunks, I have taken shots just like that!
Nice buggy too. I guess the Amish would not have a 'pimp my buggy' show?
In case anyone hasn't heard these guys... they are great!

Hi Social
there's lot’s of sunshine and colour in the shapes and patterns. Is live music a part of the atmosphere? Would you find a mixture of locals and visitors there?
Thank you for sharing your traveling photographic eye. Thank you also for being such a welcoming host.
Thank you, Janis
Sometimes there is live music but not on a daily basis. As well as being a tourist destination, San Diego is very culturally diverse so you hear a lot of different languages when you're out and about.

Thanks for the info Social
That's what I was wondering about.
Hi all
Enjoy the weekend and be well.
Hi, Janis
Very nice photos. I really love the lighting and color tones in the first one. I wonder if the colors on the foot and hand prints represent the colors on the flag of the country of the artist.

Hey J!
Great photos! I love those roofs, are they Arabic? Beautiful photo!
Do you know which green, white, and red country is being represented? Neat image!
Thanks, be well, and take care...

They're arabic lanterns, similar in style to arabic mosque architecture.
The colours represent the Kenyan and UAE flag.

Hi all, Hey SP!
Great shapes and patterns! Most excellent work SP! I like the blankets. Those things are awesome. We have a nice big one, which has (surprise) fish on it. Warm, wonderful blankets. Great throws.
Here is a sorta shapey song... I guess they had wifi guitars. Is the drummer even hitting the snare? I liked this song when I was 13.
be back in a minute with a pic or two...
Thanks for the great photos all!

Hi, dystopian
Not only is the drummer not hitting drums or cymbals, the guitars aren't plugged into any amps. Great song selection. It's been a really long time since I've heard it.

I know it's just an impression, but you can make out her face. How clever of you both ; ).
Hi, snoopy
I see Sam has been out creating more snow art. You could call them "Creations by Sam".

Great idea
The smiling woman is actually from the snow snake last week.
It’s hard to believe that it’s the middle of December and we have only gotten one snow storm. Nothing on the horizon either and it’s going to be close to 50. When the sun is out it’s a heatwave. Weird how that works. 50 is usually freezing in the summer, but after 30's for awhile it’s very pleasant in the winter.

Hi pixelators
Hi all,
Hope everyone is good out there...
I did some shapey/patterny stuff recently and only having a few percent of my pics available handy in digital format... don't want to repeat too soon...
a couple pics from last week at the local city park, the yellow leavs are Mulberry.
Mulberries on right, the rusty and leaf litter is Cypress. I should be in 18" of water standing where I was, bone dry as you can see. Our river is FOUR FEET below normal bank currently due to the drought.
On the sea of rusty fallen Cypress leaflets, the Mulberry leaf stands out. But the little yellow butterfly, creatively named Little Yellow, doesn't if it perches on that leaf.
have great ones all!

Beautifully coloured leaves
Is that the Mulberry tree famous for its satiny silk?
Hi Janis!
I have no idea about any relation between Mulberry and silk. Please enlighten me. I do remember something about the 'ring around the Mulberry bush/tree', a childhood rhyme. The fruit are off the charts delicious. There are male, female, and bisexual trees. The one in our yard is a male so all we get is pollen, by the tons for a week or so. Those in the park/photos are females, you will find me there the first week of May. If you want to know all the birds in an acre or five, just watch the fruiting Mulberry tree. Late April to mid-May is prime time for fruit. The winter Cedar Waxwings leave in May when the last Mulberry is eaten.

Hi dystopian
The leaves of the Mulberry tree are hosts to silk worms. ‘Mulberry’ silk is the most luxurious silk I have ever felt.
I'd like to taste fresh mulberries. It looks like the only way is to grow your own or know someone who has one. I did discover that I can buy them dried.
silk moths
I never paid any attention to those as a domestic thing and not 'wild'. We have a number of wonderful silk months in America, but none make the good silk apparently. Attempts were made but they didn't work out. Silk moths are in family, Saturnidae with many of what most consider the most spectacular of moths. Things like the Luna Moths, the Cercropia and Polyphemus moths, the Io Moth, etc. I think the Atlas Moth (biggest in world) is a silk moth too. I never see any indication on the Mulberries that there are cats on them, the leaves a the end of every season are all still without any caterpillar consumption indications. The one case I know of here with Luna Moth, Pecan was the foodplant. While some butterflies and moths are generalists, most have a specific plant or few that are the larval foodplant. That is, where the lay eggs, on the larval foodplant. Monarchs on milkweeds, etc.
Thanks for the info!

Thank you for the tidbits, d
I know that monarch caterpillars are picky eaters, but didn’t realise that most varieties are as well.
Trees make great
patterns in nature subjects. I've never seen a Mulberry tree let alone taste it's fruit. It's not something you find in the produce section at the local grocery stores around here. The Little Yellow is aptly named. It is little and it is yellow.

Mulberries are invasive around here
both red and white varieties (the names do not refer to the fruit, which is generally reddish-purple when ripe). The fruit can be eaten (and makes great jam and preserves) but doesn't pack or travel well (too mushy) so isn't a commercial product.
There is no justice. There can be no peace.
nail on head
You know it... we can hardly get them home a mile or two. So plastic bags to collect or you will have purple everywhere. And that purple is a great dye.

Hi, TOM
I'll have to look around and see if I can find some Mulberry jam in any of the local grocery stores.

Mulberries are delicious! Except...
Great pictures everywhere this evening! Why am not not surprised? Lol!

worms!?!
Wow, thanks for that! We do not have a worm issue here, I have never seen it or heard of it. Wonder what it is eating them? Most of what folks call 'worms' in trees are moth caterpillars of various sorts. Just think of all the protein in them!

I remember the worms being
The trees were at one entrance to the courthouse. The berries fell and splattered on the side walk and steps. We expected to see worms in them, not the beautiful and delicious berries we plucked from the tree.

I wonder why worms get such a bad rap?
; )
Hi, otc
What a shock to find out you had been eating worms. That's a memory I wouldn't want to have rattling around in my brain.

I love the 2nd picture
Great shot! I’ve always been drawn to paths because where they lead is a mystery. Yes I know that is a river, but in my mind it’s a path to somewhere.

Hey photogs! The visual level of all your pics has risen.
I can visually see it. They're looking more and more like paintings. Sp, that bottom one looks like a modern art painting. Most righteous! Like all the tune links and that one about the use of red, green, and white in flags. I love reading that stuff.
Well, we've got the equivalent of a winter tropical storm hitting the Sandbar Peninsula this weekend. Wind and flood watches are up. They're trying to keep the idiots out of the ocean, but good luck with that (snort!). Cool front (hard freezes are extinct now) coming which is the storm trigger. My sister loved San Diego when she lived in LA years ago. I can see why. So, hope everyone is enjoying/relaxing during this Holiday Season. You all stay safe!

Hi, orlbucfan
The last shot is a porch railing on one of the old Victorian homes in Old Town. I tried converting it to B&W to see if it might look more interesting. It didn't. Oh well. Stay warm and dry during the storm.

Hi obf
I totally agree about the last photo looking like modern art.
I face timed with my brother in Florida yesterday, and he mentioned the first heavy rains falling. The 'sandbar peninsula' couldn't be a better description of the state. I hope you all stay safe on the land.
So, you have crazy boaters as well ; ).

Hi obf
I’m not a native Kiwi. I’m Brooklyn born, raised in the suburbs of NYC and CT, but living in NZ for 27 years. How about you, are you an exotic native Floridian?
My parents left CT for the sandbar as soon as they retired. Same with my brother and his wife, who live in Boynton Beach.
