Open Thread - Thurs 12 Oct 2023: Dance and Sing in Russian!

Dance and Sing in Russian!

I was gonna write a bit about the economy. But, there were some minor panics in the family arena: nothing major (parents' tax return from the accountant was late, one of their car's wouldn't run (until my husband touched it, then it ran!)); all hands on deck were needed for a few days. And then the new war (Hamas/Israel) started and I'm... yea. I just want to get my comfy-est blanket wrapped around me, put it over my head and mumble once in a while. Maybe I'll eat a gallon of ice cream too. Or this great apple tart Hubby made me. I'll peek out when something good happens, like, Halloween or something.

I think I'm getting too old, or I just don't watch enough current thought-manipulation, err, main stream media. All I could think when the Hamas/Israel thing started was, 'Ahh, now 'they' have another war! And we can all forget about the Ukraine thing which wasn't going so well! Just in time. Imagine that!' And, 'How did this Hamas stuff happen without the intel in the USA, Nato, Israel, not knowing?' I mean, apparently Egypt knew, and tried to tell them. So, were those poor people who died so awfully just sacrifices to gin up enthusiasm for a new war, which is really horrible, frankly? Am I too cynical?

We here in Washington state are supposed to put our flags at half mast in solidarity, or whatever, with Israel tomorrow. But what about solidarity with the Palestinians? They are people too. And ... I dunno, I just don't know. I know some places are showing some solidarity, in a way. Like a couple towns in Yorkshire, England, where the Israeli flags flying in solidarity on the town halls were taken down by 'someone's.

*Note: I am not 'for' either side. I am for peace. Hamas was wrong to attack, so was Russia in Ukraine. Both were basically forced to by 'our' side. Peace. Peace.

I'm gonna turn away from this for now and do something fun. Here's some music from when I was just born, and a bit after. It's from our 'enemy'; the Russian one. I just love the music and the dancing. This is from the youtube channel for Leonid Kharitonov. Since the music is old (from the 1960's on) I guess the powers that be aren't censoring it, even though it was Soviet! Leonid has passed on, sadly. He was 84. He had a great voice. Enjoy!

Dark-Eyed Cossack Girl: from 1969. I was 7!! (Cossacks can be Ukrainians now https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cossacks , who knew?)

The Song of the Volga Boat Men: from 1965! I didn't really know this song was Russian when I was a kid. Somehow I knew the tune, if not the words, and I hummed 'Yo, heave, ho' to myself a lot whenever I was doing strenuous chores. Especially stacking hay, or moving manure!

Some Dancing! I could never dance like that, even when I was 3, which was when the movie that this clip is from came out!

Oh yea, since I had to run last week due to the family stuff, I wasn't able to respond to the last comment on my post about the Sycamore Gap tree in England. Creosote wrote about the felling of a wonderful tree and how he fought that felling and lost. I'm sorry I wasn't able to respond in a timely manner and I'm really sorry the tree was felled! This comment really spoke to me, as my post did to Creosote. Felling a 100 year old tree, for nothing! DANG!

So, thanks for reading and here's the open thread - and remember, everything is interesting if you dive deep enough, so tell us about where you're diving!

he would be something about more than a 110 years old today.
He danced with the Russians and loved it. He was a Nazi, but I guess if you start dancing to that kind of music, even an old Nazi can have his fun and nobody cares anymore, Nazi this or Nazi that.

So, time to dance with that great Russian music.

Have all a good time and if there is something as a "Frauenwahl" (meaning that women could choose to dance with whom and to what kind of music) I would choose Russian music and Russian way of dancing.

Be nice to each other. We need some love.

She said it a few times, but I couldn't get it. So she wrote it out for me.

Support not ‘indefinite,’ White House tells Ukraine

When it comes to funding Kiev, the US says it is “at the end of the rope”

The US is running out of money for Ukraine unless Congress approves additional funding, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Wednesday.

“In the near term, we’ve got appropriations and authorities for both Ukraine and for Israel,” Kirby said during the daily press briefing. “But you don’t want to be trying to bake in long-term support when you’re at the end of the rope.”

