You Can't Make It Up!

Open Thread Image.jpg

So last week the entire Canadian Parliament rose to their feet with raucous applause for a Nazi SS Veteran. It is indicative of the way in which Russiagate has morphed into Russiahate. The MP's heard "Ukrainian soldier Killed Russians" and jumped to their feet clapping like seals, but somehow they were deaf to the phrase, during WWII when of course Russia was our ally. Then to add fuel to the fire, we had Turdeau first throw the speaker under the bus, before declaring the incident was promoted by Russian propaganda. You really can't make it up. In the scheme of things it was a trivial event, but speaks volumes of the bias and ignorance in the west.

This week marked the one year anniversary of the destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines. Jimmy testified about it in the UN security council. (11.5 min)

Watch Jimmy Dore’s full comments to the United Nations Security Council on September 26, 2023

Sy Hersh new article...
A YEAR OF LYING ABOUT NORD STREAM

The Biden administration has acknowledged neither its responsibility for the pipeline bombing nor the purpose of the sabotage
It is important to understand that no Russian gas was flowing to Germany through the Nord Stream pipelines when Joe Biden ordered them blown up last September 26. Nord Stream 1 had been supplying vast amounts of low-cost natural gas to Germany since 2011 and helped bolster Germany’s status as a manufacturing and industrial colossus. But it was shut down by Putin by the end of August 2022, as the Ukraine war was, at best, in a stalemate. Nord Stream 2 was completed in September 2021 but was blocked from delivering gas by the German government headed by Chancellor Olaf Scholz two days prior to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
...
The Biden administration blew up the pipelines but the action had little to do with winning or stopping the war in Ukraine. It resulted from fears in the White House that Germany would waver and turn on the flow of Russia gas—and that Germany and then NATO, for economic reasons, would fall under the sway of Russia and its extensive and inexpensive natural resources. And thus followed the ultimate fear: that America would lose its long-standing primacy in Western Europe.

Not to mention the massive methane release perhaps the largest single release ever.

Nord Stream pipeline leaks are ‘catastrophic for the climate’
Methane leakage is likely to be the biggest burst of the powerful greenhouse gas on record in one of the most polluted bodies of water.
“Whoever ordered this should be prosecuted for war crimes and go to jail,” said Rob Jackson, a Stanford University climate scientist.
The worst-case scenario is estimated to be 778 million cubic metres of gas leaked, according to the Danish government.

What JFK tried to do before his assassination w/Jeffrey Sachs (50 min)
We will never know the world that could have been had President John F. Kennedy's assassination never taken place, but an inkling of how things could have been different can be found in the final months of his life. In his new book, To Move the World: JFK's Quest for Peace, Jeffrey Sachs unearths JFK's final political campaign—to establish a secure and lasting peace with the Soviet Union. How far did JFK's efforts go? What sort of progress was made on ending the Cold War, not through the collapse of the Soviet Union, but rather through mutual cooperation and understanding? To answer these questions and more, Jeffrey Sachs joins The Chris Hedges Report.

Somehow the congress critters managed to avoid a government shutdown.
Shutdown averted?

The threat of a federal government shutdown was suddenly easing Saturday after the House quickly approved a 45-day funding bill to keep agencies open, once Speaker Kevin McCarthy dropped demands for steep spending cuts and relied on Democratic votes for passage.

The rushed package would leave behind aid to Ukraine, a White House priority opposed by a growing number of GOP lawmakers, but increase federal disaster assistance by $16 billion, meeting President Joe Biden’s full request.

Don't the pols lose their pay during a shutdown, or is it just the working federal employees?
We'll see what happens after the 45 day short term funding bill.

