Rainbirds

open thread_86.jpg
Don't have a lot to talk about as we are getting ready to go south (as rainbirds do) and catch some warmer weather for a few weeks.
Going to a Christmas dinner and toy drive at my union hall and meet up with some old co-workers. Then a week later will be back at the hall to be awarded my 50 year pin as a member. And then off to Cardiff-by-the-Sea for a little frolicking.
Will be meeting up with my brother from Tennessee who is in Cali to visit his sons.
Then start meandering back.
Should be back home by Christmas for a dinner that we put on every year.
Gonna be busy.
Hopefully the world doesn't burn before then.
Thread is open. Watcha got?

go south after the new year when it's colder here in Washington state. But it's cold here already, down below freezing every night.
Plus gas prices are a buck less than just last month.
Couple that with all that's happening at the union hall and my brother's visit, it's a no brainer.
And then there seems to be a lull in world events. Maybe we can get a little vacation in before WW2.
LOL.

Hope your trip is enjoyable. Still wrestling with mountains of leaves here.
Have one of those lawn sweeps to pull behind the tractor which is a big
help. Less raking involved. A slight chance of snow flurries today!
On this coast they are called snowbirds.
Thanks for the OT.

@QMS
buying one of those, a John Deere with a 25 cu. ft. hopper. But I got a shiton of leaves. I need a 50 cu. ft. hopper bare minimum.
We have a tilting trailer (4 x 8) that we rake the leaves into and it pulls behind the little Kubota.
I have numerous Big Leaf Maples. Some of the leaves are a foot across.
Make good compost material though.
Thanks for the post.

@earthling1

our sweep is a bit undersized (have to empty it too often) but with the rocks and trees, it
does squeeze between them. Had to add a cross platform with big rocks tied on to
get better traction for the brushes. That helped. Now just building piles around
the bases of the trees. Will hook-up the trailer next and transfer them out to the mega
pile back in the woods. Slower going at this ripening age.

@QMS
It's the bending over that gets to me, and earthling2. She rakes them into piles and I come along and pitchfork 'em into the trailer. Works pretty good.

for a wee break and then return for xmas, but not going nearly as far south as you are. We're just going to hop down to Pismo for a few days, hit some of the Paso area wineries and maybe some of the southeast SLO ones, hit the butterfly preserve and see how I do at beach walking after my stroke. We usually stay at a cliff top hotel about a mile north of the pier and the Splash Cafe, take stairs down to the beach and hoof it down to Splash on the sand. Should be a good workout, weather permitting.

I've always heard northern weather refugees called "snowbirds", but given your locale, "rainbirds" is quite appropriate and amusing. Capisce, as they say in Italia.

be well and have a good one

to some long walks on the beach on my new knees. Have been working out on the stationary bike for over a year now.
Taking the bikes with us and planning on doing some serious riding through towns and trails as we go.
Have a good trip.

Anywhere is fine as long as it is not hot. Hotbirds? hmmmm...
e1, I just back from a trip and am trying to adjust to getting up early. It took only 9 days of morning lollygagging to develop into a habit.
Violence is everywhere I look locally. We have had a Year of Murders. The court dockets are loaded with murder cases in the counties where I work. Wow.
People are under too much stress. Those of us that can get away should get away.
Have safe journey, e1!