“And in Ukraine, on the Ukraine funding, we’re coming near to the end of the rope,” he added. “Today we announced $200 million, and we’ll keep that aid going as long as we can, but it’s not going to be indefinite.”

Asked to define “near term,” Kirby said he could not point to a specific date, because that depends on how quickly Ukraine and Israel expend their equipment and ammunition “or what the need is and what our ability to do it is.”

Welp and there it is folks. Kirby is saying that Israel takes precedence over Ukraine because America would rather give its unending support to Zionists over Nazis.

On another note it’s apparently okay to hold rallies that support Nazis, but it’s not okay to hold rallies that supports Palestinians. And another nod to history, yesterday Israel made every Palestinian worker leave their job, but they wouldn’t allow them to return to their homes. And families…neither one maybe not being there.

I’m sure that y’all can imagine the outrage of the NATO hypocrites if Russia had announced to the world that they would turn off all gas, electricity and water to Kiev and then commenced to bomb the hell out of them like Israel is doing. Today Israel said that they would not allow humanitarian aid to go into Gaza. The world yawned.

Is Russia and Turkey are about to run a supply mission via the Mediterranean
Sea to Gaza. Although Israel claims rights to blockade Gaza by water, that may
change with the arrival of battleships and air support. We shall soon see
how suicidal the Israel idea is to starve a neighbor.
It would seem other county's have a different idea to the Zionistic solution.

The only entrance to Gaza not controlled by Israel is Rafah on the Egyptian border.

Is Russia and Turkey are about to run a supply mission via the Mediterranean
Sea to Gaza.

Has that been confirmed yet? And Israel has bombed the Rafah crossing even though Bibi told people to flee. It would have been nice to see countries doing what it could to make Israel respect universal laws and UN resolutions that they have been ignoring for decades. Dunno if that was possible, but even some verbal yapping might have helped.

Well again what do you know… I spoke too soon.

High time to implement UN decisions on Palestine – Lavrov

When the current Israel-Palestine hostilities end, progress should be made towards a two-state solution, the Russian foreign minister has said

The escalation of violence in the Middle East should provide an impetus for implementing a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, the top diplomat reiterated a call for a swift resolution of the crisis. After that, hopefully “everyone would take responsibility for implementing the decisions of the UN Security Council on the creation of a Palestinian state under the principles that the UN has approved.”

“All of us had the same opinion… that this confrontation must be stopped immediately, that parties should respect international humanitarian law, prevent any terrorist actions and indiscriminate use of force,” Lavrov said.

He stressed that civilians from both sides were suffering en masse and that the failure to create a viable Palestinian state was the root of continued tensions in the region.

@#6.1...in the Eastern Med. So an Israeli military confrontation with a Russia/Turkish humanitarian relief effort by sea runs the risk of a great power confrontation. Based upon an analogous situation in 1973, I think it would be best for the US to advise Israel that they better not violently confront the Russian-Turkish relief effort, because it presents unacceptable risks of escalation. The US might say, we cannot back up your security effort if you directly attack Russian vessels. I think there are some wild cards here posing a risk of an unwanted general war. If the US military supply chain is stretched thin, it might be time to play the humanitarian role and let the relief into Palestine.

I'm worried about "warning shots" over the bow, on Russian or Turkish vessels, whether freighters or warships experiencing attacks that are "unattributable," say by submarines, mines, or the like (underwater drones). There are risks to both sides from unattributable attacks.

There is another carrier that was reportedly still in port on the US east coast scheduled to go to the med in the next several days, a "regularly scheduled" deployment.

I knew of the USN carrier group heading that way, but with the new announcement by
RUS/TURK forces, the control of the situation changes.
Obviously, the US intention will be to blockade.
When confronted by a 'peer force', the mission falls on shaky grounds.
Quite sure RUS will bring along a few subs, just in case.

I love it when the official US policy comes from the government’s media mouthpieces instead of the government.

Israel may elbow Ukraine out for US weapons – CNN

A ground operation in Gaza would require the types of arms for which stockpiles are already low, the news network said

The US is scrambling to ensure it can supply munitions to Israel in case of a possible ground incursion into Gaza, CNN has reported, citing multiple US officials. US stockpiles are already significantly depleted due to the arming of Ukraine.