Update (2155ET): Following the Senate’s passage of the Continuing Resolution, Rep. Matt Gaetz took to Twitter, where he was enraged over a side deal made between Speaker Kevin McCarthy and the Democrats for Ukraine funding, which Gaetz says he “didn’t tell House Republicans” about until after the vote. Gaetz was responding to Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman, who related a message from House Democratic leadership. “When the House returns, we expect Speaker McCarthy to advance a bill to the House Floor for an up-or-down vote that supports Ukraine, consistent with his commitment to making sure that Vladimir Putin, Russia and authoritarianism are defeated. We must stand with the Ukrainian people until victory is won.”

@Lookout Raining four days in a row, the last couple of days almost continuously until a couple of hours ago. Now the sun is out for a change. We've had about four inches of rain in the last three days (total, my amateur measurement with a bucket). There are pools of water everywhere. Finally, the mayor had public works clear out the drainage system in this low lying community. So the area continued to drain even at high tide.

We've been very lucky so far with hurricane season. I can't believe the flooding in NYC. Never saw anything like it.

I posted one of the South Korean Armed Forces day videos here the other day. Today, I saw that Christine Ahn, a leader of the Korean peace movement here in the US, found a tweet with an even better short video piece of the marshaling area for the parade, which made the point even more effectively.-

What's with the big video screens?

Thanks LO.

@Lookout isn't exactly bringing its power to bear to prevent DJT from being nominated as the DNC is doing to Kennedy. By the looks of it therefore, they would seem to be just fine with another DJT nomination and presidency. No organized effort by Rs to prevent this. Just the anti-T centrist Rs who were against him last time, plus a few DJT former backers who've backed off this time over the indictments. Very few so far. Perhaps that number will increase as things heat up next year, and esp after a few criminal convictions.

The Swamp: Who brought in (or back) Bolton, Pompeo et al, and also elevated Fauci? Those choices are totally on the Donald. An odd way to drain the swamp. A bunch of neocon cave dwellers, excepting possibly occasionally CJCS Milley. T got steamrolled by the Deep State, but for most of that he has only himself to blame. No excuses. All I want to hear from him on this issue is, It was MY fault, I apologize and pledge to do much better next time. But apologies are not in his makeup.

He alsoreally blew it on Covid with the Warp Speed effort, which he continues to boast about, while at the same time distancing himself from the inevitable mandates. The shutdown occurred on his watch too, while he predictably tries to foist that decision off on the states, forgetting to tell his listeners that he sent out Dr Birx to the states to "encourage" them to do just that.

Typical behavior by tough-talking Tough Guys: they can talk the talk, the easy part, but usually fail to walk the walk.

Btw, thx for the link to the Hedges-Sachs interview. Sachs' book is actually from a decade ago. It was refreshing, a bit surprising, to see the normally rather anti-Kennedy Chris Hedges this time show some fairness or evenhandedness in the chat w Sachs.

@Cassiodorus @Cassiodorus support for Biden consists of anti-Trump D/D-leaning voters. Given some time, once he's out of the grips of DNC primary rigging, RFK Jr should grow his base of D support to where it exceeds the number he pulls away from the R/Trump. And he would get a solid majority of D-leaning indies. Edit: Note, more voters identify as Indies than with either of the 2 major parties.

This scenario alone should give pause to the DP as they consider whether it's a good idea to put forth an aging incumbent with dismal polling numbers for over a year.

The thought does occur that maybe Jr will do to the D incumbent what his father did 55 yrs ago -- force the incumbent to step aside.

The number of idiots in power in NATO countries is growing.

One newly minted moron, the British Secretary of State for Defence, decided to move the UK military training of Ukrainian soldiers into Ukraine. That is, to turn the British military instructors into our Armed Forces’ legal targets; while being fully aware that they will be ruthlessly eliminated, and this time not as mercenaries but as British NATO specialists.

Another fool from Bundestag, the chairwoman of German Defence Committee with an unpronounceable surname, is clamouring to immediately provide the ukrobanderovtsy with Taurus missiles to enable the Kiev regime to hit deep into Russia’s territory to weaken the supply of our army. That is, it is in accordance with international law. Well, in that case the strikes against the German plants which produce these missiles, will also fully correspond to international law.