The Pentagon has provided public assurances that it can support both Israel and Ukraine without compromising its own security and global force projection. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reiterated that stance on Wednesday after announcing the latest $200 million aid package for Kiev.

So far Israel has requested and received from the US interceptor missiles for its Iron Dome system. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s greatest needs are 155mm artillery shells and other arms required for ground combat. But if and when Israel starts a ground incursion into Gaza, it may need supplies of those too, the outlet suggested.

According to CNN, the Pentagon is instructing defense producers to speed up existing Israeli orders to expedite shipments. It is also “working around the clock … to identify extra stores of munitions around the world and how to move them to Israel quickly.”

I’m guessing that the American neocons will again tell countries like Iran, Syria, Russia and China that they cannot support the Palestinians in any way and especially weapons, but all the western countries can. Just like they said about helping Russia. And it’s too bad that Zelensky let lots of the weapons we sent him get sold on the black market and now he’s finding out how much he needs them. He’s afraid of getting left out. Yesterday he made an unannounced visit to NATO headquarters and asked Israel for permission to visit them. Gotta stay relevant.

Or maybe it comes down to who can pay for the weapons and who can only take out loans for them knowing that they can never repay them?

"Ukraine" is pretty much a patchwork created by the Soviets as "Ukraine Oblast" with bits added over time. The geographical territory it covers was variously "acquired" or included in Russia proper in bits and pieces going back to the early days when the Rus were cobbling together an assortment of Khanates, Khaganates and Hetmanates. Hetmanates were mini states or such ruled by Cossack Chiefs (hetmen) and largely populated by Cossacks. Many of the hetmanates, per my mizrable memory of my initial superficial understanding were in the area of what eventually was included in the eastern part of the Ukraine Oblast, generally east of the Dnieper River. In the sense that it can make some geopolitical sense to call that area Ukraine, the Cossacks have always been there, or at least soon after the Rus wandered out of Novgorod to Kiev and started spreading out in various directions.

Dozens of Israeli settlers have forced their way into the flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque complex in occupied East Jerusalem to mark the fifth day of Sukkot, according to the Islamic Waqf Department.

Since Sunday, thousands of settlers have been carrying out provocative tours of the mosque complex following calls by ultranationalist Jewish groups.

According to Jewish law, entering any part of the Al Aqsa Mosque compound, also known as the Temple Mount, is forbidden for Jews due to the sacred nature of the site.

Sukkot is a weeklong holiday, which started on September 29 and will continue until Friday.

Israeli settlers stormed the complex on Wednesday in groups through the al-Mughrabi Gate by the Western Wall near Al-Aqsa Mosque and attempted to perform “Talmudic rituals”, according to a Waqf official.

Police imposed age restrictions and prevented young Palestinians from entering the mosque during the incursions, witnesses told the Anadolu news agency.

The Israeli army forced Palestinians to shut down their stores in the Old City to allow Jewish prayers to take place. The Palestinian Wafa news agency reported that Israeli forces prevented a number of Waqf employees from entering the holy Islamic site in the morning.

This is the equivalent of Muslims entering St. Peter’s Square and doing the same to Christians. A definitely provocative act . Who authorized it?

ETA: The gist of this video is that he’s saying that Israel is going to destroy the mosque soon. One religious group of Israel has already brought 3 red cows for sacrifice. He says at the beginning that there are 3 groups in parliament that are fighting for how Israel’s future goes. Worth a listen.

Washington just dumped Ukraine into the waste-bin of US victim nations: “As long at it takes” is now “as long as we can” and “we are coming to the end of the rope in financing Ukraine.”

Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians died for empty US promises of “unwavering support”.

Ukraine has been wrecked and won’t recover for decades to come. Zelenskyy is finished and Russia has won. The United States, its western partners and NATO - defeated.

Why would any nation trust security guarantees by the US Govt ever again? The people of Taiwan must watch very carefully who they are counting on for their security.

What does this tell us? It’s an admission of US bankruptcy. The US Govt can no longer afford a prolonged war in Ukraine or anywhere in the world. Lies and deception (propaganda) are not enough to stay afloat. Corrupt ‘journalists’ don’t win wars or pay trillions in deficits and liabilities.

The Iranian intervention in Israel via Hamas accelerated the inevitable outcome for Ukraine. A threat of war in the Middle East with all of its dire consequences for the oil price and the fragile US economy was all it took.

The world is witnessing the rapid end of US dominance and the rise of the multipolar order. But never underestimate the arrogance of the US Govt. They may end civilization in a nuclear war rather than accept responsibility for destroying the United States from within - with blatant corruption.

First they went through Russia Russia Russia and then Covid Covid and then over night it was Ukraine Ukraine and now Israel Israel. Sheesh they have been put through the ringer haven’t they?

Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians died for empty US promises of “unwavering support”.

Wasn’t anyone expecting this after Biden’s great withdrawal from Afghanistan and his not telling his allies that he was doing it?

I’m betting that lots of countries knew why America wasn’t sending their most lethal weapons to Ukraine. They didn’t want the world to see how well they worked against Russia…or didn’t work and got blown up like the European weapons did.

The world is witnessing the rapid end of US dominance and the rise of the multipolar order.

Yup. Putin has been saying that this would happen. Too bad Biden is destroying the country from within too. Lots of states are going to go bankrupt because of how many immigrants they are having to take care of. of Israel not having to abide by international law. There just needs to be enough countries that have a spine to hold Israel accountable for its crimes against humanity!

Israel's Minister of Defense Yaov Gallant, told troops massing for a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip "We have abolished all the rules of war. Our soldiers will not be held responsible for anything. There will be no military courts.” Even Adolph Hitler didn't go that far . . . .

Minister Gallant also told troops "I have released all the restraints, we have [regained] control of the area, and we are moving to a full offense. Hamas wanted a change in Gaza, it will change 180 degrees from what it thought. They will regret this moment, Gaza will never return to what it was."

For anyone wondering whether or not Israel is planning an actual ground invasion of the Gaza Strip, Minister Gallant also answered that, telling Israeli troops "We started the offensive from the air. Later, we will also come from the ground."

Confirming Gallant's point, Israel Minister of National Security says "Invasion of Gaza is now Imminent" He said Israel has now no other option rather then to start the Ground action.

After those several direct warnings were delivered, Hezbollah publicly said today that not only will they enter the war, “Our naval fleet with cruise missiles and torpedoes is ready for war with Israel” The Hezbollah "red line" is the entry of the Israeli army into Gaza for ground operation. They even put out a video showing the weaponry they will use:

To drive home their point, Hezbollah then turned around and destroyed two Israeli army armored personnel carriers with Russian Kornet missiles on the Lebanese-Israeli border. So Hezbollah seems to have made clear, They're in on this fight no matter what the US or Israel say.

In nearby Iran, the message is similar. The Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) publicly stated this morning "IRGC is ready to go to war with Israel as part of any joint operation with Hezbollah" which was reported today by Russia's Izvestia newspaper.

Shockingly and hugely troubling on many levels, were remarks made today by Turkish President Recypt Erdogan. He told reporters "The world cannot tolerate the continuation of the humanitarian tragedy in the region." he went on to say "Israel must not forget that if it acts like an organization (Gang) and not like a state, it will ultimately be treated like an organization (Gang)."

Shockingly this morning, Turkey’s deputy minister of education posted on Social media telling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: “You will die.

Elsewhere, other countries and entities continue to chime-in on the conflict. Today, the Pakistani Army Chief threatened Israel: "If Israel launches a ground attack on Gaza, Pakistan will provide ballistic missiles to the Palestinians."

For its part, Israel seems to be showing it doesn't care at all what anyone else is saying. This morning, Israel apparently used White Phosphorus munitions against civilian targets in Gaza.

See article for the pictures of Israel using white phosphorus.

Biden said that he saw the make believe photos of the decapulated babies which the WH has again had to walk back. Will Biden or any leader call out this crime?