Really, these halfwits are actively pushing us to WWIII…

It's always Russia is evil and they're occupying Ukrainian territory so let's give them cluster munitions and anyone who says otherwise is a Putin puppet and must be immediately censored, so on.

If Russia were as evil as the liberal neocons thought it is, then the current operation wouldn't have all of the earmarks of a con job, complete with the rewriting of World War II history, and the liberal neocons wouldn't have voted against auditing the funding.

with the apparently obligatory Big Lie that Russia "invaded and occupied" Crimea in 2014. Such comments blackwash over the existence of multi-generational Russian settler families, to say nothing of the naval base at Sevastopol that Catherine the Great bought from the Turks in the late 18th century, that has housed the Russian (and then Soviet, and now Russian again) Black Sea fleet ever since.

The Big Lie also erases, or at best minimizes with the assumption that there was "coercion", the awkward fact that Crimean citizens voted on a referendum to rejoin the Russian mainland, and that the results were overwhelmingly in favor of doing so (see: multi-generational Russian settler families, Russian Black Sea naval base).

Because I'm still in love with you

When we were strangers
I watched you from afar
When we were lovers
I loved you with all my heart
But now it's getting late
And the moon is climbing high
I want to celebrate
See it shining in your eye

Because I'm still in love with you

Why Is it Called the Harvest Moon?

For several evenings, the moonrise comes soon after sunset. This results in an abundance of bright moonlight early in the evening, which was a traditional aid to farmers and crews harvesting their summer-grown crops. Hence, it’s called the “Harvest” Moon!

There are just a little over 12 complete Moon cycles every year, on average (there being about 29.53 days in a synodic month). The Harvest Moon isn’t like the other Moons.

Usually, throughout the year, the Moon rises an average of about 50 minutes later each day. But for the few nights around the Harvest Moon, the Moon seems to rise at nearly the same time: just 25 to 30 minutes later across the northern USA, and only 10 to 20 minutes later farther north in Canada and Europe.

Additionally, the Harvest Moon rises at sunset and then will rise very near sunset for several nights in a row because the difference is at a yearly minimum. It may almost seem as if there are full Moons multiple nights in a row!

I liked the last stage the best:
Acceptance: We are going to survive even if things will never be like they used to be. We can no longer consume more than we produce. We have hard work and hard times ahead of us. We can join with our family and neighbors in creating a better society with less materialism and more personal interaction. Time to join a church, get some chickens, plant a garden and learn to repair small engines.

I'm using more and more battery powered tools these days instead of gas powered small motors.

Great to see you this morning. Hope all is well with you across the pond!

read every column you write and watch or listen to many of the podcasts. Such great and comprehensive subject matter. Can't thank you enough.

Mon mari comes from western Illinois. Those place names are good for a laugh especially for those of us raised north of Mexico or in the Latin Mass. So Rye-ooh is Rio; San Joe's is San Jose; Kay-row is Cairo. There are many more. His mom really knew her local names and knew her Latin as well.

Been wanting to share one of my favorite candidates for the national anthem since. your 4th of July post: America the Beautiful

I cleaned 21 windows yesterday listening to Alex and The Duran plus other links from here about what is going on.

Weather is 30 C today and except for our six inches in September we got in a little over a week have had very warm weather for two months. Lots of rain falls in very short time frames and runs out in the creeks which feed the Loire and eventually the Atlantic. We are the same latitude as Astoria, Oregon or Mt. Saint Helens.

ETA: just got the mail and lookee here...our insurance is encouraging two Covid 19 shots and a flu shot. This is for our protection. Are you freakin' kidding me? Signed by Dominique Martin MD who ever. This is beyond bizarre given all the contrary evidence freely available in the world. These people are nuts. We wonder how many are taking them up on their shots. Out here in the country it doesn't seem like many. I can't help being upset by this.

A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit. Allegedly Greek, but more possibly fairly modern quote.
